    "true day/night", what is it?

Just a correction, that 0.005 is really 0.05, they exaggerate allot on the lux levels these days, they fail to explain that is faceplate which means little. And while the DFL is a nice dome for the cost, it cant see anything in low light, that being at approx 0.5 lux.

Bingo .. thats the bottom line.

    "true day/night", what is it?

1-Digital Day Night Camera - no IR cut filter, switches between Color and BW mode without any moving parts, also known as a Color IR Camera if it has built in Infrared, a less expensive way to do it, trade off can be washed out colors. 2-True Day Night Camera - Has an removable IR cut filter, switches to Color mode and the IR Cut filter is placed over the chip to block out any Infrared (particularly useful in outdoor situations where there is alot of bush and trees), Switches to BW mode and the IR cut filter is removed. Moving parts, better color image during the day, however more chance of failure if it switches too much. If its a Day Night camera it is either #1 or #2 #2 costs more due to the extra feature but its generally a better camera, a better overall image.
  4. Did you enable DirectX on the settings for the Virtual Machine? DirectX in VMware and Virtual box are basically hacked to work, if you did a DirectX check it will tell you the files are invalid or corrupt and DirectX is not working properly. If you do not use these custom versions of DirectX then Direct3D wont work properly, pretty much anything that does any intensive video work wont work properly. Though even with the custom versions it is not that great. This is one of the drawbacks to using a Virtual world. Therefore, if using the custom DirectX files some video software may look at this and notice there is what seems like a problem with directX, in some cases a popup message will occur, normally they will ignore it, perhaps in your case either the software sees this and just wont work properly, or you didnt enable the VMware directX and then it wont even work - note I am not an expert in DirectX so I cant really answer it completely, just going by my experience with it. Ive had the error messages but it still works, but thats with DirectX enabled for the Virtual Machine. I just wrote another program to terminate the error message when it pops up and then the video loads fine, but that was a different DVR software. Ive used other DVR remote software that gave no error message at all and just worked. That said, it could just be a codec or resolution issue. Make sure you have the video drivers installed correctly. You could also try Virtual Box as I actually found that worked better for me. But either way you need to make sure DirectX is enabled. Its been a while so I cant say for certain but you may need to reinstall the Virtual Drivers to have that option, at least with Virtual Box.
  5. You can also try WINE, though its touch and go on a Mac, depends on the software and also can take a while to get even the most basic software to work properly sometimes. Also see this: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=19615

As long as it has a removable IR cut filter then its a True Day Night, also labeled as TDN and ICR. It doesnt always have Infrared built in such as with non IR Domes and Box cameras.

    DVR resolution

i typically use VGA anyway ... 640x480, cuts down on the image size alot on a Geovision, and less overhead for the PC, without any great noticeable loss in overall quality.

    DVR resolution

D1 is a Resolution Standard, in NTSC systems it is 720x480 and in a PAL system it is 720x576. These resolutions come from Rec. 601 and are also used in DVD-Video and Standard-definition television. You will also now see it listed as 704x, something about 8 pixels on each side not containing any useful information so they crop it to save bandwidth.
  9. it might be a deterrent to basic inhouse theft .. but the real criminals dont check at least down here .. they will go right up to the camera and laugh at it before they stab or shoot or just rob someone.

    video evidence

it really depends on the application and location. I know people recording at 1fps in highest quality and its fine, they have used it for evidence for the courts before. Personally I prefer the fastest and highest quality I can get. Some DVRs will use a smart motion feature where it adjusts the frames based on how many cameras are detecting motion, so for example if the card is 120fps and only 4 cameras are detecting motion, then it will record at 30fps each of those 4 channels.
  11. Anyone know where to download some of their DVR software? I had to replace a drive in a bad system and netpromax dont reply to emails. Also any idea if there are any other network client software that works with them? Ive been searching, even on Comarts site, but nothing is the same so far. Thanks

    Slight Distortion in Video Feed

and dont use the eclipse cat5 products. also like mentioned did you try another camera?
  13. It might be because you are using Win7, try to run the software in XP Compatibility mode. Either way the drivers might not work properly with that OS as they werent made for it, I seem to recall it was originally for Win 2000? Also if your OS is 64 bit then might as well forget it, it probably just wont work. If you remove the camera from the input does it say video loss or other, could it just be a codec issue? Your best bet is maybe to try and get XP on a dual boot setup.
  14. Nothing new, GE had them for years, Panasonic have them. The ones Ive used get really hot and also dont quite have as good an image. May as well just get a dome.

