Low cost, Multi-port (4 min) PoE Hub?
Thomas replied to tazo's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
I'd also be very worried about low end PoE equipment. It's a pretty new feature for networking gear and one that has the potential to damage equipment if it's implemented poorly on the hardware. -
Any possibility of unsupported codecs or video encryption ? Very likely. What DVR did it come out of?
-
geez I didn't know there was so much dislike for vivotek floating around. I've only gotten one of the wireless models, and it worked when Axis didn't. Although I have to agree I didn't care for the image too much. maybe the other models are worse ? for a cheap IP cam, it was usable IMHO unfortunately there aren't that many low cost wireless IP cams that work. I wish Axis would fix the problem with the 207w. If you're going cheap, then it generally doesn't make sense to go IP anyway.

You won't get a longer run out of CAT6E. Voltage drop on it will be the same as CAT5. You will get less cross talk which might get you a slightly better signal at the same distances but it's not going to be radically further and not worth the extra cost. The difference between CAT6 and CAT5 is just the cross talk between pairs. This allows for higher speeds for data transmission. It does not extend the broadcast distance at all.

If you're going to go with D-Link, then just get Vivotek, who D-Link OEMs from. It will be cheaper.

What was the power type on the camera?

Poe In > Power + Coax Out? Any such animal?
Thomas replied to ipcs's topic in General Digital Discussion
I don't have the PoE spec in front of me but you'd need something to step down the power and something to trick the PoE switch into thinking the other end is a PoE device. -
Looking for some advice on seting up 4 cameras.
Thomas replied to hypnotic7's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Thomas thank you for the reply. What about going CCTV route. I see some packages in my range, but i have no idea which brand names are good quality. It really doesn't matter if cameras are ip or cctv as long as my friend is able to see streaming video over the internet. PTZ is just an extra and also is not a requirement. Any further assistance would be greatly appreciated!!!! In all honesty, I think your budget is too small to consider even doing the set up. You'll be looking at lower end cameras and a poor DVR. -
ACTi makes a fairly sold camera and cost wise it's a good alternative to Axis. The key difference being that installers can actually make some money on ACTi where as Axis's pricing makes that difficult. But Vivotek isn't a viable option. The cameras have a **** image and a couple of things on the SDK side that make them a PITA.

Looking for some advice on seting up 4 cameras.
Thomas replied to hypnotic7's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Your budget is too low to consider PTZs for that project. You'll barely fit in 4 cameras for IP work. You could go with a lower in IP camera like Vivotek but their stuff is ****. -
General storage/motion trigger question
Thomas replied to alee's topic in General Digital Discussion
For a school, usual working hours are between 6 am to 6 pm. I would assume between 80 to 100% motion depending on where the camera is. It will be overkill but better to err on the side of caution. -
Money might be an issue though .. he could just get dead cheap CCTV cameras (useless outside ofcourse LOL) bought from ebay, like 2nd hand even, and a dead cheap 4 channel card from like tiger direct or somewhere, useless for any real security app ofcourse .. maybe just a USB DVR .. the really cheap ones .. then use generic software .. depends what kind of budget they have really as IP cameras are not cheap. IP cameras still require proprietary activeX for what he needs to do. Not really. Some cameras like Vivotek and D-Link use an ActiveX control to handle the streams. For those you have to write a shell but they provide SDKs for such things. Other cameras will allow you to access the stream in other ways. General rule of thumb: If the camera supports MJPEG as a streaming option you can use that and a crafted command to the webserver to grab the stream. Axis uses this method. If the camera does not support MJPEG then you'll have to incorperate some sort of application to get the stream. But these cameras are rarer then the MJPEG kind.

IP Cam SDK for Video Analytic integration
Thomas replied to isafekurt's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Having done this a few time the process is very simple. 1. Go to manufactures site. 2. Check if SDK is online. 3. If so download. 4. If not, contact them. This method will be more common. Usually they will mail it to you. -
I'm refering to the following: Your massive spam routine. Your faking a second account to astroturf for you. This post sums it up pretty well: http://www.cctvforum.com/viewtopic.php?p=53488&highlight=#53488 The ice you skate on is thin. In most other forums you'd be banned.

