  1. Facepalm the budget, not the options. Pick another standalone NVR IP system with 4 cams that fits the under $1000 budget before facepalming it. You DID notice my custom Dahua option after pointing out the off-the-shelf QSee system (tweaked with aftermarket lenses to fit the locations AND his "custom" requirements) with awesome warranty and some support that was closer to his $500 starting point, yes?
  2. Costco has a good bang for the buck IP system with the QSee if the 6mm lenses work for your locations. If not, maybe mix and match some lenses to match your needs. You might be able to get a 16ch Dahua nvr and a mix of 1.3 and 2MP cams with Poe injectors for around a grand if you brave aliexpress. Got a free computer to use for nvr or dvr? Geovision 4ch analog card (200) with, say, a CNB dome or two, and a Samsung 2080R bullet, and maybe a Speco would be about a grand. That'd give a good mix of analogs if you didn't want to go Dahua IP. NVR+ on a desktop with a couple of 1.3mp Dahua bullets, a pair of 2.0mp bullets, and a Zyxel Poe switch could be had for about a grand if you had the computer.
  3. They're some pretty good ads for either possible Darwin Awards or why women live longer than men. I had a few others but they didn't involve ladders so I didn't post them. One should've required a parachute for safety gear.

    1 Camera + DVR help

What is your budget? You want face identification or just the ability to show your insurance company that something happened? What distance? Got an existing spare computer you can use with an IP camera to save some money on the NVR? If you're not fussy on IDing anybody just about anything will do. If you want to ID someone at night at a distance you'll be spending some money and probably needing two cameras.
  5. Here are some UK approved laddering techniques. Not sure on the brands used but they come highly recommended.
  6. Precisely my point. The startup cost of the cameras is going to be a pittance compared to the long-term operating costs. Trying it out for a month on a small scale may prevent a staggering unanticipated deficit after a full-scale rollout. A project like that needs deep pockets.
  7. Have you priced your estimated bandwidth costs? If price is a big issue then monthly charges over, say, 5 years may be intimidating. Definitely consider h.264 solutions over MPEG/mjpeg ones even if startup costs are slightly higher. I would even recommend buying one of each solution you find and doing a price vs performance comparison before outfitting that many vehicles with a limited budget.
  8. Hypothetical question- Is calling people rude and insulting them by saying they're incapable of following your simple directions MORE or LESS likely to get them to help you for free? Pride and receiving things for free don't usually go together. You, as a salesman, might also compare this to sales and customer service. No matter how badly you want to chew a customer out (the reason doesn't matter), giving in to your pride and temper will cost you their business as well as the business of many of those they talk to in the future. Apply this lesson to your business. Look back into the past and see if you could predict your present. Analyze your present and determine how to make your customers (and helpers on this forum) look forward to giving you their money (and advice) in the future. Surprisingly, some people on here are apparently still willing to help you.

Help a noob build a system

You might want to play with samples first before popping for a whole system. Visual quality might not be good enough for what you want, though. A bunch of these will blow your budget but depending on where you want to place the cams they might be a better bet, so to speak... also available in pinhole version. http://www.axis.com/products/cam_p1214e/
  10. You measure your self-esteem by what you can convince your clients to spend on cameras? Or, worse, someone else's professionalism by the fact that they admit to hanging at least one camera priced under $2000 without knowing anything about the backstory?
  11. Simplest way would be to find a small TV with both VGA and composite inputs that did PIP. That isn't as popular an option on TVs since analog tuners fell out of fashion though. Not sure if you'll find one that does it nowadays. I haven't seen one recently anyway. Picture quality would be horrible if you used an old CRT that did PIP and used a VGA to composite converter for the computer screen. I think I'd just get a separate small LCD TV with composite input and hang it on the wall by my computer. You'd get excellent computer display and cctv quality that way and not bog down your computer. I bet it would be cheaper, too, especially if you bought a small LCD TV on a good sale or used. Might still be worth asking a TV shop about PIP between inputs on a small TV that displayed VGA or DVI or whatever your computer puts out.

    Sentry360 2mp 1080P box camera with 5-50mm lens

Adding it seemed to make it worse. No time to fiddle with it now.

    FS: 48V power supply

Nice Duc. I think if I end up duck hunting I'll probably go a bit more vintage though. Air cooled with exposed engine and trellis frame. And either solid red or wearing the Italian flag.

    Sentry360 2mp 1080P box camera with 5-50mm lens

Bit better today but Chrome gives me 10060:Disconnected error after displaying the Sentry360 home screen with h.264 quality information. IE just gives me a red X on that screen and apparently installed the ActiveX control 3 times. 64 bit Win 7 here.

    FS: 48V power supply

Nice ride on the Duc BTW. I've always loved the sound of them. Rode a 900SS with carbon fibre Termignoni pipes once. Sweet ride, awesome sound.

Nice to see some riders around here. Any guesses as to what my current ride is? I also bet that Mr. Winkle rides a Buell.

    NVR RECORDING FPS

You'll always appreciate the extra detail in the 2MP cams but you'll be able to figure out exactly what's going on whether or not you're at 7fps or 30. Well, unless you're catching card sharps or master pickpockets.
  18. Call Lorex. They sometimes have issues on their end with the free service where clients aren't set up properly. Might save a bunch of hair pulling if there truly is nothing wrong on your end.
  19. There are BNC/composite to VGA adapters too, if you think that'll work better for you than buying a monitor with multiple inputs. That won't solve the problem of easy switching between sources because most monitors have just one VGA input (cable swapping involved).

Sony Effio-E Super HAD 700TVL ANY GOOD

I'd run cat 5e with power/video/audio baluns. Pic should be at least as good and it'll be dirt simple to switch to IP later on. Plus if you get your own crimper and a 1000' box of cat5e then you'll be able to run network cable wherever you want in the future. That's just the bonus, but then I use any excuse to buy more tools.

Sony Effio-E Super HAD 700TVL ANY GOOD

It's a Chinese no-name cam with a rock-bottom price that you're buying sight-unseen. They look like a good company to deal with though. 100% EBay rating, they've been in business for a while, plus they've got a retail showroom in Manchester. If you're close then go visit, or maybe ask them if they have a good demo video of the camera online somewhere. If the video quality is good enough for you, you can buy a whole bunch of them for the price of a good name brand PTZ though. Pitch 'em when they die and add reinstallation costs to the total cost of ownership. Look up some prices on Axis PTZs to make yourself feel better.

    What security cameras sometime capture.

Kind of ironic or zen-karmic-with-a-twist when a video produced by a technology usually used to chronicle the ugliness in society is used to promote happiness and brotherly love (and sell Coke) and is then ripped off and used to sell "Love Everybody" pins and t-shirts. Methinks they didn't totally understand the point of the original Coke ad. Or maybe they did...

    Remote Farm Installation

Haha, cute! Good luck with the project. I'm sure more than one of us would like pics and updates on how the project went as well.
