well, i guess there is a slight difference on the lan versus the net.... not in picture quality or lack of it, but it's latency i believe... on the lan, i can press the onscreen ptz arrow and it will move almost straight away, but on the net press the button, nowt happens for 2 seconds, then it recognises the button press, and finally the picture moves.

i've got the nte5 socket upstairs where the cable from the pole comes in, atm there's a 15 meter length of normal phone wire from the nte5's extension idc terminals running around the house to the living room, where there's a normal phone socket, then the dangely filter, phone and adls router plugged in there, i'll move the router upstairs next to the nte5 socket, fit the filtered faceplate (got a vdsl one as used on bt vision, supposedly the best there is) the top socket on the nte5 will be for the router then, and the 15 meters of phone wire will then come off the filtered idc connections on the vdsl plate, and the phone will plug in direct to the socket in the living room, oh, and i'd better remember to run the cat5e lan cable from the dvr to the routers new home haddnt i Never know, i might get that elusive 1 meg of broadband speed i'm down on my line, i'm on an 8 meg package (1.2 up) and get around 7 meg most of the time, but as i already get the 1.2 meg upload speed, i cant see too much change in the dvr's net viewing quality... tho if i'm getting errors and high latency due to the phone wire it might improve, just done a ping test... getting 1% packet loss... so theres a problem for a start, 48ms ping and 16ms jitter, bod this stuff is confusing

I've just ordered one of those faceplate filters, and will move the router next to the master socket when it arrives, Will see in a few days if it makes any difference, but to be honnest i think it is this swann POS outputting a deliberately reduced quality stream as suggested... not much i can do about that really.... well there is, and i'm looking into what to replace this dvr with, but so many to choose from, i'm back to where i was a month and a half ago, so many dvr's out there, most of them knock offs or genuine ones that are just plain crap, only reason i chose the swann box over the kview box at maplins was because i've heard of swann

lan cable is pre-made, but i had exactly the same problem before with a home bodged cable.... i had a couple of pre-mae cables that werent long enough, so snipped the plugs off one end, then soldered the wires together, heatshriunk them etc, i got exactly the same rubbish quality and lag with that cable... but i will try the laptop straight into the dvr, could be my router... but i know it's really the crappy swann dvr, i'll also try the account with only the ptz cams active, and set the ptz's to a lower baud rate, but i am looking at a better dvr, as i've used all 8 chanels and want more, so looking for a 16 chanel dvr, would like to get a dahua... but i can only really afford £200 max,

what is the dif between 2 axis... 3 axis... 4 axis PTZ Contr
gazz replied to anderson2624's topic in Security Cameras
i'm pretty sure they are refering to the joystick's axis, 2 axis being up down left and right, for pan and tilt, then they call the rotate function of the joystick the 3rd axis, for zoom controll, i have seen one controller stating 5 axis!!! but reading into it, they have the focus and iris functions controlled from the joystick too... via pressing buttons on the top and rotating the zoom axis, they big up the benefits of being able to do all importiant controls with one hand on the joystick.... presumably they are aiming their product at hidden changing room camera operators, so their other hand is left free to play the one stringed banjo -
i have read in a few places that pelco D has more features than pelco P, and also the data is sent differently as a result, but as you say, dosent really matter too much, the sunkwang ptz cams i have can work on pelco D and P, from 2400 to 9600, the dvr can do all that and so can the ptz controller i got today, so i'm sticking with pelco D 9600.

ptz joysticks... analouge or digital???
gazz replied to gazz's topic in Video Transmission/Control Devices
just got my second sunkwang ptz camera, and picked up a couple of "hi-speed ptz controller"s with broken joysticks... i.e. shafts snapped off, very basic old controllers, but they were cheap, after fannying about for ages and not getting any response on any setting of the controller dip switches, i had an idea... and swapped the setting switches back to front, i.e. where it said to be on, i put that switch off etc, and sure enough, the damn thing worked, got it on pelco-D 9600, proportional joystick works nicely, menu button dosent... but i remembered seeing on here about using preset code 95, and that works instead, I just need to run a twisted pair from the bird shed to the house now, i really want to see about making this wireless, but as i cant control the swann dvr via the ptz controller, i'm not sure it's worth it atm, as i still need the infrared remote to change camera on the dvr. -
I'm looking to buy a ptz joystick to control my 2 ptz domes, i'm wondering about the way the joysticks work, are they analouge joysticks that adjust the pan/tilt speed, i.e. push the stick a little to the left, the cam moves slowly to the left, push the stick all over to the left, the cam moves fast to the left? or are they digital, and you have to adjust the speed manually, i.e. no matter how far you push the stick, the dome moves at the speed you set?

