    Thoughts about this camera

You can also cut and paste the specs/model number and attach the camera picture.

    Laptop Issues

Quickbooks and Quicken Data in particular. I used to get $75 an hour with a two hour miniaum to recover that data. Nine out of ten times I had it done in under 20 min and the people were greatful to pay.
  3. It's like any tool Rory. Sometimes it's the right tool and some times it is. Just because 90% of the screws you deal with are Phillips head doesn't mean that a torx bit will never be useful.
  4. The marketing for IP is overhyped. But there are some legitmate advanatages to IP. Wireless: You can encrypt the stream and the Wi-Fi standards have better handling of interfearance. Remote use: For single camera remote sites, 1 IP camera can be a cost effective option. Potential benfits: Forensics: With current generation of CCTV gear you can't do much in the way of post video Forensics. What you see is what you see. But Photographers can do a ton of stuff right now. So why can we? Because we lack some of the info they have. A high end digital SLR will record the properties of the Lens. How it's focused, etc. From there you can actully start doing something with the data. NTSC and PAL both look like there will not be enough bandwith for that kind of data. IP will be able to do it. High Resolutions: Right now no one in the analog industry is pushing for a move to something like HD. We're pretty rapidly growing closer to the resolution cap for cameras. IP is probley going to beat Analog to the market for really high end solutions. And while I'm willing to call the IP people's BS, I will point out Kensplace that you have a bit of disinformation in your post. While the cameras themselves will put out 30/25 fps at thier resolution, it doesn't mean the recorder is.

    Laptop Issues

One bad sector happens. But if it starts/keeps growing even at a small rate then the drive is heading for failure.
  6. You're going to have a problem with false positives and negitives from the software. While there are programs that will do this, they are expensive and ment to be a suppliment for manned systems. Lighting changes, face shape changes (gain/loss of weight), facial hair, etc. Also you will need a number of cameras at differant heights to capture short and tall people.

I need a 4-8channel DVR to record conferences.

CCTV systems are compressing at a much more aggressive set of settings then the files used for generating Movie DVDs. So if you are expecting to use the system and get something the quality of a professional DVD...it's not going to happen. DVD's generally have an 60 db S/N rating. Most CCTV gear tops out at 52 db. The differants is signifigant. (And so is the cost.) Motion detection is generally on a per camera basis, so it's going to be even more of a pain to synch up then the camcorder method. And most systems are not going to support a heavy load for streaming. Put more then a few clients on there ad you can overload the DVR. Keep in mind that differant types of systems have differant kinds of focus. CCTV Security Systems have to focus on balancing image quality vs length of storage. So some trade offs to both have to be accepted. Where as pro level broadcasting gear doesn't really care. But why do a direct conection to the PC for all of the cameras? Why not have them record to the media they use and pull the video off of that when needed.

    Day Night Camera

You aren't going to find alot of cameras that give a higher resolution.
  9. You may not get much help simply because many people haven't heard of that card.

    night club camera installation

GSS, keep in mind that while color is nice, BW is actully better for low light situations. The human eye works off of contrast. Color provides great contrast with good lighting, but BW will give much better contrast in lower lighting situations.

    Warehouse installation

Nope, it's $40 cheaper or so.

    D#%!! newfangled DSL modems!!!

Cable is great as long as the area you live in isn't densely populated. Cable connections are wired as loops. As someone uses bandwith there is less bandwith on the loop for others. Four kids filesharing will lower everyone's speed on the loop.

I need a 4-8channel DVR to record conferences.

You don't want a DVR for this solution. It's going to be a painful choice that isn't going to meet your needs. What you want is some camcorders, a machine with a video editing suite and a copy of Window's Media Server to do the streaming. I get this request twice a week and in the long run, you really will be happier doing it the right way.

    Is this a "mission impossible"??

You're probley going to have to be point to point with the wireless portion...which is going to remove the simple part. This might be a situation that works better with an IP based solution.
  15. And keep in mind the price of copper is going up and going up and going up. It's going to end up being somewhat expensive and really is the last part you should count pennys on. Ripping wire out and rewiring sucks.
  16. No-ip.com currently uses a suscription model now. They offer a free service as a hook, but then charge you if you want to host a mail server or a domain name...

    Dealer forum?

It depends. There are some other factors involved. The 25 posts need to indicate to me you are a dealer. If you have posts edited or deleted then I tack on penalty posts. There is also some serious time lag involved, I have to read the posts and I do this in my free time. Note I said my free time. Please note that sending me PMs with your licence number doesn't help any. I really don't have the time or schedual to allow me to call goverment agencys. Nor do I feel like wasting what little free time I have on hold.
  19. Focus the cameras on the ground. Much, much, much easier.

    Any one try MAC OS?

At the moment you can't set it up via bootloader. XP doesn't support EFI on the motherboards and the intel macs don't have a BIOS. (EFI is the next generation replacement to the BIOS) You can use Bootcamp which allows some virtualization of the hardware level to run XP. (Bootcamp isn't a true VM, it's just translating EFI into BIOS and back.)

What not to do in a robbery

Except that it didn't look like he could see out the door/window area. He couldn't know if his line of fire was empty or not.
  22. Is the RG-59 copper shielded or alumium shielded? That's going to make a huge differance.

    Extreme WZ20

Would you really trust an image like that though Kensplace? Particularly if the images could be set up to create bias?
  24. Ocular, keep in mind that your thinking in terms on a single stream. From the software end, we have think in terms of 16 to 200 to 1,000,000 streams. Streaming 16 streams of uncompressed video across a network at full resolution is more then most networks can handle. Keep in mind that one of the limations that we face is the speed of the PCI bus, which is much faster (Current PCI spec, not PCI-X or PCI-E) then a 10/100 network with much lower latency. I understand the fustration of "My application only needs X so all programs should be writen to do X." but it's not an idea that scales well.

Help with planning a Geo DVR setup

You do know that the recent VNC issue affected Mac, Linux and Windows ports right? And porting software from one OS to another often requires a complete rewrite.
