  1. Hello all. Almost my first post; finally made all my purchases and thought I’d share what I’ve got and how it goes. I’ll include pictures as it progresses. Gained quite a bit of knowledge between deciding to buy a system (hello Costco) and actually buying it (eh…goodbye Costco). Actually I started looking at cameras on Amazon. One of the reviews on a camera said to look at a super had II instead of that one. I thought, WTF does that mean? I went straight to Google which lead me here. I’ve had a lot of questions come up since then and most of them I was able to answer just by searching the board (and some assistance through PM’s from members…thanks Shockwave.) I finally registered in June so I could see all the images, and now six months after I started looking here I am. So here’s what I ended up purchasing: Got an 8 channel Dahua from Gen IV Technology. Model G4-DCX (without a HD, I purchased a 2TB drive separately off Amazon) Going to run Cat5e with Baluns. Got the DEREVO8P-VPS 8CH for the video/power supply at the DVR end As for cameras I went with 6 GS831SM from Gadspot. I also purchased one GS823EF because I’ve got one camera I’m going to need to crank a little bit more to get the tight shot I want on the distance I have to cover. I’ll update with an overview picture showing camera placements (please feel free to critique, although that probably goes without saying…I mean I am posting it on a message board), and updates on how the install goes along with pictures from the cameras (day and night). The one limiting factor for the install right now is probably the 100+ weather, making the attic 125+. Once it cools down a little though…game on!
  2. So here’s an overview of my place. I’m not sure if I’m going crazy with the camera’s out front or not. I suppose I won’t know for sure until I get them up. Camera 1 is going to be a tight shot on a glass door off of the master bath #2 is ultimately focused on a fence/gate, but between the camera and the gate are two doors (garage/laundry) and a large window. #3 is under a patio. There is one door to the kitch and a slider to a bonus room #4 is a tight shot for the entry way. I think I should be able to get a good picture of anyone approaching the door. #5 is a tight shot on a large window out front. There are plant/trees in front of it, so it’s kind of ‘hidden’ from the street. #6 is an overview of a walk up to the house and the garage/drive way. #7 is focused on the walk way up, but also offers an overview of the rest of the front of the property. I am completely open to thoughts on alternate camera placements. I realize the “north” side of the property doesn’t have a camera. I may add an 8th and final camera there in the future, although I’d like to have an option to put 1 camera inside so I’m a little torn. I also wonder if I’m over doing it out front sticking 4 camera in such close proximity to each other.
