Panasonic WV-sc385 safe operating temperature
LittleScoobyMaster posted a topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Hey guys. From the user manual of the SC385, it states: Do not place the camera in locations where the temperature is not within 14 °F to 122 °F. If I kept this camera indoors on a window sill that gets sun all day, would that be too hot for this camera? It would be in an air conditioned room that doesn't get above 80 °F, but with the sun shining on it all day, I'm not sure how hot the camera would actually become. Behind the camera would be white blinds. So the camera would be between the window glass and the blinds with about 1.75 inch clearance on 2 sides of the camera. The other 2 sides would have a foot of clearance on each side. Also, I would add the smoked dome to go over it as well. Would these conditions be too harsh for this camera? I do have other options, but this is the easiest for me. I tried to find a way to monitor the temp of the camera, but I'm not seeing any settings that show the temp. I would think it should have a way to check the temperature it's running at but it doesn't seem too apparent at the moment. -

WV-SC385 and 940nm IR?
LittleScoobyMaster replied to LittleScoobyMaster's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
I think I know what you mean, but wanted to clarify. I know that for the IR portion I would only want to cover a small close to the house 70x50 foot area, not using the PTZ of the camera to expect IR to go any further than that. I was looking at some ~$500 Raytec illuminators for this camera. If I was only using it for this small 70 x 50 foot area, is it still considered a waste for this camera? Just a little confused as to why it would be a waste. The camera would be indoors facing outside going through a window. The illuminator would be outdoors facing the are to be covered. Or. are you thinking that, in order to do IR with this camera, I should really cover a much larger area, say 300 x 200 feet? In which case I would need to purchase something like an $800 Illuminator (higher priced Raytec). -

I plan to fairly soon. I'm leaning towards Geovision NVR just because I'm familiar with it. -

Good Source for Raymax Illuminators?
LittleScoobyMaster replied to dvarapala's topic in Security Cameras
You should do a Youtube review of them when they are released. I'm hoping to look into the Vario unit reviews this week if many exist yet. I saw at least 1 or 2 but they required a signup on a website I haven't done yet. -
Good Source for Raymax Illuminators?
LittleScoobyMaster replied to dvarapala's topic in Security Cameras
I was reading about those on some sites back when the promo stuff was out. I think Feb of this year is when they were supposed to be released. Anyone here do a review of any Vario units yet? They look spendy with all the features. Too many IR units to choose from. I remember back when the UF500 was the only game in town. Now I don't know what to get to pair up with my SC-385 and possible future 5MP cam. You mention Raytec and the other company being used quite a bit by the pros and Bosch falling by the wayside a bit. Is that really true? I know Rory is more partial to Bosch, but if they are on the way out, I'd rather go with the newer tech. I know Rory likes his Windows XP quite a bit and he'll be using that until 2018. (I was testing Win7 since early beta and would never look back to XP for an OS option but I understand everyone likes what they like). I'm wondering if this is a similar situation with the older IR versus the newer tech IR. A while back you posted that 940nm is not purchased much because it's a premium most people don't need. Are you still finding that to be true? I'm thinking I want to pay the premium but I understand the trade-offs. I just think that IR should be stealthy, and that stealth deserves a premium price. Just curious if you are still noticing the same thing these days with people avoiding 940NM due to the extra cost? This is the quote I was referring to, guess it wasn't you that posted it. Curious what your opinion is for better IR between Bosch and Raytec? From your previous posts I'd say you really like Raytec. Have you in the past used a lot of Bosch units as well for comparison? I'm thinking with the answers to these questions we might have enough material to write a small book, at least a pamphlet. One last thing. What do you think of this MAC Daddy? -

Good thing it's not one of these. I would imagine these could do some permanent damage to some cameras: http://www.wickedlasers.com/lasers/Spyder_III_Pro_Arctic_Series-96-37.html?gclid=CLTr3aHBva8CFbEDQAodvEdExA gJdf9pfS9D0 -

