What Motherboard? GIGABYTE GA-945PL-S3 or ???

Thanks. I already have several UPS's. I guess I'm wondering more from a point of problems issue on the board with GV cards than performance. My last GV system was running a board with an AMD processor and it was fine for speed (AMD XP2000 which I think was only around 1.6Ghertz). Could only run the GV-600 since most others would of had the Glint\Via issue, which at the time, I should have just bought the 650 and upgraded to a different motherboard but I wanted to make my old AMD board last a couple extra years which it did, but now, going forward, I mostly only use Intel\Asus combo's. When are you going to order your MX? I'm on the fence between that and the VM at the moment. I'll have to research it further I guess. Also, what don't you like about the P5GZ? That looks like a good board as well for a Core 2 Duo system (That's the board Collin recomended above in this thread, just wondering what you like more about the 5L over the P5GZ?). I can't remember the difference between the 2 chipsets (GZ versus G).

What Motherboard? GIGABYTE GA-945PL-S3 or ???

Read that but I won't be overclocking this board and I was planning on running Windows 2000 or 2003 server on it and I never use hybernation or standby modes on any servers. Anything else I might be missing though for running the GV-600 on it? (Note: earlier I said GV-650 but I keep forgetting I still only have the GV-600-8cam v3). The 650 is what I wish I had. BTW, any descent upgrade paths from a GV-600 to a GV650 or GV800 that can do Version 8.1? My GV-600 only does 7.x and I missed the upgrade promo they had a while back plus I don't know how good the promo was (you could trade in your old cards for new 8.x cards or something but my vendor never got back to me with pricing info on the upgrade promo).

What Motherboard? GIGABYTE GA-945PL-S3 or ???

Hello Rory. I'm looking at that same micro board as well but I can't decide between the p5l-mx and p5l-vm. I wouldn't mind paying the extra $19 for the p5l-VM as it has a NewEgg 5 star rating versus the 4 star p5l-MX. (I live by NewEgg ratings, can't help it - to be fair though, the VM only has 23 reviews compared to the MX 27 reviews). I also only buy Asus boards and will never switch. VM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131046 MX: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131041 Anything wrong with the P5L-VM for a Geovision GV-650 that you can think of (or any reason the MX would be the better choice versus the VM if the $19 isn't too much of a concern)? It's for my home system that I'm upgrading. Probably pair it with the E6300 (unless I splurge and get the better value E6600). http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819115005 Anything I'm not seeing with the VM that I should be that would make it not be a good choice for a GV-650?

How to connect TCP/IP source to Geo?

Checked with WirelessEye and he seems to prove my theory: http://www.cctvforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=6835 "Your video stream is just a bunch of packets to the wireless, interference will cause your frame rate to slow or even stop." This is good news. Now, I just have to test it out as it sounds like no one else on the forum has done this yet. I can hardly wait. That is the only problem I currently have with analog wireless is that the interference triggers Geovision to record all the time because of the picture rolling, hopping. With a wireless IP camera, since it's all just a data stream, the slow framerates shouldn't cause Geovision to record anything except real movement detected by the camera. This is much better than the rolling, hopping, jumping mess that is analog wireless. Now the only thing that sucks is the price of that Axis product. I'll have to see what else is available. I'll check the other company you mentioned.

    Wireless IP Camera interference question.

That's good news. With analog wireless cameras, the picture gets distorted and bends, rolls, hops, generally scrambled and it looks like an old television set trying to tune in an over the air broadcast with a crummy tv antenna. Can you tell me about how bad the interference has to be before the framerates crawl to a halt on a wireless digital IP camera? This is starting to sound like something I may just have to test out. You see, with wireless analog camera's (signal looks like a tv station that rolls, hops, jumps about etc.), and this hopping can cause a Geovision DVR to record all the time because every frame of video looks completely the opposite as the one before it which triggers the record function. With a wireless IP camera (data stream), if only frames are dropped, this shouldn't cause Geovision to record anything except real movement on a camera because the interference would just slow the frame rate and not trigger the Geovision to record because if there is no movement on the camera, every frame would look identical to the one before it.

    pro and con on WIRELESS!!

