That is a very cool house.. And I could go crazy with my man cave in that huge garage! Someone obviously has some dealing with the house since every door has a sign posted. Jason

Desperate: "thief" cheating our wired CCTV constantly?
jtetterton replied to ThomasSmith's topic in General Digital Discussion
As mentioned, if you do use WIFI, make sure it's secured with WAP or WAP2 and not WEP. WEP has been proven easy to break. If there is any possibility someone could have the current password, it's a good idea to go ahead and change it. I just can't see someone being able to defeat your systems in this manner. Are you sure it's not your significant other doing this to justify spending more on high tech gadgets?? Sounds like something I would do. Also mentioned earlier, some type of alternative video or picture capture system? A wildlife game cam that snaps on motion? Something completely independent of your house system. If you are being bugged as you say, you could build some type of independent capture system that runs off a 12v car battery and build it into a chair ottoman or something? Bring the pieces in one at a time over a course of days so no one will realize what you're doing and don't speak of it while in the house (bugs). This all sounds very strange, good luck! Jason -

I actually lol'ed at that... a real LOL, not a fake internet LOL either. -
Just 4 to start, I plan on having more in the future, maybe one right at each back door, one in the garage, and one in the dog's room (they have their own room with a doggie door to go in and out, it's like a doggie studio apartment).

Good idea, dedicated power supply for the PTZ then.. Now that I think about it, Sean did mention that I should probably get one for it. I didn't think about the alarm inputs... I'll run an extra cat5 up there for that purpose. Jason

I bought a 66 block for my installation with the idea of terminating inbound video and power from my cat5s. Im now wondering if it's ok to run 24v through the 66 block? Is this an ok practice or should I avoid it?

Wow, I had no idea that much current went through the phone line..

I do understand the more breaks between the camera and the dvr/power can does mean more places for "trouble". I'm just looking for a easy way to do a clean install. Thanks for the advice! I'm also curious, does anyone know what voltage a standard phone line (POTS) runs at?

I did hear they went out of business. Just wondering if this dvr was also made by someone else. Like Apollo and dahua.

Good info! Thanks

What part of nova? I'm in Culpeper. Price seems a little high IMO. I'm looking at several CNB VCM-24VF cams for my upcoming install and they can be had for 165 and they are 600 TVL color. Is there something this camera has that I'm overlooking? I'd be interested if the price was lower and I could pickup depending on yor location. Jason

That's an excellent still shot. If I only had the money to afford cameras like that

Verizon refers to it internally as FTTP (Fiber to the Premise). When I bought my house, one of my requirements for purchasing was either Cable or Fios.. I do a lot of work from home and it is awesome to have. I've had it three years and I've only had one outage that lasted 12 hours.

DVR in one room, screen in another room

What the max transmission distance for these? I'm assuming there is also an Active version for greater distance? -
Camera seem to be priced OK, I have no experience with them. Balun's seems overpriced if they are passive. Cat5 seems way overpriced. I bought a 500' box at lowes for $61. Power supplies seem overpriced. 4ch DVR seems overpriced... mpeg4 compression from the specs. You can get an Apollo 4ch H.264 compression and D1 res (7fps) on all channels. I would source the equipment myself and have him install it if you're not comfortable doing so, you could save quite a bit.

Designing system for my home. ( Looking for help etc... )
jtetterton replied to Firefighter's topic in System Design
Maybe I missed it, but what camera did you purchase and where will it be located on your diagram? -
Hello all! Thanks for the great resource here. I'm planning my new system for my home and need advice on what type of cat5 cable to run. I'm installing 3 VCM-24F cameras, the longest cable run to be about 90 feet. I plan on using baluns and doing video over 1 pair and power over 2 pair. What type of cat5 is recommend for outdoor use? It won't be buried, simply tucked into the vinyl siding and brought into the house at a central point. Thanks! Jason

So a VCM-24F is a true day/night cam that includes the separate back box?

That's the response I was hoping for The plenum and direct burial prices are outrageous. Thanks, Jason