ptz joysticks... analouge or digital???
gazz replied to gazz's topic in Video Transmission/Control Devices
ahhh, typical, wonder if my sunkwang SK-V106/Z240 domes can work with the variable speed protocol. -
Does such a beast exist?? i want to control my 2 ptz cameras using a joystick, running the pelco -D protocol at upto 9600 baud rate, but as i view the camera's on different TV's in the house, i dont want to be tethered by a cable for the data link, does a wireless ptx controller exist, using a radio link for the wireless bit.... i've seen those infra red remote jobbies, not what i want at all, i want the physical joystick and a few buttons on a little console, shove a few batteries in the base to power it, and a little antenna sticking out the back, then the reciever connected via the standard twisted pair to the cameras. I am in the UK, so would prefer to buy here if possible, if not, then i have seen you can get some rs485 radio link modules for about 50 quid, running on the 433mhz band that's licence free here, so i could add these to a normal wires joystick if needed, but would prefer a ready made guarenteed to work set up if possible.

yup, both support 9600 baud rate, i've chosen peloc -D, as i believe that's the newer one, tho exactly what the differences between pelco -D and -P is i dont know.

i have a Swann dvr8-1200 system (wanted better but needed to just get something installed quick) The cameras are all inside my avaries, the 4 ones that came with the kit (PRO-580 1/4" CCD cameras, 480tvl, 3.6mm lens) plus a 1/3" CCD, cam off ebay, 540tvl with a 4mm lens, and a china special £10 cheapie 420tvl cam, The 1/3" chip cam gives the best quality pic, but the focus can't cover the 2.5 meters it's viewing from the cam to the end of the aviary, i guess bacause it's made to look further afield, took me absolutely ages to get it focused clear on the end of the aviary where the birds come out of the indoor bit to the outside flight it's watching, but they go out of focus as the come towards the cam, would a different lens help, cant recall the F number on the lens, thinking it's that which may be my problem?? Anyway, i want to put a PTZ cam in the flights, will hang from the centre of the roof, so will need to view a max distance of 2 meters (flights are 3 meters long, 2 meters wide and 2 high) i plan to make it so i can change it between flights, untill i can afford another couple. i wont be using it for tracking crims, evidence gathering etc, but i do want to get decent images of the birds going about their buiseness, we're talking canaries and song thrushes, so not exactly big birds, and the songies blend in with the bark chip floor a bit, daylight only, as they sleep when it gets dark, and i can see the roosting/nesting areas on the fixed cams, i can only really afford £200 to £300 absolute max for this camera, so i want to get as good as i can get and avoid buying another turd to try and polish into what i really wanted.

well, i paid £107 for a second hand £300 camera, so some scratching on the dome is acceptable, it's only light scratching, i've just bought another off the same bloke for a similar price, so expect that to have a little scratching too. the novus plastic polishes are very fine and gentle, they are used by people who restore 40 year old + pinball machines, where if they dammaged the plastic play field parts they'd ruin the entire machine with no chance of replacements... that's what i bought my novus polishes for... they are 3 bottles of varying grades, so i'd start with the finest, and hopefully they will do the job.... i'd try on a single scratch, which if i do mess it up, i'll position the dome so that's at the back where the cam goes at the extreem end position, it would be nice if i could get new domes cheap, it's only locked up once, so a one off i imagine. i'm looking at getting a proper joystick ptz controller, thing is i want one that is wireless as i view my cams from different tv's/monitors arund the house, so having to trail a twisted pair wire around will be a right pain,