Please keep personal attacks to yourself Deluxecctv. You aren't exactly in a good place to throw stones from.
-
Never tried it.
-
I'm baffled by this statement. Care to expound? If a person belives they are in a safe area (seeing the cameras) and suffers a personal attack, it can create libility for the properity owner if the cameras do not function. A lawyer can explain it better then I.

Strange Moving Band in My Monitor
Thomas replied to Willie's topic in Video Transmission/Control Devices
The problem is with the cable and the shielding speficly. TV signals are timed at 60 hz which happens to be the same frequncy that AC power runs at. (This is where the 60 ips comes from.) That rolling bar comes from the camera and the TV being out of sync. If it was constant then you would blame the TV. But the intermittent problem shows that it's a power line being turned on and off. -
determining good and bad coaxial cables
Thomas replied to pingsquare's topic in Video Transmission/Control Devices
Monster cables are overpriced junk. And the gold plating on the tips? Junk. If they did the connectors in soild gold you still wouldn't see enough of a differance to tell. -
Or Point of Sale.

Can i use RG62 cable for cctv installations
Thomas replied to Kamei's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
Yes. You're going to have terrible video signal. -
Never really been sold on NVR's...yet
Thomas replied to carrseom's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Why? Those are all things we do with our DVR's now. No, Pelco calls thier Variation Coaxatron. I don't know what GE calls theirs up the cable method. Except it's not transparent to the end user. User upgrades to Rev XXXX of a camera to Rev XXXXX+1. And now thier software no longer works with thier software. Before you dismiss this, I'd like to point out that Toshiba did this earlier this year on a single camera. And supporting Axis's cameras today is no guarrenty that they will continue to work that way in the future. And I can find features in Analog DVRs that NVR's don't have. But in the end it doesn't matter. Because all of those features are simply software. Any feature we name can be replicated by the other type via code. Because that's all it is. -
The reason you've been given grief is rather simple. You're trying to pull a fast one. Users posting from this IP address Securityexpert Deluxecctv.com Kinda neat but the admins and moderators can see your IP address. So lets look at this from the moderator/admin viewpoint shall we? Now this post implies that you're a dealer with a relationship to the site you're pimping. The problem is that your words indicate that you are two seperate entites. Which your IP address shows us to not be the case. So your post is a lie? And repeated a lot? I will leave it to the reader to draw thier own conclusions. But I'll tell you what my guesses are. I'm guessing you're a guy starting up a site. You're new to the industry and came across us. You don't really understand what the mods and admins can see, and you decided to drum up some bussiness. You figure that testimonals and word of mouth is the best form, so you lie. In your mind it's a little white one I'm guessing. No body will be hurt, right? You aren't a scam artist or a bad person. But this is a "trust" industry. Ask any of the dealers here how long they put up with a company that lies to them. Ask them how long thier users will put up with them lieing. So here is the deal. You've gotten caught. And you can make some feeble attempts at proclaiming you are innocent. You can try to claim it's a mircle you both have the same ip address (and magicly the same writing style, typos and grammer issues). But you're ISP will be more then happy to rat you out. So lets skip that step. Your best option is to plead you made a mistake and try to man up to it and move beyond it. At some point you could become a valued member of this community. But don't send me a PM for dealer access anytime soon.

Dummy cameras can set up all kinds of liability issues. Don't use them.

Video Insight questions (Tom or Kerry?)
Thomas replied to ncpilot's topic in DVR Cards and Software - PC Based Systems
The network client can change most of the features over a LAN. And the Enterprise Manager comes with the software. Depending on the verison of your CD it's either in a folder or an option under custom install with Install Shield. There is no additional fee. It won't let you do that normally. It can be overriden with an event trigger but then you end up splitting framerate. It's a hardware limitation rather then a software one. Yes.
