    Cable for Internet connection

I see the OP has already bought something but wanted to bring it up as this may be a cheap solution for people in the future and should work better than power line products. Search out DECA which is what Directv uses to put your system onto the internet at your house. There are a few different deca adapters but the best one will probably be the one they refer to as "broadband deca" (p/n: DECABB1R0) because it uses a simpler wall wart power supply. This is a small device that looks like a cable modem and all it does is use a large block of frequency that puts the network onto the cable line. Now this product will not work if you are trying to simultaneously use cable tv or off air signal as it uses frequencies that will be in conflict (in those cases you want a product called MOCA but is way more expensive). Now you could use it while that same cable was using Directv SWM technology. There are many of these available at the best price on ebay as a lot of these that ended up not being needed for installs go on there for 50-75% off retail. You will need a pair of them in most cases but it would be possible to just use one at your router if for example you were going to re-purpose multiple coax lines. Here is an example: http://www.solidsignal.com/pview.asp?p=decabb1r0&d=directv-cinema-connection-kit-%28decabb1r0%29
  2. Almost every software based NVR solution calls for Intel. Talking non enterprise level software, like a core package or middle tiered package. This would be for a residential or small business sized system, less than 10 MP cams. For a PC that was going to be used as the client and server have you found any solutions that dont work well with Athlon based systems? Seems computer parts from the last few years should be well ahead of the recommended requirements for a PC for this purpose. I know there are a lot more factors to consider, just want to know other than large scale or hardcore analytics when would an athlon pc be no good. Thanks
  3. Dont have a specific system laid out but wanting to get back to some clients and maybe some new ones that are wanting to migrate into IP. Looking at a vendor who seems to sell decent name branded cameras. I loath the no name chinese stuff that plagues this industry so will be sticking with known good brands. Going to be getting some IP cams to work with before I started to fool with some trial NVR software. Will start with manufacturer free software but then onto ones like: Exacq, Geovision, Milestone etc.. Was wondering if "basic" versions of Aimetis and Aviglon would be too complex for residential or small business where the users may not be tech savvy. You are a vendor in Aviglon can you send me pricing? Thanks
  4. Thanks for the reply, and also thanks for your blog, those type of in depth reviews are greatly lacking for this type of gear. Just realized now I put Athlon instead of AMD I guess what I am really asking is it worth saving $100-150 going with an AMD chip when building a NVR pc where the system is not CPU intense. I know in the case of building a PC for architectural software the answer would be no because it is very CPU intensive and an i7-3770k is worth it. Or has anyone run into software that just doenst play well with AMD.

What test monitor do you use?

I do more CATV than CCTV and have used 13" crts for this for years. About 2 years ago for $65 I got a 7" Viore: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16889532005 I expected to have to replace it every year or so but it is still running just fine with decent battery life. For CATV work the tuning is poor but most of the time this is not an issue. For navigating menus or using the video feed of a camera it works quite well. Great thing is with these that charge off of a 12vdc wall wart you can tie a lead in your truck so it can charge while driving to a site.
