    How to choose DVR

One of the main things I look at these days is how it works over the internet. Many stand alone DVRs for example are slow and dont have the option to change the codecs or lower the quality for slower connections, also many stand alone DVRs dont have separate streams for the network and it depends on the local DVR settings. I also look for D1 recording on ALL channels but really on budget 4 channel DVRs thats next to impossible to find these days. The speed of the local recording is not quite as important to me, however the playback must be functional and have good evidence sharing, another thing lacking in most stand alone DVRs.

I have Video Server and an AvTech and the player I have can save the recorded video as AVIs. But it is very bad quality so I really dont even bother anymore Do you get an error when you try to save them as AVI?

    Private or Public Static IP

We dont even have 3G properly implemented here yet. In fact DSL is also useless here for remote video, regular is bout 128k upload.
  5. from looking online they dont look that expensive, am i missing something? A good cordless hammer drill for example costs over $600 here.

    Sony EFFIO

Any sample images or videos from the cameras with this chip? Whats the advantage of this chip and will the cameras using it be expensive?
  7. spent several years here hammer drilling through old 2 foot thick concrete walls as so many of them on this island .. get a good hammer drill and long bit .. or pay someone else to do it I used a milwaukee cordless hammer drill for most of the time until the chuck finally got corroded (i live by the ocean) but it lasted years and took a real beating also was quick charge and so I had a couple batteries. But most really thick walls like that I just used a wired hammer drill, dewalt I think it was. You should be able to pick the drills and a long bit up from a decent hardware store.

    GV-650 vs GV-800

Cant really until you buy them and get them in your hands. Typically though clones dont have the latest software, which is why I mentioned 2nd hand, stolen or a scam - although it might not even come with 8.3.4, the picture is probably not even what they look like either. Clones typically have a photocopied leaflet of the instructions for the card, and a blank cardboard box, not the nice "pretty" one by Geovision. Also they would have a regular DVD or CD, with a standard white label anyone can buy in the store and print out the software type on it. At least thats the ones Ive seen photos of before, someone here even bought one from a US distributor not knowing it was a clone until I told them, needless to say it never worked properly and eventually went in the trash. Unless that seller just bought a load of them and is loosing on the sale just to get them off their hands, I just dont see how they can be brand new for that cost. Surely the authorized distributors dont have a $400-$500+ markup on their cards which is the approx diff between this price and theirs .. least I hope not But basically in the Geovision crowd we know most cards on Ebay are clones. Even Geo themselves make a note of that on their anti-piracy page. Some hong kong resellers come on the forum and post their links to their site (which are removed) which have these Geovision clone cards .. its the standard going price for a clone GV-800-16. Also that seems like its not a store selling it, but rather just a person? Hey if even remotely thought they were legit cards I would buy 10 of them right now I dont even need the warranty .. not down here.
  9. Need more info, do you know exactly what type and model of DVR it is?
  10. Have you tried the default passwords yet?

    GV-650 vs GV-800

Average cost of a GV-800-16 at dealer cost is over $600. There is absolutely no way that card is a brand new GV-800-16 card, or at least legit. Also if you buy from Ebay you get no Geovision manufacturer warranty. I mentioned CNB as an alternative as they have legit cards with non hacked software and drivers for the same price as that listing, which cards are the same specs, 120-120 16 channels. The DVR card comes with pigtails for the BNC, each pigtail has 8 channels.

    GV-650 vs GV-800

Simple, its flea bay so its either fake, stolen, or used. Id lean towards fake with hacked drivers, software on white labelled optical disk, and photocopied booklet. Considering though it claims it comes with 8.3.4 it is more likely to be a scam. If you really want to take a gamble, please try the CNB 16 channel card for us, its about the same price at a legit online store, and same specs as the GV-800. Ive used the CNB remote video CMS and it is good, so I was hoping their DVR card would at least be stable, no need for Geovision features for most clients. Id rather someone in the US try it first though as it takes longer and more money to get it shipped down to here.
  13. Ive used IR bullets with split glass and still you get reflection, but from rain drops, bugs etc. I guess some IR could leak through the glass even with the foam ring But ive never experienced that and I deal with IR bullets, the cheap ones also, all the time.

