Can Linux DVR on network invite virus to crash pc?
rory replied to jets's topic in Computers/Networking
LOL. No ... they either installed some free software on their computer or they were visiting porn or casino sites. Sounds like a browser hijacker, using IE. -
Oh yeah I forgot to add, it will be free. Not sure how yet but will add some ads in it .. will see .. i aim to make it free but I still need to make some money to live off while creating it .. people that paid for the old version will get first priority and it is carried over.

Why can't everything work on both PC and MAC! ARGH
rory replied to 3RDIGLBL's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Im a neat freak also, I use the quick launch more then anything. Im a speed freak more then anything, that is where XP shines. Yes alot of apps do like to do that on Windows .. its the darn programmers though .. shoot them in the leg with a BB bullet please .. I also hate apps placed on start up, unless I select them to be. Actually on Ubuntu there are alot of things on Startup .. just not as easy to see. I went through all that and stripped that bugger right down. I think with Mac, they are also there, you just dont see it. If a program opens really fast when you click on it .. it might already be open! Oh yeah .. in Windows just use Msconfig to turn off, if its a service then use the admin tools in the control panel and services, and if device use hardware devices and view hidden ... last resort is the registry .. im a king in there But yes it is very simple to remove them from startup in Windows .. remember Windows is the OS of ease .. least XP anyway! Oh yeah, rest assured Apple's software is already running in the background on the Mac BTW, Im running Ubuntu on the netbook now just because I love the desktop Cube and wiggly windows so much .. for show if anything .. yes I am amazed they actually run on this 673mhz CPU computer with no noticeable lag!! -
Thats like saying dont cook, just buy frozen food Thanks though, I will check it out.

I believe they have something called a Health Server or something, that either comes on the CD or you can purchase it separately. I wrote an app a couple years ago that checked a list of DVRs every X amount of minutes and sounded a siren and updated the log if it could not connect, was going to go for email on errors also, but there was a power outage while I had it opened and i lost everything .. ofcourse I learned from that mistake, lost 2 weeks of code and had no other backup anywhere, but it wont happen again. Unfortunately I dont have the app due to the loss of code but something like that is not difficult to write in VB. EDIT; I do have some of the code as I had a backup from the beginning of development but lost the real working code. I was going to rewrite it but just didnt have any need to, as I dont really monitor a bunch of DVRs. Rory

I recently went from XP to Ubuntu and then to the latest Mac and I find the Mac an extremely limited OS, hands down if I were ever to move away from Windows it would be to Ubuntu over Mac. I would guesstimate that apps for Windows would run more in the billions or trillions, not 194,727. I mean my apps alone you probably wont even find on that tracker. The reason there are no malware made for mac, is mostly because the malware developers (probably mostly kids LOL) are not going to make the move to learn Objective C, and buy the Mac. And as for stability, with Wine and testing other Non mac apps, I had the latest and greatest leopard crashing non stop, so it does have vulnerabilities Basically Windows (at least XP, Im no Vista or 7 fan) gives you ultimate control for an OS with the most applications to run on it, and hardware to support it. I must say Ubuntu gives you even somewhat more control over the OS but it has more issues with Drivers and Installing your favorite software. Im sorry to say but using the Mac OS was like using Pocket PC from 10 years ago. to each their own though .. i have a friend that wont use anything but a Mac, he also bought into the hype about Windows being unsecure - though by default it can be which is why it requires some minimal tweaks, and also loaded down with junk from Dell and HP would turn most users away from it. Mac has potential but it has quite a way to go yet IMO. I want to see it go somewhere though, they need to give us more control. I dont want it to look how the guys at apple want it to look - I cant stand that silly dock for one thing. give me the taskbar at the bottom, how bout that? I mean there are a ton of things but thats just a couple that teed me off. Maybe Im missing something but i spent days searching for Mac admin stuff ... not much out there, and according to the mac admins, not much can be changed. Im looking to learn a new language, but you know, I will learn one that works on Linux AND Windows before I learn one that works on Mac, just makes more sense, more users and it is free. Objective C and all the Mac programming languages require you to actually have Mac installed - give us Virtual Mac for developers to run inside Windows then ... then perhaps. That said, Windows Vista and now Windows 7, put me off Windows for future applications. As long as XP works I will use it ... its a great OS, I mean I have it on the 673Mhz clocked netbook booting to the desktop in 10 seconds and running my remote video apps and every other app I throw at it. -

Yep, 2 develop iphone apps one needs to do it on a Mac. That kills it for most Developers -
No I dont have it. But i would give them more then just a couple days.

Well in XP you goto users and select to use the Welcome screen, that gets rid of the old NT login box. if It is more then one user, then select your user account as the default login, you can goto the registry and do it, or use tweakui. Registry it will be under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon See this for the info on that. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315231 Not sure if this is the problem you are having. If you can explain it a little better maybe we can help. If its not remembering the settings, then thats normally something else. What type of netbook, was it a default OS install or custom? If its running some kind of RAM DISK then when the system restarts whatever is in that will be lost. Not sure if they have it setup like that. Or you are in Guest mode? If you are a user, not sure if Vista will allow those settings to be saved?

Strange internet problems, even for a seasoned tech
rory replied to bpzle's topic in Computers/Networking
Im not familiar with avermedia PC DVRs but instead of ping, telnet to the ports, if that works then you know the http server ports are at least open and functioning. If local telnet works from another PC on the local network, but remote telnet does not, then its a router issue. Other then that could mean a problem with the software itself. do they use the PC for anything else? check the hard drive for bad sectors, file corruption or malware. -
Last I checked it was free. Just contact Avermedia direct. I had it a year and a half ago but I didnt go any further with it and deleted it as it was so unstable. Might be better now though.