1st post - advice wanted for home setup

What about the terrible image quality from Avtech over the network? Ive used tons of DVRs including many cheap ones and this brand has the worse quality ive ever seen. I have one myself actually, but I got it free, I would never pay for it, many others in the same price range with much better quality. And to Avtech, if you want to get good reviews then do something about your network video, you are years behind.
  16. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8533&start=0 As its not a common card, unless someone that comes around knows it and its software, you might want to contact Wave-p if they are still in business.
  17. Welcome to the forum. However it is not MY forum, I am just a moderator here, and I dont make the rules. Nobody here ever mentioned it is illegal to look on Ebay. Why is ANYTHING pirated? Because the criminals want to make money from others hard work. Sure we would like to buy cheaper cards, I have customers also, and they cant afford things like Geovision most of the time. But hey, there are other brands that ARE cheaper, just buy them instead. You wont find the features of say Geovision, but then if you want all those additional features, surely you will pay for it, right? Software takes alot of time to develop and test properly, you pay for that time. Incorrect - you can also buy the original card, but it will only come with an SDK and then you will have to develop your own software for it. Check out Comart and UDP Tech for example. Ofcourse one needs to have a company and they tend to only sell in bulk, but check out Avermedia and others for basic capture cards that can use 3rd party software. Once again, you are paying for the software. If you were to go from the bottom up and start with the most basic free AMCAP type software, then goto some $20 software, then go up and up until you reach the cost of something like Vigil or Geovision or Video Insight, you will know the difference is huge. The comparison is close enough, Geovision for example IS selling software, they ARE software developers. Perhaps MS dont sell hardware and software in one package, but that doesnt mean they dont have major shares in most of the big name hardware companies, such as Intel. However, CCTV is nowhere on the same level as the sales that MS gets, and my comparison was geared towards the hacking and cracking of the software versus the business model. As mentioned before, there are cheaper systems. The people that clone and sell those more expensive systems ARE the crooks, they are advertising Geovision, Kodicom, etc, cards, but those are not the actual cards, the drivers have been hacked, and the software is older versions. Basically they know the names are big, they realize they can get over on some people and those people will "think" those are the actual cards and latest software. They are ripping off the consumer and the manufacturers and the software developers of the real product. The same people sell cheaper cards with no name and their own software, do why not buy that instead? Because you want the Geovision name? Then buy the real thing. As mentioned one is paying for the software. These pirates not only make cheap copies of the hardware, they copy the software, modify it, and sell it as the real thing. They are criminals and anyone that supports them knowing this are essentially criminals also. So lets recap, if one wants to buy Geovision and others like it, then buy the real thing, if one does not and they end up with problems, dont come here looking for help, we cant help, the problems are beyond anything we can do, it is hacked and cracked and goodness knows what else, so one is on their own then. Additionally due to copyright and anti piracy laws the forum cannot allow those type of posts. If one cannot afford the real thing, then simply look at something that costs less, but ofcourse that is legit. There are many out there, for example CNB have cards for much less, made in Korea, there are cards on sites like BlueCherry, there are TONS of sources out there. But people buy the cloned systems because in general they are big names and they think they are getting the same thing as if they bought the real one, when infact they are not.

    Painting CNB

What about the cans of plastic paint .. hobby stuff? Ive used that in the past to paint the light fixtures in my jeep and it dries really quick and comes out nice.
  19. is there DSL in the area? If so wouldnt you be able to just use any 12VDC IP camera and any 12VDC DSL modem? http://www.netgear.com/products/home/wired-routers-and-modems/wired-modems/DM111P.aspx just cut the adapter and connect that to the 12VDC source. make sure it provides enough AMPs. You can join them anyway you like, beanies, butt splice connectors, terminal strips, tape, whatever .. r adio shack sells everything you need. Eg. and as mentioned altronix has power products that could help also.
  20. Apache? have you ever used Xampp? I got a client who had some indians (in India) do a website for his business and they put the servers on the local computers at his stores .. php using Xampp with Apache .. I tested a portable USB version of it and could change the ports easily using a VBScript I wrote .. but at the locations with the server installed and with services installed, I changed the ports the same way but it still never took, even after stopping appache and xampp and removing the services and restarting ... any ideas? I just changed the ports in the httpd.conf file under appache, is there somewhere else it needs to be changed for the services? And I know I shouldnt but LOL @ this thread topic ... Personally I would tell the landlord I know and do not approve of it, it may even be a crime so report it to law enforcement, short of that if you destroy someone elses property it will only cost more in the end. Maybe just move out?

    How to choose DVR

Yeah but most of us wont be checking the manufacturers website to see what chip they use, if they even provide that info, which most dont. If we wanted to know the chip then we would also want to know which OS or RTOS they use, and which CPU they have.
  22. A couple days, its possible but rare. I know some DVRs where it was limited hard drive space and continuous record on D1 getting about that ... but most will have at least 7+ days, normally alot more these days. 1 year later, never seen anyone storing for that long.

    How to choose DVR

only place i have used cif, when using a DVR that gives you the choice of CIF or VGA or D1, is in a tiny office inside a building surrounded by rooms with other cameras, or a staff kitchen . etc. small areas and not high priority. In most other cases its always at least VGA, or D1 if they have a large HDD.

.vsr file format / conversion tool

yeah ive recorded with the loop through and it is good also, but any kind of backup using network software is awful quality.
