Does the Avtech DVR have a PTZ control function? If it does, I'm pretty sure it will have a Pelco or AD protocol. Sensornet is proprietary to AD. AD's RS422 and 485 are tri state which is proprietary to AD also. If the small network camera onm the register doesn't work for you, try a pendant mount getting the camera closer to the register in the area you need to get the shot. If that doesn't work for you, try a camera farther away with a zoom lens Then if you need further enhancement, you can use the digital zoom feature. Again ask the sales reps for the lenses they recommend for their camera.

Find the guys hiring and buy them a cup of coffee. Get to know them. Way back when I wanted to be a cop, I rode with cops.

Google the manufacture and model number of all cameras. Find the install manuals for them. Look for dip switches, buttons for onscreen programmimg. Use a magnifying glass to read the board where the wires attach. You also have to know what voltage the cameras are. Here in the states they would be either 24 volts A/C or 12 volts D/C. If you can, ask your father-in-law for the power supplies he was using.

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply. Actually, the 2 cam balun I'm thinking would be passive - the power is for the cameras (bad drawing!). A 24VAC supply is a good idea - less current down the UTP and less interference. Can you recommend any good 24VAC cameras? Cat6 here is only marginally more expensive than CAT5e, so will definately take that on board. The bar cameras I think I'll use active baluns, since there is going to be a dedicated supply up in the void anyway. If I use actives, do they have to be active at both ends, or can you mix 'n' match active & passives? Thanks again. I appreciate it. shimokita. I have not seen the environment you want to record, I don't know what you have access to to obtain cameras. I will suggest get wide dynamic range cameras so they can be adjusted to low or difficult lighting. You can mix active and passive baluns and there is great debate over which to make the active balun. My opinion is at the camera. The camera transmits the signal, the balun amplifies it. It is transmitted over wiring to the DVR. If you use an active recieving balun, anything that could degrade the signal after being transmitted is amplified including noise. Have you looked at IP cameras? Megapixel cameras? What do you want to see? Do you want a general view of a big area with no capability of forensic video? Do you want video of each register and see every transaction? Do you want to see the transactions from the registers printed on the screen with the video? That is called, POS, point of sale. If you upgrade to megapixel, you will have to upgrade your DVR too. Lots of questions to answer if you don't want to throw money away on a system. I will help you design this for no monetary compensation if you trust me. I just need some answers to these and a lot more.

Welcome to the forum. The 2 camera balun receiver is powered. I'm assuming the transmitting balun is too? I would also make sure the 4 camera baluns are too. I would also change to 24 volts AC if you have dual voltage cameras. 12 volt cameras for me have always had problems with induction from lights and control voltages. You can also get a variable power supply for voltage drops. I have never used a dahua anything so I know not about these. I might even use Cat6 on the long run. You also need to know if the ceiling is above acoustical tile or hardpan and if it is a plenum rated ceiling. Match the cable to the environment. One more thing, I would definitely point cameras so they watch each other to prevent vandalism/theft.

Doesn't anyone have concerns about these backdoors or are you just trunk slammers installing cheapazz cameras? You call yourself a security technician then discover a vulnerablity and look the other way? Like Yakdude say's that don't fly.

Here are some troubleshooting ideas. Unless you really crimped down on those cables, they should be OK. You are not suffocating them. A little more information would be nice. What kind of camera? What kind of cable? What kind of DVR? Could someone have changed the settings somewhere? Turned off a camera input? Changed a termination? Faulty cable end? Check the camera cable input. Is it correctly plugged in? Is record turned on for that camera? Is it selected in the DVR live view? Is it getting power? Divide and conquer. S Video? BNC? RCA? CAT5? You say you have an extra camera. Replace the suspect camera with the known good camera. If the known good works it is a bad camera. If not the next piece is the cable. Take the known good to the recording device with a new cable into the same input. While doing this, replace the video cable with a known good cable. Try another input on the DVR, you might have had a surge. I would get a UPS, uninterrupted power supply, for the camera and the DVR.

Some DVR's terminate the RS485 with a programmed switch, Some cameras have an EOL End of line dip switch. If either of these are not avaiable, try a 120 Ohm resistor across the last camera's 485 wires in parralel. http://www.rs485.com/rs485spec.html

I have always hollowed out a larger hole if necessary to hide the terminations. My pet peeve, and I will call names here, American Dynamics brought out a nice dome camera that could not see down a corridor when mounted on a ceiling. The design of this little dome was such that when the camera was level looking down the hall, the plastic dome cover would not fit. Since then I have run across 3 other manufacturers that had the same problem, Stardot, Ganz and Digital Watchdog. The Stardot dome would not fit when it was pointed straight down.

That wiring method facilitates +12 over the lens wires and then a -12 volts to reverse the function. Like was mentioned, meter the terminations before hooking them up.
