This is very common in what I've seen. Patched together, inadequate power supplies, Know wonder they want someone to come in and fix a "system" that that has a short shelf life in the first place. I have little sympathy for owners of patchwork systems. The time involved is just not worth it. I'd start over and do it right.

PT270P Pan/Tilt - Do i need a physical controller unit?
galen replied to atropine's topic in Security Cameras
Yes, the use of a controller is necessary but be careful. Not just any dvr or controller will work on some ptz's. With most Ptz's, in order to program the presets thats easy. But when presetting auto touring, some ptz's require three digit input. Some of the cheaper controllers are only two digit. And most dvr's can't do this. Having said that, If the maker of the ptz camera makes the dvr, it may be able to program the proprietary ptz. -

My client has a stand alone automatic car wash, that is on the same lot as a C-store but its his wash and not his C-store. He has noticed that someone is tampering with his equipment that is in the wash bay. He thinks its his competition but can't prove it. His competition has the gas pump maintenance but he thinks they are sabotaging his wash so they can get the wash also. There is no broadband onsite. He doesn't want the C-store manager to know in case he is in on it. He was wanting a wireless cell card. I ask where saw that. He said it was on the monorail in Vegas. I think a stainless steel lock box that is waterproof with a DVR inside with a 500 gig hd would be more practical. Any suggestions?

Well what I have done is buy from different sources in the US. Why? Plain and simple, shipping. Most suppliers carry like and kind coax. But shipping 500 or a 1000 ft. roll gets expensive. So if your shipping it all over then its good to have different suppliers. But if you are using it for installs locally then you need a supplier close to you. What part of the country are you from?

You have your work cut out for you on this one. Will this be high maintaining?

Yes, but make sure your compairing apples to apples. Make sure your not compairing direct burial to riser or that one has 85% sheilding and the other is 95%. I know what your saying though, I ran across this about 4 months ago. Windy City has pretty good prices. And very good prices if you buy over a $1000. If your doing a lot of installs, it helps lower the overhead.

I agree with UMDranger. He's right. Also you may be able to save a few cameras by what I did. In the middle of the hall, place two cameras about 5 feet from each other looking at each other down the hall.

Help on Marketing !

I also joined the Chamber of Commerce. It will cost you a hundred bucks but you get introduced to all the other businesses, and you get put in the directory of businesses in town. Someone will introduce you and then you can give a little presentation. Bring along a bullet and a box, and a little piece of coax and tell them how important it is to use the good stuff. I also liked what scorpion does. Scorpion is a survivor. He does what ever it takes to get his name in front of people. Don't be shy scorpion, tell them all your good tricks. -
Able, it sounds like you have it. All the above. Around here, RG-6 is usually higher is cost. And why use it unless its called for. Longer distance.

I have to agree with securitymonster. The Nuvico bullets I have sold, didn't last.

Well this has come up for me recently. If you look on the fan, it will be 12 volts most likely. The heater could be either. The little board in the housing will convert your 24 volts to 12 volts for the fan. Just make sure you supply the camera with 24 volts if its 24. A lot of box cameras are dual voltage. And auto sensing. But then some cameras are specific on what voltage is supplied. Don't burn the camera up by just assuming.

I'm shooting from the hip but I would guess that its a connection issue in the camera. When it heats up or you move the camera a certain way, it loses connection. It could be a stretched wire that only has a few fibers of wire making connection. I'm assuming that the coax and power source checked out OK. Just before it blacks out you can see the center of the picture distort ever so slightly. Or in the sky, the picture will start to roll. Voltage, the lack of the correct voltage.

I like your ideas Kao. Of course i will put everything in conduit. And yes he wants it all covert. The pump, chemicals and piping are all in the wash bay. The doors to the bay are closed at night but open during the day. So anyone can just walk in the bay. But the culprits are opening the pump cabinet and jacking with the settings on the chemicals so the cars are not coming clean. Whoever is doing this, knows carwash equipment. My client thinks its his competition. I like the idea of the wireless ethernet adapter but I'll use a wireless router. It would be slick for him to drive up to the site and just access it. If he likes the setup, I think he wants to install at several locations.

Client needs an inexpensive system - pc based too expensive
galen replied to sbbamafan's topic in Digital Video Recorders
I really don't think there will be a cost savings by going to a stand alone. They are both priced about the same. The stand alone may even be higher. But when sticking to a low entry level DVR, I think you will have less trouble with a stand alone. I would recommend the ICRealtime Flex, which is not bare bones. But less in cost than say GE or Pelco. Nuvico, would be considered entery level.
