Having trouble with signal loss using Baluns active/passive
GrouchoBoucho replied to CCTVNOOB1975's topic in System Design
i'm sorry, but that made no sense at all. do you know what punctuation is? sentences? it's not even clear what the actual problem/question is. at only 400' you shouldn't need active baluns - i suspect you've wired something wrong. -
the trick i've found with dd-wrt is in getting the right version for the specific hardware. my main router is an asus rt-n16; i picked up a couple rt-n12s to go with it using wds. i had to use a newer firmware for the 12s (they didn't add support until build 18xxx-something), so i flashed the 16 with the same version, and had all kinds of problems (including the vpnd being broken). i tried several different builds on the 16 but ended up going back to build 16484 (which i'd been running for months before getting the 12s), and the latest build at the time (19342) on the 12s, to get everything rock-solid. at this point, it's running a 5mp and 1.3mp camera off one, and a 2mp and 3mp cameras off the other, with zero dropouts.

What are the pro's installing on a budget? Suggestions?
GrouchoBoucho replied to Toaster's topic in Security Cameras
still using the 24vfs, getting into more dahua for budget mp. -
I have installed a lot of dahua and I really like their pss software. So you are saying install sd cams that can be managed wirelessly with the pss software. That sounds like an excellent solution. I just have always been told to stay away from wifi when it comes to cctv because it is not that reliable. But I guess if the video is being stored on the sd card, and then being downloaded with pss software then that would work great. What do you think? *analog* wireless is restricted and unreliable unless you pay big money for industrial-grade stuff. one of the main problems with it is that the consumer analog band is already littered with other devices, plus each camera must be on its own channel and have its own receiver - it gets very impractical, very quickly. *wifi* can actually be done with good reliability and high cost efficiency *if* properly done, using the right equipment, with a well-designed setup. ubiquiti is often mentioned around here for this purpose; i believe some of their wireless stations can be had in the $100-$150 range. beyond that' it's always possible to use some low-cost routers, load them with dd-wrt firmware to set up a wds network, and attach any number of commercially-available or custom-built directional antennas to give you high-gain, long-range signal paths. the main difference is that you can run a large number of cameras (depending on total bandwidth) over one link, rather than needing a separate link for each one.

$250x12 for dvrs (don't forget one for the office) + $100x24 for cameras = $5400... or get some 2mp dahua domes with sd recording for $200 each for a total of $4800. cheaper, no? add the multipoint wifi between buildings; all cams recording internally, managed by pss software on office pc.

CCTV with different infra-red frequency?
GrouchoBoucho replied to t010203's topic in Security Cameras
ir cameras and leds usually operate in the 840-860nm range - these are the leds that you see giving a faint red glow. "invisible ir" usually runs around 940nm and standard cameras won't pick it up well, if at all. if you can't see the leds glowing, they're probably in this range. your cameras needs to be a "day/night" type to work with any ir - if it stays in color all the time, chances are it won't work. -
High-Quality B/W?

So... it's faux security-cam, right? isn't that what i just said? -
High-Quality B/W?
GrouchoBoucho replied to PeteCress's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
standard broadcast/studio cam, processed to b/w and the frame and timeclock added in. probably digital betacam or dv-cam. notice the clock is counting in smpte frames - never ever seen a surveillance cam or recorder do that. -
the differences amount to a few horizontal pixels depending on whose definition you're going by. for all intents and purposes, the two are the same.

are you sure it's cat5e, not cat3?

you need to hire a professional who's experienced with this stuff, or you'll end up dumping a ton of money into something that won't work properly.

motion detection
GrouchoBoucho replied to jeromephone's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
it really depends on how gv handles motion detection processing. some dvrs are very efficient at it, some not so much. most times you'll find that if an nvr does its own motion detection, then it won't take motion triggers from the cameras; and if it's designed to use the cameras' motion detection, then the nvr won't have the function built-in. so if you've already settled on gv cameras and nvr, you get whichever route gv has decided to go, and which is "better" becomes irrelevant. -
Connecting camera to Digital Watchdog VMAX480
GrouchoBoucho replied to Hudsonator's topic in System Design
you need a network video recorder (nvr), or a hybrid dvr, to record ip cameras. the digital watchdog is neither; it will not work with any ip cameras, period. -
tell your client that they're wasting their money with anything under $3000 for this setup. it's an oft-told tale, of someone who "can't afford" a better system, how they went cheap, then found it didn't do the job when it was really needed, and they ended up going for the better system eventually anyway... except now they're in the hole the additional money they already spent on the crap (costco) system. dahua makes some good standalone hybrids that you should be able to find for well under $1000, that will get you started on building a mixed analog/ip setup. if you can eventually upgrade their other system to another dahua dvr, they'll be able to easily view and manage both from the pss software.

Experts, please help out with an IP setup.
GrouchoBoucho replied to T-boner's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
cat5e handles gigabit just fine. unless you have a 10gbe switch and nvr with 10gbe nic, there's no need for cat6. -

new to forum and DVR recording missing incidents/stopping
GrouchoBoucho replied to hdman93's topic in General Digital Discussion
to be blunt, these sound like common problems with these sorts of cheap systems. this is what happens when people fall for a low price and pretty pictures. 80gb drive? how old is these system? i don't think anything has come with an 80gb drive in about 5-6 years.
