  1. The 3 smaller white ones are the IR illuminator halogen bulbs correct? a camera needs some light to see. also .... in the videos on your blog there is a light source coming from the camera area, whether its Infrared or other.
  2. to be fair there's no need to have a UPS for hardware protection. Its the Voltage Regulator that does that work. For example, I have never owned a UPS, but Ive had Voltage Regulators since I got my first desktop computer in 1996. If I dont use it, I will loose hardware left and right, as down here we have black outs and brown outs and just about any kind of bad power issue you can think of. When the power goes out and they turn it back on they have a heavy foot! Ive seen the older UPS without voltage Regulation fried in the past. Actually had alot of issues with UPS down here where it wouldnt power back up after power outages, put it down to, well, too many recurring outages in short time periods .. tripping out the UPS firmware. If it only occurs every so often with a home computer no big deal, DVR where the client is off the island, big issue ... basically just end up using APC Voltage Regulators in most cases now - NTFS File system is okay generally and i rather loose 3-6 seconds of video then not have it power back up at all, plus many people have generators here, and if they dont well the power is off for a few hours anyway.

  6. I am thinking about $10-$15 month for home users. Do you think this is reasonable? I expect that most home applications (monitor pets, entrance to garage, etc) do not require 24x7 recording. And if I record motion activated events only - the traffic and storage becomes reasonable (within few GB a month) There's an alarm company in Canada, called AlarmForce, that has a similar type of business model: you pay nothing up-front for installation or the equipment, and $25/mo for the monitoring. The old-school alarm guys poo-poo it, but we had it once in a rental townhouse, and it works fairly well. The "brain" is just a little box that plugs into power and the phone line; the base price includes one motion sensor and one door sensor (both wireless). For a keypad, you use any existing phone in the house to enter your codes. The "brain" includes a speakerphone setup, so when it goes off, it calls the monitoring station, and they can communicate back directly. The thing we liked about it, being on a really tight budget at the time, was the payment model - most installed systems would have been in the $500-$1000+ range (installed cost), something we could never have afforded at the time. For someone who wants a camera for their home or small business that doesn't have the upfront cash for the system, yours may be a good idea. The catch to the AlarmForce model (there's always a catch, isn't there?) is that you have to sign up for a four-year contract, and early cancellation basically requires you to pay out the rest of the total amount to the end of that term. They also stipulate that they own the equipment, so when you do end your contract, they get the system back. The plus-side to that, for the user, is that they also warranty it for the entire time you have it - the only thing you have to do is change the batteries in the sensors once a year. I know, I'm sounding like a salesman for these guys... but I'm thinking, it's a business model that's worked well for them for a long time (the latest commercials also make a big deal that they haven't changed their monitoring rates in 15+ years), and it may give you some ideas for what you want to do: instead of selling the camera, lease it to the customer along with the service. If they ever terminate, you take the camera back, and you can lease it to someone else. Now the downside to that, with the cameras, is that the technology is moving so fast, but you could add in a clause that provides for future upgrades as well. The main idea is, it's additional peace of mind for the customer, that they don't have to ever worry about the hardware, and the ability to get it installed and running without a huge up-front cash outlay will be attractive to a lot of people, especially in today's economy. Of course, you'll have to work out what kind of monthly rate and contract term will allow you to recoup your costs properly - $25/mo for four years is a total of $1200, but compare that to what it would cost them to get the camera and a recorder, and then get it installed, and then add the remote recording on top of that. In the case of the alarm setup, monitoring for a regular home alarm at the time was $15-$20/mo., which added to even a mere $500 installation would have come to $1220-$1960 over the four years. The other thing you'd have to be sure to include is a stipulation that broadband internet is required on-site, and that the customer is wholly responsible for the reliability of his own internet connection (meaning, if it's flaky or goes down, he has to deal with the provider to get it going). I know a guy who's monitoring company does free alarms here. They give you the alarm system, installed for free - ademco wireless system, 3TX, 1 Wireless Motion, Keypad, Indoor Siren - free install and you keep the product - no contracts. Catch is you pay 1 year monitoring up front, which is really about the typical price of the parts - approx $350 down here in the Bahamas. All monitoring for 1 year is already paid and after that year they can cancel monitoring or switch if they want as the product is theirs. Hes making a killing off that here.
  7. you wont take people away from locally placed DVRs/TVs. You can do this as an optional service. cons are: 1-Internet goes down - less you have some amazing service like soundy, most of us dont. 2-Website goes down - yep your server, things happen. 3-Extra Expense - yours PLUS the internet connection - and no, not everyone has internet connections automatically, that still costs money. 4-Extra expense for Network camera/device - yep, basic CCTV camera cost under $100, throw any old RCA or coax wire across the attic and stick it into TV .. pretty str8 forward and cheap. 5-Using Internet Explorer for ActiveX? I cant tell but if so, many people dont even have it installed anymore, security issues. Should look at giving them an option of downloadable software that can be run on their PC. my 5 cents.
  8. i want to live where you do. ps. thats actually quite unusual to have such good internet uptime.

