Thanks for the reply, I found the gateway, its set at the router IP address, but I can access the DVR over my LAN via Wifi on IDMSS I cant acces it on internet explorer though, page cant be loaded. -
I can attest to one incident that worked out well. 10 of our neighbors were broken into over a 5 week period. The last one, someone was home. The thief didn't get inside, but walked off when hearing the homeowner, who followed him while calling the police. The thief waited around a corner for him and tried to hit him with a board. My neighbor was able to fight back and eventually pinned him down after slugging him in the face a few times. Because it was self defense, he had nothing to worry about. The burglar now has a couple of assault charges and has been pinned to the other 10 home invasions. No home invasions since. That neighbor got a few pats on the back.

I am having someone test an android phone for me but they are not getting through. My ip address is setup through a dlinkddns site and until just a moment ago I had not activated the DDNS function on the DVR. (it is now though pss 4.05 via NETWORK, DDNS) Prior to this, I am able to access it from a remote computer. HTTP is set via router and DVR to 1004 for the internal IP of the DVR. Using that port is also required to access the DVR locally on my "intranet" settings: TCP port 37777 UDP port 37778 Http port 1004 I am providing my ip address for testing as: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:1004 or optionally xxxx.dlinkddns.com:1004 Is there something I should be doing differently on an android device compared to a PC with IE? This works fine on a remote computer, so it should also work on an android phone right? ...from the phone tech support guy. (that error was : "Connect to server fail.") Should I also activate UPNP? Should I also use the "ADDITIONAL FUNCTION" - "Auto Register, which was already enabled but has an IP 0.0.0.0 , port 8000, Device ID 0 ? Thanks

help setting up remote Dmss android

finally, yes it works on the Optimus S! -
I guess the best question is what is the lowest height I should put them and still prevent (or reduce) vandalism? Two will be inside a fenced area, but three (and maybe a couple more later) will be in the alley, over a sidewalk and on a vacant lot that are not fenced. I know that if they are lower, I can see more face, but I am not expecting my system to actually get faces. Thieves wear face masks anyway. I really want to be able to look at the house when I am away if the alarm goes off and just have the deterrence value of the big camera housings. The walls I am installing on are nearly 20 feet tall on the front, and about 16 on the back, but I cant figure out how high to put the cameras. No eaves or overhangs. I am also hanging lights to aid my non IR cameras. Any advice on that would also be appreciated.

help setting up remote Dmss android
trythis replied to trythis's topic in General Digital Discussion
The tutorials all mention gDmss, Sean's states that if you see any others that cost money not to use them. However, the market charges for gDmss. Dmss-Pro is the one offered by Dahua for free. Which should the tech testing the system use? How is it that the Android app does not access the HTTP port? Should I remove the http port address from the end of the url? -

What about using the DDMS pro that is free and provided by Dahua? Or does it not work with the QVIS? -

I dont have an android phone...., my phone is a "dumb" phone. I am having someone test the app on a phone before I buy it. I gave the exact instructions from the video. I just wanted to see if there was something specifically different because of the non port 80 URL. and because they arent getting through. The 37777 is from the TCP, the 1004 is for HTTP What confuses me is the Android app having a port box and I am not sure if it should be 37777 or http port 1004 (instead of 80 which is normal) I know the video shows the default of 37777 which I still have it at for TCP. The app doesnt clarify what the "port" refers to. Would someone with an android phone be willing to try this though a PM so I don't have to post my details online? Thanks -
It's a 2010 phone. What I dont get is that the list has no LG phones at all. The primary reason I want this phone is for the ability to view my cameras when I am out of town. I really need to find out if it will work before I buy it. Hopefully someone has one and has tried it out.

Hello again, Just thinking about finally getting a smart phone, but something cheap, maybe from Ting wireless. They offer the Optimus S, not a fancy high end phone, and not listed on Bahama Securities page of compatible phones either (nothing LG listed at all). It is Android 2.2 Will it work? Dmss: so many options, (gdmss vs dmss, client, pro...which?) one out in the market is $29.99, another is 4.99 Does the 2.2+ mean that the phone will work or will the processor power also be an issue? The phone can't run flash, which I am sure dmss isnt using that. Any ideas? Thanks!

