Newbie with questions about a 4ch system

thanks! wow, 23 pages... Looks like i know what I'm doing after work tonight!
  2. Hello everyone! I'm new here so forgive me if I am posting this in the wrong section! I am trying to setup a system for my mother. She lives in a very good neighborhood, but would like to be able to monitor her front door, side door, and back door just to feel safer. I have no experience with security cameras and came here looking to ask some questions Here is what I am looking for: -I want her to be able to look at the monitor and be able to tell who is at the door before she opens it -The picture quality should be good enough to see clearly at night, anything within 20-25ft of the cameras -Would be nice if the cameras are viewable via a cell phone app (for me to check from time to time, or monitor when not at home) -I'm hoping for something that is somewhat simple to setup and use, I love doing everything myself, and I'm pretty sure i can install a system. -My budget is $650-$700 The system I am looking at, is from Q-see. 4CH NVR with 4 HD 720p IP cameras. It is on sale at Costco for $699. http://www.costco.com/Q-See-4-Channel-HD-Digital-NVR-with-1TB-Hard-Drive-and-4-HD-720p-IP-Cameras.product.100003211.html What are everyones opinions about this system? I know you guys might say that it isnt expandable to 8CH if we wanted to in the future, but for her needs 4CH is more than enough. From what i understand, this system includes everything I need, except a monitor. So i connect the cameras to the NVR via the POE cables, hook up the NVR to a monitor via HDMI and connect it to my router for internet access? Does it need a permanent computer connection or something? I'm hoping it doesnt need a computer and can run separatly. Thank you!!