ok i will be sure to end this argument now. best way is to use your eyes! if you cant do that then perhaps you should be out cleaning pools instead (start with my imaginary pool!)
  13. They look ok on the outside, not sure on the exact specs but examples look good also. Need some outside shots though, IR is always easy with indoor shots but outdoors is where it gets difficult. Basically need to get them to a US distributor and let them push them for you. Most people on here either buy from distributors, dealers, or retailers ... in other words most on here dont buy direct from the manufacturer.
  14. with any company in china, you are investing in their communist government with every purchase not that I dont buy chinese products, crap we all do whether we know it or not .. just saying ... remember that buying any product made in china, or anything that has components made in china, we are supporting a government that does not allow its people to be free. And with that said, to our esteemed colleague from china, to bypass that great firewall you are behind and being monitored, here is a link to some great software: http://www.torproject.org - Dont let them hold you down! FREEDOM IS POSSIBLE!
  15. Thanks, I still dont understand, are these simply Day Night cameras, with additional IR Illuminators as shown in the photo above? 930nm above is invisible to the human eye, I have used it before. To be honest I prefer something I can see. Also, they should advertise the distance in feet for the north american market.

  17. looks like your average Day Night IR camera. Are the specs posted anywhere, photos of the camera? Why would someone buy this instead of say Extreme CCTV cameras? Is it cheaper? Any warranty? Color video/image examples of when it switches over to BW/IR? thanks.

    Say what?

Did you use Aluminum shield on your other systems? Ive even seen this happen on GE (Kalatel) Stand alone systems in the past; ground related.
  19. rory

    Say what?

Sounds like you need an Isolated Power supply. That should fix any noise problems. It would be a ground issue if anything. The watchdog reboot can be disabled BTW. Also, what version of Geo is there, as some older versions were pretty awful. Believe it or not, even with all of its own issues, Geo is still one of the best card/interfaces out there .. ive used many and most just suck.

Hi Larry, Glad to see its back up and running smooth Rory
  21. Day/Night or IR lens does not require filter. otherwise just focus in low light then no need for filter.

    IP vs. Analog

Just because they are able to set up an IP camera, doesnt mean the video surveillance application is being done right. As to learning "IP", a 5 year old can do that these days. So what I am trying to work out at the moment is can you setup two Vlans on one switch that are connected together without a router then use IGMP policies to filter out specific multicast groups. This is an option to the easier task of filtering ports via a firewall or bridge. While I can make this work is it in the design specs of IGMP V3 and VLAN 802.1p/q Or is there a chance that if I deploy this it will fail if we introduce new switches at some stage in the future. Also how difficult will this become to manage and will Dynamic vlan port allocation become an issue. Has anyone got a list of switches that don't default to IGMP and treat multicasts as broadcasts by default? Does anyone know the answer to these? The more important question is, how much is the client willing to pay for this info? I dont work for free anymore.
