Hi,
I joined this forum yesterday and had introduced myself but somehow that post is not appearing. I must also admit that I am not very adept at using internet forums.

I am in college in India and I recently moved to a new studio apartment. My parents have fitted it with this Alba Urmet security DVR and a single Sony camera. The Sony camera looks similar to this -

The DVR is 4 channel. I tried to search for pictures but could not find any on the internet. The DVR is not connected to the internet. I have used it for about three weeks and noticed the following peculiarities-
File format - It records files in .dat format. This format can be played on a computer by using the oldest version of KM player. No other software seems to play it. Not even VLC! I am able to convert it to avi using "MyFFVideoConvertor"
Is this DVR obsolete? Do I need to change it?

Playback Speed - When I play these dat files on the computer, they seem to play at a faster pace. Its almost like fast forwarding!
Any suggestions to make the video play at normal speed?

Huge File Size - The recording settings are as follows-
Image resolution	800x600
Image quality	Medium
Frame Rate	10
Bit Rate	256 kbps
To ensure that I save on space, I have set the other three channels to record only for 15 minutes each day. Inspite of such low settings the file size is almost 2Gb's for a 24 hour period.
Any suggestions to reduce the size of the files?
