I had a similar problem with the equivilent 4 channel card. I had run the software out of the box, and encode.exe was consuming 90+ % of cpu cycles. Minimizing the system (not displaying the software on the screen) would lower the value somewhat. What dropped the cpu was taking out the software and drivers (that were included with the card), and installing another newer version of the software that i obtained from the site. Seems like there was an encode.exe bug in the very early version of this software, and was fixed later on. I may be wrong, but i believe the version now at wave-p is not password protected for your card. There is also a warning about the installation order of the drivers / software, causing cpu overload. This is mentioned in the help file.

I think what was confusion is somewhat clearer. It's about how some ebay specials get off saying they "hardware encode" Lower priced cards had the rockwell bt878/879 (aka Conexant Fusion or Techwell ?? ) chip on it, and was marketed as "hardware encoding". From what i understand the analog signal is captured by this chip on the pci card and does some processing, adjusting size, contrast, etc, and then pixel by pixel by frame the video is written to memory. The CPU then handles the MPEG or h264 encoding High end cards have hardware encoding as well, but also includes MPEG or h.264 or mjpeg /etc encoding there on the card, and would put that stream into memory via the pci bus. I wonder that the CPU must decode the MPEG /etc stream for motion detection or content analysis, or if that's done by the encoding chips on the pci card? Now, some ultra low priced ebay specials would not have the BT878/879 chip, probably an Analog-2-Digital converter, writes this stream of signal values (not pixels) to memory, and relies on the CPU to interpret the values and create a pixel, then revisit it as it creates the encoded MPEg /etc stream. comments?

Is there a general knowledge method to identify a DVR board as having hardware encoding /compression on it (as opposed to software compression)? In addition to the conexant fusion 878a chip, there must be a MPEG or H.264 encoding chip dedicated to do this, perhaps one per channel or MUX. I'm in the amateur side of things, 4 to 8 channels, looking for solutions. Please expand my brain.

uvnc seems like a smart idea to install on client's computers, if they will allow it. You'd have to have certain ports (5800 or 5900) opened or port forwarded to the system. Do you pro's often rely on this (RDP or UVNC or PCAnywhere) for service issues?

Has there been any resolution to this problematic chinese manufacturer. I see the stuff all over ebay, still.

Hello! Question about wave-p... I have been running a cheap wave-p ether 9404 card for the last year, with 2 camera's on my car and front porch (personal security -problems with the ex-wife). Not being a professional in this arena, I found the wave-p 9404 board from ebay to be a deal and it has suited my needs well - motion detection, ir cameras, 24/7, fairly stable, initial install & software upgrade was tough, and ... it's running on an old w2k 800MhZ machine! A while back (a year?) I actually emailed wave-p and got a response about upgrading the DVR software, they provided the password and all was good. Now I see another update to the software - including a fix to a cpu utilization bug that i have, but cannot get my old password to unzip the files, or when i email wave p, any sort of response. I thought the policy with them was included software upgrades. Anyway, the question is, how do i get ahold of an updated dvr software for this card? Cheers, Kyle
