  1. Most of the DVR cards have 30fps versions. In the case of GeoVision and 4 channels it is the GV-600-4
  2. i Guess i kind of have to go back on what I said, although you ARE paying for the software, they also charge more per channel and per FPS, so although the difference between the cards arent typically that much, the software developer has you tied down to their pricing scheme, its similar to licencing for Windows and other software, such as per PC. So that said .. you would find the 4 channel 30fps versions very inexpensive. For an 8 channel, you should be able to get away with 60fps versions, for a home user. With those you can also use Smart Motion Detection to get faster recording on active cameras.
  3. Just to clarify, the Combo cards are the cards such as the 1120, 1240 and 1480, so no additional card is required for those, they come with the Video output. The other cards such as the 600-800 dont have that output.
  4. With DVR cards you are working with their software only, in most cases. Basically, they are typically just Software Developers, and they buy their cards from card manufacturers, the card manufacturers normally just provide SDKs only and their primary business is making cards. So although the actual card itself could be very inexpensive, you are essentially paying for the software. Like they say, you get what you pay for, same goes for Software. Not all cards will have a video out, in the case of GeoVision you would need their combo cards to get that. I believe all the Avermedia cards have a video output. No idea about the others, but it should say whether it has it or not. Typically it will be an RCA composite output.
  5. Perhaps, I have seen car headlights cause day night cameras to switch to color as they pass. What type of camera is it?
  6. When did you autoback focus? At dusk when switching modes, or when it was dark? It may perform better at dusk. Also, one nice feature of the Pana is the ability to set day and night focus presets, so you might try that as well once you are happy with the focus. Best, Christopher Neither, I test in a controlled environment. Either way the image was bad. Something had to be wrong with the camera, Ive used the Pano before and It worked fine, never used that Autoback focus though, but even the Manual Backfocus did nothing.
  7. What kind of environment is the DVR going to be placed in, such as dusty or not, heat or not, etc. That can determine which type of DVR you use also. For example, simple 4 channel stand alone DVRs can be much more appropriate for hot dusty applications as it can typically stand up better to those harsh environments. Is the user computer literate? You are correct though about Stand Alone non PC DVRs, unless one spends thousands in some cases, one will not get the features found in some PC based DVR systems. Re: the IP cameras. PC DVRs like GeoVision and Nuuo (and others) will work with IP cameras but typically you need to purchase a licence per camera basis (eg. 2 cameras, 4 cameras, etc). with geovision if you use their IP cameras I believe there is no extra charge.
  8. Hi, its Sunday night .. give them time GeoVision is a card you can pretty much buy anywhere, great for DIY. Another one to look at is Nuuo, though I cant say as I havent used them yet. Software looks okay, but ive only tested it without video. Others are Video Insight, Avemedia, Vigil, and there are other cards but not much talk about them on this forum, doesnt mean they arent good .. just not as popular with the visitors here. I think this sub forum might be more geared towards the much cheaper cards though, like the $50-$100 ones found on New Egg. Im not 100% sure about that though, its a new sub forum.
  9. I found these guys the other day, after following a programmer's link from his bio, i was looking at some facial recognition source code. .. interesting stuff if one has the time to play with it. http://www.ayonix.com

    problems with cat5e

I just checked a local electrical store the other day, first time ive found one here that sells RG59 Siamese (they dont sell RG59 itself), and they want 40 cents a foot. Use to have to bring it in and it would end up around $500 for a 1000' roll after shipping and Customs Duty. Cat5 no idea, other then short pieces I havent had to buy any boxes in years, I leave that to the electrician and they bill seperately, but the short pieces can be $25 for just 15'. RG59 is more common here for CCTV, in addition to the fact that we would have to order any baluns we need and if they come bad or suck it takes weeks to get some more, as nobody sells them here. But, I can get BNCs from a number of places here. And ofcourse BNCs are cheaper. Sorry I dont know what that all is in metres.

    losing static IP

Are you using a router? If so either someone is resetting it, or its a bad router. If you mean the settings in the DVR, then that is where the problem is, and then we need to know what type of DVR it is.
  12. The camera is staying in color, that is the first problem. You need to see why it is not switching to a BW or at least some form of IR sensitive night mode. If the camera uses a photocell to switch check that, cover it with something black to totally dark it out and see if it switches out of color mode. If it uses some kind of digital night mode then check the cameras settings, make sure night mode or day night is enabled.