Good Source for Raymax Illuminators?
LittleScoobyMaster replied to dvarapala's topic in Security Cameras
As to Raymax, to be fair my only experience with them was the visible LED, that was disappointing and I would never waste a clients money on that again I cant speak for their Infrared Illuminators. Raytec and Iluminar are the two dominant pro illuminators right now, and for good reason. Most of the people I talk to have moved on from the Bosch units, but if they're working for you, that's great. It would have been helpful for you to share that info 2 pages ago. Does this mean that Bosch is no longer the MAC Daddy? I'm trying to decide who to go with between Raytec and Bosch at the moment. -
Camera bright light bright light
LittleScoobyMaster replied to LittleScoobyMaster's topic in Security Cameras
No. And why would you focus on a light anyway? Verry funny Matt. Not on the light, just in that general direction. Sometimes, I might have an area that includes a couple street lights in the photo. Sometimes neighbots might turn on their yard lights and leave them on all night. Sometimes, the fireflys in my neighborhood linger in large swarms. They give off a ton of light. -

Where to buy concealment devices

Just go to Home Depot and pick up a dumb rock. It's hollow. http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=100598432&storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&MERCH=REC%2d%5f%2dnosearch2%2d4%2d%5f%2dNA%2d%5f%2d100598432%2d%5f%2dN Because it's low to the ground, you might get a lot of upskirt action, but would that really be so bad? I actually own one of these. I use it for covering up an electrical outlet used by a pond, but I've often contemplated the surveillance applications of them as well. At the same time, to be honest, I am also giggling. Perhaps you could use this rock and put a large Comcast sticker on it. The best of both worlds. -

IR Illuminator for the Panasonic WV-SC385 PTZ
LittleScoobyMaster posted a topic in General Digital Discussion
Hello. I recently purchased the Panasonic WV-SC385 PTZ for my home setup. I'm looking for a nice IR illuminator to go with it. It would be used in a back yard that has no light at all (pitch black). Prefer it to be semi-covert (minimal red glow - I forget which wavelength that is, looking it up now). Not sure if it matters, but the SC385 would be indoors and the illuminator would be outdoors. The glass in the window is not tinted. I remember reading about the UF500 back in the day but I'm wondering what today's options look like. The area to be covered is rather large, but not too large. About 60 feet x 50 feet, give or take. Maybe up to 75 x 60 feet at the high end. The target would be wildlife but it would be nice to be able to identify prowlers as well. Also, I've been happy ordering from BHPhoto in the past. I really like their service. I notice they have a nice little selection of IR Illuminators. Would I be limiting myself greatly if I only wanted to purchase one from them, or is their selection more than adequate? They have about 73 total. The price range I am shooting for is in the $400 to $500 range. Preferably less, but I would be willing to hit $500. One of the ones I'm looking at is about $500. It's the Axis T90A21. Lists a 92' range. Is this close to what some people here would recommend? Back in the day I remember VideoAlarm (Extreme CCTV) had the UF500 and it was amazing but always out of my price range. Anyone still use monsters like those? I know Rory probably still does. Rory, what''s your favorite illuminator at the moment? Is it the Bosch EX26? Curious. I know you have a lot of experience with high-powered IR. -
I was wondering how the Geovision GV-NVR software upgrades work. For instance. If I have a 2 License dongle and I wanted to add a 3rd IP camera, how would I go about doing it? Do I somehow transfer the license onto the existing 2 Licenese dongle and then it becomes a 3 license dongle? Or, do I have to keep adding more dongles to the server? (i.e. 1 for the 2 Licenses and another dongle for the 3rd license)