Wireless analog would be like a regular television broadcast. Wireless digital would be a stream of data that uses error correction, could be prone to packet sniffing, etc.

    pro and con on WIRELESS!!

Hello WirelessEye. Do you know if wireless IP cameras have the same type of interference as wireless analog cameras? With wireless analog cams, interference causes the video signal to hop and roll and bend, etc. What happens with wireless IP cams? Same thing, or since the stream is digital, do you just drop frames and gain pixelization? Thanks

Thanks. I'll give that a shot.

How to connect TCP/IP source to Geo?

Correct, but in a different way (I hope). I could be wrong about this because I don't currently use any wireless IP camera's, but it is my hope that the interference to a wireless IP camera would just cause a framerate drop in the video signal as error correction would kick in and the interference would not distort the video signal (very similar to how video streams on the internet drop frames when you stream something like the NASA channel, etc.). If the interference is severe, I could see everything becoming blocky and then distort the picture, but with analog wireless, the slightest little blip in interference usually causes ugly random lines to appear in the video signal and the video hops and rolls from here to there and then straightens out, and it is this hopping that causes Geovision detection to go crazy so you get an all days worth of little skips and blips recorded because the video rolling triggers the Geovision no matter how high you have the threshold setting. With analog wireless camera interference, you end up with a scrambled picture. I'm hoping that with an IP camera, you would get a perfect picture with a few dropped frames when there are minimal amounts of wireless interference. Do you know if this is true or not? If not, then I have no use for this product, but if IP camera interference is only dropped frames, and not a scrambled video signal, then I could use it. I think you have used wireless IP before so you tell me. What happens to wireless IP cams when they experience 2.4 gigahertz interference from microwaves, cordless phones, etc.? Do you see distorted scrambled video, or do the frames just drop really low?

How to connect TCP/IP source to Geo?

Damn. This is something I've been looking for (Thanks Rory). But, why does it have to be so expensive? Isn't there a cheaper alternative? I have the same issue on a much smaller scale. I currently have 2 standard analog wireless camera's that I want to replace with IP wireless cameras (mainly so when the interference happens, it won't wreck the video like analog wireless is prone to) but all the wireless IP cameras I have seen usually transmit to a router or some other networking device that doesn't have an analog video converter to allow me to hook into my Geovision card. But $600+ is too much for me to spend. Aren't there any cheap IP cameras that convert to an analog video stream that can be piped into a GV card? Or a competitor to the Axis 292 product?

    Geovision false alert reversal

Does anyone know a good way to minimize the number of false alerts caused by tree shadows with a Geovision card (without using a PIR)? I'm monitoring a yard that has trees everywhere and although I can mask out the trees, I can't mask out the tree shadows as the tree shadows constantly sway in the wind and are all over the lawn that is being monitored, plus, not only do the tree shadows sway in the wind, but they move throughout the yard all day long depending on the suns position in the sky. Is this sort of situation very difficult to obtain accurate alerts with a Geovision system? Or do I just need to enable some options I normally don't use too often like object counting\detection\tracking, etc.?

    Geovision false alert reversal

Do you think that Geovision might someday offer features like IntrusionTrack? http://www.ioimage.com/objects/pdf/flyer.pdf http://www.ioimage.com/objects/pdf/ioTotalTrack.pdf IntrusionTrack™ is an intelligent module that watches with unblinking vigilance for intruders in surveillance video; IntrusionTrack™ doesn’t give intruders a chance. Built-in VTD“ technology detects intruders while ignoring distractions that cause false alarms, like small animals, swaying branches, cloud shadows, rain, snow, etc. Running analysis per pixel at a rapid rate of 30 times per second, it learns and adjusts using algorithms and built in sight-logic all while applying user-defined security policies, further preventing false alarms and saving security personnel from ongoing global sensitivity calibrations such as for growing shadows and light changes.