Not Much Action Here about NUUO
rory replied to 3RDIGLBL's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
I havent had the funds or time to order one to test ... would like to one day though, for a DVR at least. Would be good if the DVR card manufacturers could make demo software for us .. like an actual demo of the GUI but ofcourse without live video .. -

Makes sense... I guess will see what ideas Larry has in regards to this. -
LOL. thats a bit too old .. 8.12 works great, super fast even on a celeron. Point being, would be nice to build a small PC and keep it inexpensive, but to do so would tend to require something like a celeron and less memory than 8.3 likes. Also, I see no improvement in the video quality, if anything it has worsened, perhaps due to more compression.

A couple issues I have found: 1-links dont open in a new window, so it takes you away from the forum. 2-Smilies do not work. 3-Rich text editor does not work. Tested in Mozilla Firefox 3.5 and Google Chrome 3.0 -
Hi Shentim. I would like to know where we can buy a card that works with 8.12? Seems the new cards only work with 8.3? 8.3 is very slow and requires much faster and more expensive PC hardware, and even then does not come close to the speed of 8.12, it also installs .NET which I would rather not have on a DVR. Can Geovision perhaps release a "lite" version of their software and which does not have all that extra heavy IP Camera support? Most people just dont need that. I applaud Geovision for fixing the bug where with activeX prior to 8.3 would not work with 8.3+ webcam, now it does at least work with 8.32. Reason I am glad of this, is because the 8.3 activeX controls are very heavy, compared to the good old 7.0 activeX, which is much lighter and just, works. Also, somewhere around 8.31 and above the activeX no longer allows one to set the backcolor or border color, and enable direct draw is no longer functional (without using the classic gui which then gives you an unwanted right click menu with no Hdc), it seems they removed alot to allow room for alot of IP and video server code. Anyway, as mentioned I am happy 7.0 activeX works once again, with 8.32. I am also aware there may be some codec issues later on down the road at some point, but will cross that bridge when I get to it. Thanks, Rory

I like the ability for new users to post links and pictures, simply because sometimes they DO have a legitimate need to do so, and it would be really frustrating for those to not be able to - how many times do we see a newbie come in asking about noise issues, and we ask him to provide pictures of the noise, but he can't embed an image or post a ready-to-click link to it? However, this version of phpBB should have the ability to set new users' posts as "moderated", so for their first "X" number of posts, the posts don't appear until they've been approved by a moderator. (and don't count toward that "X" amount until approved, either). I've found this method VERY effective on another board I admin. Prior to introducing that restriction of not being able to post links, I would be editing or deleting dozens to hundreds of posts a day, as there are so many spammers that are attracted to this particular industry, in fact there are much more spammers than the odd newbie that legitimately wants to post a link. That said, many now just get around that by waiting a while, like a user I banned last night who had joined in December and made a couple useless posts, only to come back last night and flood the board with their spam. So whichever way makes it easier for all, except the spammers, im open to that. -

Ok getting around it better now ... a little different from before. Can we get a themes maybe at some time, to make the fonts etc a little darker? I see the mew items list is red now Also, I noticed a user that joined one day, could post links the next day .. even with only 2 total posts. Additionally it would be nice to see the user as banned when they are, just so we know without having to go into the banned list. -
That could have been a DVR or NVR. You can watch streaming video from a DVR without the DVR recording.

Tell them, talk is cheap. Put up or ... -
Hi, about IP cameras, there are a few regular members on here that like and use them but you would find the majority still use CCTV cameras, and there are alot of DIY coming here looking for assistance of which most would be using the cheapest cameras they can get their hands on. About the DVR, PC based typically gives you much better evidence sharing, backup to AVI, more networking and features overall, as well as easier to replace parts when it breaks down. Stand alone, at least the small 4 channel units, easy to stick in small contained areas, dont get hot, plug and play. The hardware is typically much different, at least in the size of it; smaller onboard CPU and memory with the standalone DVR, less heat. Most standalones also run an Embedded RTOS, and have no internal power supply. Basically a PC DVR and a Standalone DVR are completely different. Another thread I started in reference to this: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=19678 Best way to learn is hands on though .. get some stand alone DVRs and PC DVRs and work them .. or go around people that you know who have the different systems and try them for yourself .. same with the cameras .. get some and test them in harsh environments. Best of luck Rory

Help identify this interference.
rory replied to Steve_C's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
Did they do any hardware or software updates right before it started? Otherwise I would take both pigtails off the card, remove all cameras from both pigtails, then connect just a single test camera onto each channel verifying if the channels are clear. Power the test camera from a separate socket, then try the same socket, then if it still persists move the computer to a completely different location with a different monitor and socket. Looks like it might be electrical interference, possibly something they added to the location just before it started to do this. Try and get the DVR, Monitor, and Camera power on a different breaker. Another thing you could do to test is to remove the drivers then reinstall them, and reinstall the server software. What version of geo is this? If its 8.3 then upgrade to 8.32 or downgrade to 8.12 if its an pre 8.3 card. Just some ideas. -
It should, as you can see I was able to get the Geovision one working even with all the codecs they use. I dont have a mac right now to test though, but once you get it working with Wine in Linux then it should work on the Mac with that Wine setup I linked to. I have a Laptop with Ubuntu Linux here so if you need me to test let me know, but you could always just create a Virtual Box Ubuntu Setup also for testing. I did have issues with other software and database files but that could probably be fixed by installing mdac etc. Rory

Hi Andy you also might want to give this a try, might work for the client software. viewtopic.php?f=12&t=19615 Rory