Geovision GV-NVR and Panasonic WV-SC385
LittleScoobyMaster replied to LittleScoobyMaster's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Thanks Pavel. I'll try this now. You are saying that as long as I stay under 4 cameras, the software is free? I'm currently d/ling DS_NVs_installer_7.3.54.zip. It's 640MB. Is that the correct file? -
I get what your saying. But, like I wouldn't stare at a lightbulb for hours on end, or even a pack of bright led lights. It just seems like a bad idea. Same with an IR lightbulb, or pack of IR leds. I just wouldn't purposely do it. If you use a Kinect for hours on end, you are doing just that. On the FDA approval front, it is a very easy task to obtain FDA approval. Just look at all those ridiculous drugs on the market that list harmful side affects of thoughts of depression \ suicide, swollen body parts, passing out, discollered skin, death, etc. It's as if, there really is nobody protecting us from the drug companies. FDA. Sorry, but they are a joke. Everyone has seen the commercials I'm referring to because we still can't understand how the FDA lets those drugs on the market. So, I really don't think any government agency is going to tell us when to stay out of harmful IR. We just have to use our best judgement given the data we have available to us. As for the sun, it's a killer. I think people who sunbath are just not using their heads. Have you ever seen those photos where they take a woman who spent a large portion of her life in the sun, you know, tanning, or working outdoors, then they show the photo of the woman who spent her whole life indoors. The difference is amazing. In case you haven't seen those studies, they have a 60 year old woman who avoids the sun extensively her whole life and she looks like she's in her twenties. They have the 35 year old who lived in sun and she looks like she's in her 70's. Irreversible sun damage being the root cause. Unbeleivable how badly the sun kills us, takes our health away, but yet, people go out and bath in it and even go to tanning salons. Idiots. Anyway, I agree, more research is needed. But in the meantime, luckily we can also choose not to participate in things we think could be harmful. It's all about choice. I stay out of the sun for many reasons, I beleive in UV protection, and I don't look directly at light bulbs, or IR lights. Now, in saying that, I hope that LCD monitors are less harmful, but I would guess they could be as harmful or even moreso, but that is one addiction I can't give up. I also watch tv, but it just feels less harmful than staring directly into a Kinect. And soon we'll have the new TV sets that obey our movements. I'm guessing they will be shining IR on us all day long as well. I haven't looked at the specs yet though. And, the whole Kinect craze is making it's way to desktop PC's and laptops, so, it's going to be everywhere. Sucks, I know.

This leads me to wonder....How safe is the Microsoft Xbox Kinect? It uses IR and blasts you in the face with it, some people use the Kinect for 8 hours straight. Considering my recent experience I can tell you I won't be playing it. The naysayers seem to think if you're not blinded then it's okay. I consider any loss of vision a major, life-changing consequence that should be avoided. 7qLDzLYPG-w lqgNRVNzYmg The day the tech specs for the Kinect were released I had wondered how MS was going to make something so harmful become so common place, but I knew most people would not care about the safety issues and I was correct in my prediction. Staring into a light for hours on end doesn't seem like a great idea, but then again, I guess that's what we do with our display panels. Plants and animals can get by I guess. But I still think MS is careless when it comes to the Kinect. I wonder if there are any studies out about the harmful effects of the Kinect. As for that 'light therapy', that makes no sense to me. Most kinds of light have harmful effects, not beneficial, unless you include vitamin d from the sun. But then again, you have people sitting in suntan beds helping themselves age faster. Remember those dumb***** on Big Brother? (tv show). They would sleep in IR all night for weeks on end. I thought they were stupid for doing that.

GV-NVR (LPR) or GV-LPR madness and fruit loops!
LittleScoobyMaster posted a topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Hello. Kinda new to GV IP cams and I was wondering, what is the difference between GV-NVR (using the LPR feature that comes with this software), compared to the full blown version of GV-LPR? Is GV-LPR the older version that was integrated into GV-NVR or something? Do most nicer IP cams (1280x1024 rez or greater) come with free LPR in the GV-NVR software? Is the GV-LPR software just a more robust version? (Saw somewhere that said it could monitor 4 to 8 lanes of traffic) How about price. Did I read that right, on one website it seemed that GV-LPR was $800 per license, but GV-NVR is only $99 for non-geo IP cams. Can someone clarify? thanks Note: There will be no fruit loops. Sorry about that. Also, here is a photo of my new yak. I just purchased him recently: -