    Geovision Price Index

Someone needs to start a website, or add a section to this site, that lists the current best prices and locations to purchase Geovision cards from. It could do for Geovision card pricing what Pricewatch.com does for PC pricing. The lowest prices could be more easily found, and the retailers could be rated so as consumers, we would know which online retailers to stay away from and where we can get the best price on Geovision cards. Does anyone know if something like this has been started already or not? If not, I wonder how hard it would be to set up?

Don't let Sarbanes-Oxley hear that... "Security – Information is a growing competitive advantage, as such security is becoming a mission critical need. Without proper security, companies risk losing that competitive advantage and over time will feel the impact of the effects on their bottom line, success and corporate well being. Increased scrutiny and forced inspection are also forcing companies to review the confidentiality of their data in order to address the demands of regulatory compliance, be it Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA, or NCLB. Failure to change could eventually result in heavy financial fines, tarnished reputation or even prison time. By keeping their information in a less secure application such as Access, their data is not properly backed up" http://www.unicom-inc.com/allsegments/services/accesstosqlmigration.cfm

Thing is, I have the GV card in one of my servers that I also occasionally use for testing other services, plus I like the idea of digital video and a VCR is too 80's for me. I'm more into fun stuff like this: http://ts-market.com/products/?action=showGrp&grpId=85 Agreed, but in that very same industry, there are no forum rules that prevent me from finding the best deal on a piece of hardware, like the rules here do. No biggie though, I'm used to it now.

This couldn't be any farther from the truth. I want to spend the time with the hardware, not taking weeks figuring out exactly where I am going to get the hardware from (due to the piracy problem). I also want to help non-dealer users make quick purchasing decisions on a great product (GeoVision), but it seems difficult with the forum rules so I won't bother trying. I'll just have to abide by the rules and like it I guess. I understand that a site dedicated to end users (very few dealers) is probably not going to happen anytime soon because I don't have the time to put into it either (setting up the forum, etc.), so I'll just have to remain silent on my views. Kind of the opposite of freedom of speech. Just kidding. I just wish the site was a little more geared towards the end user, unfortunately it's geared a little bit more for the dealers. No big deal I guess, as the info on this site is still top notch, so I don't mind the scale being tipped slightly.

I guess I would have to disagree with this, coming from an IT point of view. Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I enjoy learning other technologies by getting my hands dirty and digging into them. I enjoy tweaking every setting possible to gain the most performance from any given peice of hardware or software, and my Geovision card is a 50/50 mix of wanting to see what is going on while I am away from my property, etc. , and wanting to learn about and tweak the awesome piece of hardware which is the Geovision DVR card \ software suite. I'm not going to hire a professional to do that because it would take away all of the fun of learning the ins and outs of this awesome piece of hardware. I think there just might not be enough people on the forum yet who enjoy hardware as much as I do. When there are more people like this here, perhaps we will be able to invoke a few tools to help people get the best price \ performance that can be had from the GV series of cards. Currently, with the forum rules in place, this is not possible. No big deal I guess, but I can tell you that it is frustrating. I like to squeeze every performance dollar from a system and part of doing that involves getting the lowest price possible on my equipment, whether it's a new video card \ processor, or a nice fun piece of hardware like the GeoVision card.