Thinking about a pc based system
gazz replied to gazz's topic in DVR Cards and Software - PC Based Systems
there's a few of us in the british bird breeding scene who have cameras in our aviaries, some have them mainly for security.. pointed at the entrances and surrounding areas, but a couple of us have them for watching the birds, a friend found his system very helpfull when he got home to find a nest destroyed and the eggs chucked about... turns out it was the blackbird **** wanting to mate with the hen again, before his last clutch had even hathed, removing the **** bird, and re-building the nest he saved 3 of the chicks, it's great to watch them when the eggs begin to hatch too, before i had the cctv system, i had a single camera pointed at a song thrush nest, and was able to spot when they stopped feeding 2 of the chicks, so was able to remove them for hand rearing. now got a ptz cam in there, and that is just amazing, being able to follow them about their daily lives, of course i get to see so much more on the camera's than being near the aviary in person, as despite them being captive bred birds, they are still wary of humans. -
I have an aviary, and a month ago i bought a swann dvr8-1200 dvr with 4 of their 480tvl camera's bundled with it, i've added a 520tvl 1/3 sensor cam and a sunkwang ptz cam, and am really getting annoyed with it's lack of functions and ass backwards way of operating things... especially the ptz controls. So i've been thinking of ditching the swann DVR, and replacing it with a PC with a cctv card in it, i'll have to buy all the bits to make the pc, so not sure what specs i need to be looking at, I have a touch screen monitor sitting around, and would like to have that in my bird room as one of the ways to view the camera feeds, and operate the cctv software, i.e. as a mouse... but just touching a box to select which cam to view etc, i'd also use the computer to keep breeding records of the birds on, again using the touch screen with an on-screen keyboard. The main place i view the camera's is the living room and bedroom, ATM i have the 2 BNC outputs from the swann dvr going from the bird room to the house, and one to each TV, plus an infrared remote extender TX at each TV, with the RX in the bird room pointing at the DVR, so i can control it via the remote from either TV. i need to be able to do the same with a pc based system, do i look for a cctv card with bnc video outs? or do that via another board in the pc of the gfx card??? i'd like to have a PTZ joystick and keypad to control most things remotely if possible instead of the infra red remote, need wireless operation, but could i go wifi, blutooth or something like that?? Recording resolution and fps isnt really that much of an issue, i use my current system in live view 99% of the time, i have just set 3 cams to record on movement that are pointed at nests, to capture egg laying, hatching or any other things that may happen, however i'd like to be able to view the system remotely on other computers, as well as my symbian 5 based nokia phone, and i'm not sure if they view the live feed or what would be recorded, any recomendations to what i need??

Seem's these sunkwang cams are £300 when vat is added, so i was looking at getting one, when i spotted a second hand one on ebay, and managed to snaffle it for £107. Arrived today, the dome has a few scratches inside where the cam has rubbed, and there's a little patch of yellowing, from sunlight i guess, i'll have a go at polishing the dome later when i can find my bottles of novus plastic polish. But i have it installed and running, very impressive, i'm just using the swann DVR's ptz control atm, and that is mega fustrating to use... use the arrow keys on the remote to select the arrow on the screen, then press select to activate that direction arrow, why they couldent have let the remote go into ptz mode when ptz is selected... i.e. the menu arrows move the cam directly, other buttons not used in ptz work the zoom focus and iris controls, and if you select the 'save position for cruise' button on the swann ptz menu, it activates the camera's built in osd, but no way to get out of it once brought up, except pulling the power to the cam, But i am looking for something better than this swann pos asap, as it's getting very annoying to use now.

oh don't worry, i wasnt expecting to be able to follow one of the canaries around the flight with the camera, the little buggers twist and turn like fighter jets in training, the songies are a little more direct, but still as fast, guess i have to try and find out who sells these sunkwang cameras in the uk, as they are all that's been recomended.

Alternate remote-access software for Swann?
gazz replied to Blueish's topic in Digital Video Recorders
Has anyone ever got the swann netviewer working with a -1200 dvr?? i have the dvr8-1200, uses the active x based remote viewing crap, when i try with netviewer i just got 'logon failed' all the time, tried the internal ip on my network, the external ip, the ddns name i have etc, but it just wont log in to the dvr. -
i guess there are no other cameras to consider in the UK??? if that's the case, where's the best place to get this particular cam from.... seem's to be about £300 when vat is added as all sites i found do, so it had really really better be the ideal cam for my situation, or i'll really throw my toys out the pram
