    worth it to repair cameras?

Extreme are normally good about it, they may send you replacement boards if you tell them you would like to try fix it yourself. If not they may say to send it back to them for repair - note though they may charge for that. WZ are from Extreme also, but they are their budget cameras.

To get something better? Back to the topic ... all i was saying was why not spend a couple dollars extra for a better CPU thats all? Its a HUGE difference in speed. Then you could more safely give them the option to run the server 24/7 as a CCTV system (running your "client") if they like.

But the other PCs with the client software make up for it

Actually, a standard MATX desktop size, I can build a Dual Core System for under $200. As for price comparisons last I remember you said that IP software was $600 for a 4 channel license? Not to mention the cost of the cameras. All Im saying is why not spend the extra $200 for the core 2 CPU so a client could view the cameras locally like all other CCTV systems? Or at the least give them the option? Especially since they are already spending a fortune on the IP software and cameras. Im just looking for a way I can push it .. thats all

Yeah but retail stores (in other parts of the world) hardly have PCs to monitor the video from, if they do it would normally be full of viruses and slow. Also most retail stores want the video on a TV or monitor for customers, and yes they cant mess with it thats the way its supposed to be. Only the admin is supposed to have access to the PC itself, as with DVRs no user should have access outside of the actual server software, thats why its locked down using the server software so they only see live video, and even then it should be limited to local viewing, etc. depending on user privileges, local playback, and backup (much faster backup locally than over the internet). Bottom line is 2 PCs to do the work of 1 is kind of expensive. But i see what TVengineer is saying for his application, just dont see where it would be useful for anything else.

What happens when you want to view the video? Have you been reading my posts? We are not using this box for the client software I am running the client software on another machine. But then that means they need 2 computers? What would be the sales point in that? What if they want to view the video at the location?

See my reply to wireguys. Its much slower than a core2 Duo, pretty much a 1.6 is the same speed as the 900 celeron but uses less power and is cooler. That replaced the 900 celerons in the netbooks due to less power (more battery time) and cooler (less heat) but speeds were about the same as the celeron. If you can afford the core 2 go that route instead.

pretty sure thats whats in the Eee PCs. Side by side the Celeron 900s (which were in the first set of Eee PCs) are about the same speed if not faster according to tests at the time when they were released. Ive personally used both also and found them about the same.

at TVengineer, maybe wait and get the Core 2 system? The Atom 1.6 is basically the same speed as the Celeron 900. Core 2 is faster. More expensive though
  15. or hook up with a cable runner there and sub that part out to them. most of the time the companies here sub out that kind of work to electricians, let them have the head aches, gives you more time to concentrate on what you do best, the technical side.
  16. Also dont forget to add it to the Trusted sites list. And change from DHCP on the DVR to Static otherwise the IP can change and then port forwarding wont work. Port 80 should be fine unless they are blocking it. I dont know if they even have a portable app for that so IE is the only one to really worry about. Lastly, the Avermedia ActiveX is very unstable, it did crash ALOT during my testing of it with development software, more then any other DVR ive worked with. They do have the app you could use if you continue to have problems with IE7, or try upgrading to IE8, and if all else fails, install XP default with IE6 inside Virtual Box and run it from there.

Yeah but can you get real time video from a 16mp camera? I imagine if its going to be done its gotta be a super computer to begin with
  18. I just try to stay away from those jobs. Cant always though as its all money.
  19. Things is, only people down here that can really afford the wire mold is the rich people, its just so expensive, other then for short runs like in a store or office. So most will just run the cable exposed, yep, or in conduit but unfortunately many clients dont even want that. Ofcourse the connections are never exposed, well some others do that, but they dont last long like that.
  20. sounds like i wish we had siding here, its all concrete in this country, short of some wooden homes on the islands or the shacks deep in the ghetto. Lots of drilling and plastic molding (for those willing to spend $15 per 5' strip!). And in the attics there is high voltage exposed everywhere due to lack of enforced codes.
  21. I thought you knew it all, like from reading all those books and websites, cant you figure this simple thing out on your own??
  22. simple .. childs play .. ive installed hundreds of them over the years. and i never even use a full english keypad. i program 50's with fixed kps, wireless and all. alarms are just simple all around anyway.
  23. Sure there is some loss, like 23.5 volts instead of 24 .. most 24vac cameras can work fine as low as 18 volts, some even less .. i typically use Altronics power supplies and 18awg wire and never had a problem, even with the EX82 cameras which draw alot, though those runs are only around 300'. I mean really over a couple hundred feet the video quality starts to drop also. Back to the OP's post though, individual power supplies are fine according to him, so I still think it is more then likely an isolation issue with the power boards on those cameras. Once he gets an Altronics 24vac Isolated Fused power supply, that might fix the problem either way.
  24. I dont have any problems with port 80 and Avtech DVRs here. If i did though i would normally change to port 81. AvTech apps use Java also, if your Java is bad it wont work. Try it in Firefox, it should work unless it is a very old version. One way to get around any current OS issues it is to install Virtual Box and install default Windows XP inside that, just for the AvTech program. Ive actually done that a few times for other DVR apps that dont work in vista. Also, Scorpion, a member on this forum, knows alot more about the AvTechs than most. On a side note, AvTech has pretty much the most awful network software ive ever seen and the evidence sharing is just as bad.