What kind of HDD we need to choose?
trythis replied to marufai's topic in General Digital Discussion
I took a chance and bought a 2TB external drive made by Hitachi. It was the cheapest 7200 RPM drive I could find, but I had to rip it out of the case to get to it. it turned out to be one of the more expensive drives they sell as internal and was $120 cheaper than buying it without the enclosure. It seems to be working great. -
I bought some of the Samsung SCC 130A cameras from Nelly's Surplus. I also purchased the Apollo DVR. The cameras are obviously not the fanciest, but I think the images look better than the night owl stuff display equipment at MicroCenter. They dont need extra lights at night with a .1 LUX rating. Anyway, thats not my question. The cameras resolution is 330 TVL. The DVR can record at D1 7 fps on each channel or CIF at up to 30 on each channel. With the camera limited to roughly CIF, output, am I better off running the system at CIF/30fps at D1/7fps? CIF fps could be any number....any suggestions welcome. I have 2 TB drive and I am recording on motion detection. With three cameras currently hooked up it looks like I am using .01 Terabyte per every three days, so space doesn't seem to be an issue.

CIF or D1 on older analog camera with new DVR
trythis replied to trythis's topic in General Digital Discussion
Thanks, that's the way I set it up, but it does seem strange that the small resolution increase is improvement over 30 FPS. The equipment is great though, Sean. It's great way to get started with this stuff. -
Thanks, I am considering the new firmware as well, have you had any problems with the Dahua update on the Apollo? I have HDMI, so it should work, but I thought I would make sure first.
-
Hello, I know the Apollo has remote capabilities over the internet, but can I access this over my network without getting on the internet? Reason for this: Our TV is a plasma, so we cant view the DVR menus for very long without causing screen burn in. We arent buying another TV just for this. We have cable that restricts how much data we can use over the internet per month, so I would rather just stream it within our own intranet. Accessing the DVR locally on our laptops would solve both problems. Thanks, and sorry if this question has been answered before, I just could not find an answer to it.

What is the theory behind Category 5 cabling?

Learning a lot here, thanks. I now feel kinds dumb for buying siamese coax. -
what about a second camera? One zoomed one wide, then you have both!

SATA just refers to Serial ATA. That is a very standard drive and is what is most likely in any computer you have unless it is more than 5 years old or so (guessing there) Previously it would have been PATA or Parallel ATA. I am not sure about the required quality of drive. I see very high prices for disc drives sold by CCTV dvr sellers' sites. I dont know if it is profit, an expense to cover insurance for installing the drives, or if they are getting some very special drives. Often they are priced in the range of 10K RPM SCSI drives used in servers but you can buy 1TB Enterprise class drives for $130 or so. Desktop class would be a little bit cheaper and I dont know specifically what the difference is. I have read that with cheap drives, if they lose a sector the DVR just stops working because it doesn't know how to handle relocating the data or something like that. I dunno, maybe someone can speak to this issue with experience. The worst thing about hard drives right now is the flooding in Thailand causing drive prices to go up 100% over just 6 months ago.

I am looking at some used cameras vs the new ones with IR. I am mostly looking to use them to check on the house when I am out of town. I do not expect to catch anyone because the thieves here tend to wear ski masks. Right now, I am looking at Samsung SCC-130A/B Security Camera W/ 7-70mm Auto Iris Lens. + housings mounting brackets or Ultrak KC552BCN Color Security Camera W/ 7-70 mm Lens & Housing +mounting brackets The price difference from these cameras + other things is pretty similar and I would like some advice. I am planning to use the Qvis Apollo 8 channel DVR What makes the most sense for cameras mounted 12 to 15 feet off the ground. I will be looking for images from 5 to 50 feet away from mounting point. The big housings look intimidating, but have lower resolutions, the little cameras lack the big lens optics and are not very noticeable . It never gets very dark here, the street lights keep it very well lit, but I plan to add motion sensor lighting anyway. Thanks

I am set on the Apollo, not buying a Pro HD, too much money. My budget does not allow for buying cameras over $70. No sense offering suggestions in the $150 range, not gonna happen. I am trying to do all of this for $700 including cable, power supply, mounts, housings, + cameras. I can always upgrade a camera or two over time, but I wanted to get a decent DVR to start. I have looked into lens comparisons and think the 3-8mm are what I really need, but I can't see the aperture on all the lenses. I am thinking about spending less on the cameras and getting the smaller optics for now.