or he can even just run 18awg wire for the power, like lamp cord wire which is cheap.
  14. Looking for ideas from those that already use larger monitors like this. Someone emailed me asking which is the best, clearest, 32" LCD for Geovision 8.32. I dont think we want to use ClearType, so would be looking for crisp native resolutions supported by Geovision, if they exist in the following: 1920 x 1200, 1680 x 1050, 1600 x 1200, 1280 x 800, 1440 x 900 and 1920 x 1080 They will be purchasing online. Thanks a bunch. Rory
  15. oh yeah, if you want a very small dome: tiny little thing .. not the best image, but small. http://www.eclipsecctv.com/ECL-555_dome_camera.html
  16. Cant speak for the audio, only one ive used with CCTV is louroe, but its hardly stereo quality - somewhat covert though, and oh yeah expensive. http://www.louroe.com/mics.asp?model=amic As for covert cameras, you could by the mini cube cameras that KT&C make and create your own covert cameras, using anything you can think of. double stick or glue them inside the thing you want to make covert, thats pretty much all the others do anyway. Get Pinhole lenses. It is much cheaper and you get to use the existing environment, things that are already there and blend in.

What cameras were they? I know from experience you cant run EX82 cameras (Extreme CCTV/Bosch) power over Cat5, at least not at 50'+, but those are dual cameras with powerful IR and an extreme current draw.
  18. Hi, I know nothing about cell phones though, I dont use one myself anymore. But there was enough issues trying to get certain models to work properly just within a web browser in Windows, I doubt you will be able to access it from a cell, unless: 1-they now have special cell phone software for it. 2-you create your own software. re; 2: I imagine you can only view still images on the cell right? Forget Wavereader, that is a Windows app. If you had Mac or Linux then yeah you could use Wine and maybe it will work but ... one way around it is this, run the activeX on a server which saves a snapshot of the video every x amount of seconds. That server needs to be an actual web server though so you can connect to it, if you have XP Pro installed then you can set it up as an IIS server, for example, or there are other free webservers available on the web. You simply share the folder where the images are, name them 1.jpg for camera 1, etc. then access them that way. You could even write a script that is the webpage, eg. cams.asp and that could grab the images from any folder on the servers PC depending on the querystring you send it. To refresh the images you could also just add a meta refresh into the page's header for basic refresh or try some of the axis javascript refresh samples out there on the web. Just examples ...
  19. My updated app .. a work in progress ... just the GUI is in working order at this time, and still working on that. This is for remote live video only, has scanning (sequencing) and drag drop in all windows and views, multiple fixed and custom views and windows, can drag app around desktop, full screen, skins, and more.

    Google Sucks

Yep it is getting worse. Many spammers setting up websites, not providing any useful info just links to or text scraped from other sites, in some cases without the links. I dont search much now as its gotten so bad. The good old search engines from before google's time, provided better results.
  21. Since his OS drive is H:, im going to take a wild guess that his PC has SD card slots? If so, quickest solution is to get the fastest cheapest SD or SDHC card you can get your hands on, put that in and change its drive letter to C: THEN, lets hope the software "developers" did not hard code in the Windows directory!
  22. true that, and to the OP, if not ready for it, just run cat5 now and use DVRs and Baluns, and do IP later when you are. Things will change over time anyway, IP video systems and cameras will obviously get better, and cheaper. You dont have to do it all at once if you dont want to, dont just jump on it and expect one install to do everything you want, because no amount of money in the world can get you what you want, until you know what you want, and that wont be until you have already used some kind of system at the location and seen where the flaws might be and or where you want to add or move this camera etc to. We can plan all day and night going by experience from other applications or what looks good on paper, but only you will know exactly what you want to see. Additionally the lighting situations will also play a big part in possible restructuring of the cameras and their lighting over time, even moreso if that has not been looked at properly in the beginning.

Can no longer access remotely [SOLVED]

It wont typically be part of the Geo software. If you are on a Router, connect to that using the Browser from the DVR or another PC on the local Network, and change the IP info in there. Otherwise if your DVR is connected direct to the Internet such as plugged into a Cable Modem then you would change the info in the Network Connections section in the control panel. Need some more info to determine what has been done already and how you are setup.
