  1. I know alot of people who swear by slipstreaming them but I've never been happy with the results. It could be that I'm not doing it correctly as well. I also think it's a PITA to reupdate the CD every few Tuesdays. But we're into personal preferance rather then hard facts.
  2. From a software end, the dual cores offers some intresting advantages. Alot of applications are single threaded (all tasks run in serial, games do this alot becuase it keeps the timing of sound and video in sync) but what we do is generally multi-threaded. In simple terms, cpu 1 handles cameras 1 to 8 and cpu 2 handles 9 to 16. This leave enough overhead to start doing intresting work with facial IDs and all of the other "CSI" tech.
  3. Given your requirements you are looking at needing a 5.5 mb/s (upload) connection. This assumes perfect latency. Real world number would be closer to 6 to 6.5. His comments about forgetting the questions was aimmed at me for asking the two questions I asked. Given the context, it is almost impossible for that to have been a slam at me.
  4. There are two ways. One is to find one of the monthly .exes that are put out for those with "licence" issues. Or you could just D/L them from automatic update. I'd go with Auto update because I tend to find it horks installs less.
  5. USNEWYORK Please note this forum is a mix of people with differant specialties. Some of us know cameras, some of us know networking and other have other niches. Members of this board range from Professional to Amature. Please note that your PM was unwarrented. Normally I can see how misunderstandings occur but in this case I have to point out your reply is completely out of proportion for any possible slight you may have read into Jaspers comments. Perhaps you expected that this is a trival question that can be tossed off without knowing any variables. Perhaps you are fustrated. But at this point I don't really care. If you want help, then be civil. If you can't be polite then don't expect polite answers.
  6. Can I count a couple of them that our resellers did? A retail chain that currently has 60 locations with 30 cameras each set up with a VPN to the home office that lets the LP people watch all 1800 cameras at will, control the PTZ's, review video, etc. The LP guys were crazy for it because it saves them a ton of drive time.
  7. I'm sure some of the cards on E-bay are legit. But if you're asking me which way I'd place my money if I had to bet....
  8. Jasper and Rory....are they the same person? Lets look at the facts shall we? Both use Twist Ons. Both will use thier teeth to strip wire. Both like Beer. Both are Human. I leave this for the reader to decide but clearly it's not just random chance that they have so much in common. [Edit: Cause I don't speak english so good.]
  9. How many FPS, and what resolution?
  10. Hardware routers. Move your layer of defense outward.

The Components section allows more control over what parts of Windows is installed. The OEM runonce section is a little odd, and I had a pain trying to get it to accept a variable for the CD-Rom drive.

To IP or not IP..that is the question...

While I agree with Cooperman for the most part, there is a place for IP on lower end systems. But it is definitly a niche use. Wireless IP can be a much better solution for some users then standard wireless CCTV cameras. But for 95% of uses, conventional cameras will be a better, cheaper option.

    Progressive Scan Cameras

I'll dig up the model number for that Covi but it's not one of thier domes. It's one of the box types with four outputs.
  14. You can aquire one of thier units, use an RS-485 to 232 converter and then just listen to the serial connection to see what commands it's sending.

    How to reset Geo password?

If you have physical root access to the system you can't design a password system that isn't crackable.
  16. I'm not sure. I never tried to create a second partitions. The slipstream can format the drive before hand. But you could use fdisk before hand to do the partitioning. It won't add alot of time.

    Progressive Scan Cameras

You just get a 720 by 480 image. I've seen one running with one of our systems. The image quality is just amazing.
  18. It dates back from the days when vowels cost money in Unix systems (and you thought Ma bell was bad with phones.).

    battery backup ups

Something to remember....what is the quality of the coax? 75% braided or 95% braided? One is more expensive then the other but worth the cost.
  20. Bah, RTFM isn't new. I recall a system admin telling me that way back when I was dialing into his system.
  21. Just put in the right number of XXXXs in. The install will throw up an error and require you to enter the key. Or if you feel really slick once you have the basics down, you make a slipstream CD for each machine with thier codes in and drivers preloaded.

    Progressive Scan Cameras

The down side to Covi is that it's going to be expensive. If you can get one for less then four figures I would be suprised.

    OIL FILLED PC!!

It's not the performance for RDRAM (which is quite good actully) it's the cost. A gig of the stuff costs the same as gold per ounce. My annoyance is that my wife's machine uses the stuff and she's trying to get me to upgrade the memory.

    OIL FILLED PC!!

If you're switching between apps then HD speed isn't the factor. It sounds like a ram or CPU bottleneck. But for the love of god, tell me that isn't RDRAM....
  25. SP2 is cummulative. Which method of slipstreaming are you using and what is the source of the XP CD? (OEM Branded, OEM Unbranded, XP retail, An ISO who's source you don't want to discuss)