No video, but camera leds are on?

Oh well Guess the other 2 cameras were just lucky, it happens. Also some cameras have some basic power protection built in.

No video, but camera leds are on?

Most Distributed Power Supplies have individually protected outputs, so basically if one goes the others do not.

No video, but camera leds are on?

Need to start with the basics: 1-What cable are you using? 2-What power supply are you using? 3-What connectors are you using? 4-Max cable run in feet? 5-What type of DVR? Next .. 1-Have you tested the camera by itself? Plugged direct into a monitor and on its own power supply. 2-Checked the cable to make sure it is good? Meter it, visibly check it for issues. 3-Tried another camera? 4-Did all this without it going into the DVR? 5-Tried new connectors, redo the video connection? Many things can cause no video, ive even had bad pigtails do it, or just a bad card where one channel was no go, some driver/firmware issue. The most basic is the connection. the other day I went to a job that had no video, but the IR was on. I connected another camera using the connection that existed, still no video. I redid all the connections, cleaned them up, still no video at the DVR end. I cut all the old connectors off which were even inside a weatherproof gang box (corroded box though), and just spliced power and video together (wasnt spending a couple hours in traffic to go buy good connectors for an old crappy camera). Anyway, it worked. Again the other day, another job, no video. Cable looked visibly fine, redid the connections completely, figured camera was dead as it was covered in radiator fluid and who knows what else, was replacing it anyway as the client had bought another already, so didnt even waste anytime on that old camera, just yucked it down and replaced it. NO video still. Power was good, but what must have happened was one of the original staples they had used must have gone through the video side at one point where we could not see, and corroded that. Changed the cable, worked right away. Many times it is power related, or just redoing the connections.

    not seeing cameras

edit the user settings, make sure those 3 cameras have been checked for that user in live view - in other words sounds like they have been set as covert, which means they will still record, just cant view them live.

  22. would like to get other ideas on how others are connecting the power. this is an indoor ceiling mount dome. -It comes with a female power connector on the end of the short cable from the camera. -It comes with a male power connector with bare leads, black and red. 1-connect the 2 power connectors together then connect the bare leads to the siamese power cable - using inline connectors, terminal strips/blocks, beanies, tape, other? Do you tape the 2 connectors so if pulled less chance they come apart? Obviously in a drop tile situation the connectors pulling appart is less likely to be an issue, but in the case of sheet rock or wooden ceilings which are more difficult to access later on this could be a problem waiting to happen, at least if someone such as an AC tech or Electrician goes up there. 2-cut the female power connector off the camera cable and join the ground and positive to the siamese power cable - could be difficult to use inline connectors or terminal strips/blocks as the ground is the outer braid which is lower down from the positive, and they are both thin braid. Use beanies, tape, other? this could apply to other cameras with similar power connections, such as bullet cameras and other cheap domes. I know for example Soundy has had some interesting ideas in the past for certain things, such as using wall plugs with a screw through it to mount an indoor ceiling dome to a drop tile. All ideas welcome and up for discussion.
  23. don't forget to solder that b#$& Playa hayter .. Shrink tubing though .. yeah I think thats a bit much for a cheap camera install like this ..
  24. Ok thanks guys I just used Beanies (b connectors) i managed to get from the local alarm store here .. so used that on the power connector that came with it, taped together as mentioned (pulling back out of hole in wooden ceiling can come loose otherwise), couple screws and good to go. These are very simple to install .. fully focused, easy to adjust, and only takes a penny or small straight screwdriver or even a key, to snap off the dome cover and it just snaps back in place. They still cant handle backlighting much more than any other cheap camera, nor do they see anything worth mentioning in low light, but gotta love them for the price! Best cheap color dome ive used yet.