I agree about doing more legwork but to a point. With the 15,000 dealers you mention having pirated cards, if I want to research which ones to stay away from, a nice tool would help, otherwise a person could be searching for a very, very long time and wasting more time than they should be. Time that could be used setting up \ tweaking their systems for optimal performance, etc. It's time consuming enough just determining which card to go with, let alone having to determine which of those 15,000 dealers might be selling you a pirated card. I think the users should be able to post prices to get a better understanding of what's available, and a better understanding of what factors to look at so we can determine if a website is carrying pirated goods or not. For instance, I found what I think seems to be a good price on a GV-800-8 right here: [edit by mod - no need to actually post the link, remember we have approved advertisers that sell these items, thanks] Now. I should be able to analyze this site with users on this forum to determine if it is a pirated card or not. I should be able to say that this card is going for $547.95 on this site but it seems a bit low. How can I determine if it is a pirated card or not? I called the website and the person answering the phone told me the card comes with Ver 8.0 of the software and that the card is a v 3.31 hardware revision. Now, how can I determine if the card is legitimate or not (without spending hours on this quest)? There was one other person on this site who posted about the company, but as far as I can tell, the link led to hearsay, or worse yet, a dealer who could want non-dealer users to think the site carries pirated goods so it would be one less site to compete with the dealers on this forum. Do you see how this site doesn't allow a non-dealer to make as informed of a decision as possible because of the posting rule? The Dealers have a Dealer Only section and maybe there should be a section for only Non-Dealers as well but I don't know how it could be setup to lock out the Dealers as they could just impersonate a non-dealer anyway. Anyway, all this piracy is a bit ridiculous. It almost makes me not want to care if I buy a pirated card or not since there is no group looking out for me and my best interests, why should I care if I get a pirated card or not? It sounds like if I did happen to get one, so what, I'd be out less time and money then I would if I researched for days, and days, and days, and days, just to attempt to stay away from a pirated card. If it takes me days and days and weeks and weeks to do the research, hell, I could buy 2 or 3 pirated cards and even if I got screwed over on them, I'd still have come out ahead because I would have saved the weeks of research time which adds up to be way more than the cards themselves. Time is money, and we shouldn't have to waste it on so much research. Hell, I can go to just about any groups of websites and within 1 week know which $30,000 vehicle I want to purchase (very important decision by the way as it comes down to personal safety as well). But if I want to buy a $600 video card, I shouldn't have to put in the same amount of time as I would for a $30,000 vehicle. (and yes one could argue that a $600 card could protect that very same $30,000 vehicle but I don't even want to go there. (A $250 insurance deductable could protect it as well.) Anyway, this is really getting on my nerves. It shouldn't be this time consuming to find the lowest price \ best website to order from. Why is this industry plagued so bad with piracy? It's almost as if it is rotten to the core. I'm disgusted.

    Wireless PIR

Just wondering what a good outdoor wireless PIR recommendation would be? I just need one to put outside in the back yard so when someone comes in the back yard, it will turn on a lamp or any other regular standard electrical device that I have located indoors. This one looks like what I need, but I don't trust X10, never have and probably never will, but perhaps that is just because their cameras are junk? Anyone know if the X10 DM10A wireless PIR is good, or is it just as junky as the X10 cameras? Here is a link: http://www.smarthomeusa.com/Shop/Motion/Motion-Detectors/Item/DM10A/ I've read that Ademco makes some nice wireless PIR's, but do they make any that are comparable to the DM10A that work with just a little $15.00 receiver like the DM10A does? I also have a GeoVision GV-600-8. Which GeoVision option(s) would I need to do something similar, or with the GV-600-8, what option would allow me to turn on camera's based on motion detected from a wireless PIR? Is it one of the GV-IO units? I kind of want to do both things. The X10 device seems like a very reasonable way to just have a light inside the house turn on when motion is detected outside, but I wonder how reliable the DM10A really is. Seems very low priced but I haven't tested it so I don't know. Anyone? Anyway, here is another wireless PIR that does something similar: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BHE4AY/002-1012582-1042456?v=glance&n=172282 It's the Carlon HS3605.

    Geovision 800-8

Can anyone else confirm if defencemeasures.com is really an online reseller that carries pirated Geovision cards or software as the above post would suggest? I have contacted Geovision and I am awaiting their response but I would like to hear from others who have ordered from defencemeasures.com as well just in case the above post has been compromised. The reason I am asking is because they have some really good prices on Geovision cards, but if they are carrying pirated goods, then I would guess the BSA should get involved. Thank You

    gv900-8 channel

I agree completely. It sounds like Geovision's piracy problem is out of control. They need the BSA or some other group to come in and enforce the piracy rules and regulations and start making these online resellers who carry pirated cards accountable for their actions. We need people to report these illegal websites more so they are shut down quicker. How widespread is this problem with Geovision pirated cards? Perhaps if we could start a list on this forum, it might help some of the users here avoid those companies that carry the pirated cards. This is the kind of legwork that could be avoided if we had a good list of pirate sites to stay away from.
