  1. I've got quite a bit o history with MS products, having an entire career built on them and what I've learned is that it's rarely the OS that isn't stable or fast, it's the applications and things user/admins do to the base OS that cause it issues. Memory leaks? Every one of those I've tracked down over the last few years was the result of 3rd party hardware, not MS OS software. I've also had a Tivo since 1999 and I'd agree that they have become less reliable but that really, I believe, has less to do with the Linux kernel than it does with the code that Tivo writes today. I could see a case that could be made for selecting the OS first but as you mention, I think it's almost a mute issue today - if you want to run a Mac on a PC - no problem, run Linux in a VM on your Mac or PC - no problem. Want to run all of them together - great, install free VMware (which I run my DigiFort NVR solution on). In "general" I think it really doesn't matter since what will really matter is - does the application do what I want it to do?
  2. That seems kind of backwards. What if the Linux software doesn't do what you do but the windows software does? I'd suggest that your specific security needs drive your choice of software and if you do get down to a windows vs linux, make that decision at that time, not at the start of the selection process.
  3. See my response in your duplicate thread: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=31417 The one I posted there is actually used at our community pool. We have a point-to-point wireless connection (ubituiti) where it dumps to a 15Mbs upload link that allows board members to see it, the assn manager to review footage (to ensure vendors are working the hours billed) and for the pool manager to keep an eye on the teenage lifeguards.
  4. Before I installed my IP cam system, I had a Q-See QT-526 and it was a fairly good DVR. We still have a 16 channel unit at our community pool and it's worked without issue. Full D1 at 30FPS on all channels, remote access, fairly good interface.
  5. I'm confused here - where is the steam coming from? Is is coming from some sort of relay off the hosted website or directly from your steam out of the camera? If so, how much upstream bandwidth do you have? How big exactly are you looking at - 30FPS at 2MP or something like 3FPS at 40x480? Maybe you could provide more details?
  6. Is this for analog, digital? Business, home? What would be your requirements for the system?

    Hello from Houston

I am David and I've had a analog system for a number of years and just recently switched over to 12 IP, 2MP cameras.
  8. I'm using DigiFort which supports them directly. Also, if anyone is in Houston, TX and needs some of these Dahua 3200's I have a bunch of extras (cash only) as I placed an order for 40 more than I needed for our project to get the cost down.

Got a Cisco router? You may want to replace it.

I've been a big user DD-WRT for years and it's good. If you want some really amazing firewall/VPN/etc software, I suggest checking out pfSense: http://www.pfsense.org/ You can run it on an old PC, in standalone hardware or even VM's. David
  10. Stupid driver running over large rock on corner of my shop driveway: http://www.screencast-o-matic.com/watch/cl1O3PH9W Guys dumping trash all the way down a street. I knew who these guys were so I picked it all up, plus some extra, drove it to their house and dumped it (without the bags) into the driveway: http://www.screencast-o-matic.com/watch/clew0YgS4 Not sure what this guy was doing but I suspect I scared him off: http://www.screencast-o-matic.com/watch/cX6OcUO5P My camera system, even with it's middle of the road quality (I'm about to deploy a completely new 2mp IP system), it has saved me thousands (I record order assembly for an online business and use it to dispute/confirm order errors). Of course I've got other items I've caught but didn't save - people stealing the copper from the cell phone tower next to the shop, people peeing in the street, vandals, people littering, crazy driving and more....
  11. Small world - I was the second person to order from him for the Christmas lights back in early 2010. I'm the guy with the RGB/Pixel video series if that rings a bell.
  12. We just purchased a large number of Dahua 2mp IP cams and eval'ed a bunch of NVR software. We narrowed it down to DigiFort for the two projects we are working on. It has native support for a variety of Dahua IP cams but none of their PTZ's at this time.
  13. Where possible...free VMware ESXi 5. Need a new machine - no problem, clone and you are done. Plus you can snapshot and roll back. Of course you can also do that in Windows (mostly) if you have System Restore turned on. I've just started looking but what amazes me is just how much NVR software is out there. What also amazes me is how much of it is just junk. Keep up the NVR reviews - you are making the internet a better place.
  14. Cheap comes with a price - Don't forget air shipping which is usually about $2-3 per pound. Plus T/T or other wire charges ($20-45) per order. Plus, you better pick your vendor well - if you don't you'll send a few thousand over there and get nothing in return. But of course...smokin' deal. On a side note - the bullet version of this camera (about $245) is junk (http://www.dahuasecurity.com/English/product_info.aspx?type=339&&css=0&&id=180). You'd think with pretty much the same guts it would be just as good but it isn't. If you can get enough light into those IPC-HDB3200C's they are just really impressive.
  15. I use Hiren's boot CD with the disk clone tools. Add in one of those $8 USB to everything adapters (IDE,SATA, etc) and you are set. http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd
  16. This is the Dahua IPC-HDB3200C (http://www.dahuasecurity.com/English/product_info.aspx?type=339&&css=0&&id=. I purchased a few of these Dahua's out of china for $108 USD + shipping (plus T/T costs) and I must say - they are smokin' nice. As long as you have a moderate amount of light they just look amazing.
