Card Selection for Vista
rory replied to bptmanager's topic in DVR Cards and Software - PC Based Systems
Actually I think its a Microsoft Problem, Vista is one huge resource hog. One needs super fast hardware to come close to and still not match the performance of XP. -
Arecont Vision has released a full line of H.264 cameras...

First if one can find an Analogue camera, please post the link. Second, we have a few long threads on this already in the IP forum

The video card is mostly for local live display, quality, features like S-Video, DVI output, etc. It does need to support Direct Draw Overlay (with the GV250-800's and the Combo cards at least) but most of todays video cards will do that, even Intel's onboard video will work in most cases (Intel's onboard video doesnt have DVI though). DVI gives you better local quality for the live video for example, doesn't effect the actual recording though. Typically using 256MB cards, really whatever is available at the time, I prefer ATI but also use Nvidia as those are easier to get my hands on these days. If I can find a 128MB card for $30 then I use that But since you are going high end anyway, maybe look at 256-512 cards, see if you can get ones with dedicated memory (no hypermemory etc).

Can someone please help a newbie choose a decent DVR card
rory replied to chapin4life's topic in DVR Cards and Software - PC Based Systems
$70 retail is a very cheap DVR Card also. They shouldn't be used for any real security installation. Most probably use Direct Show in that price range. Personally I wouldn't touch them. As for the $3 DVR Card, LOL. -

Looks good to me. Once the PC works without issues then the DVR side should be fine.
-
Yes that needs to be set to Motion .. also dont set the DVR to AUTO record or when it reboots from power outage it will automatically go into record mode, same as pressing the record button.

doesnt look like the IR Cut filter is working, and or the Iris is closed too much. make sure its getting enough power too.
-
Anything I could help with?
-
if you haven't made any adjustments and its less IR than before and in a smaller area, maybe a power issue. Also make sure no wires came loose in the move of the camera. Check all connectors inside the camera as well, make sure they are attached properly. According to Figure 2.2 on Page 8 that is the adjustment for the IR brightness, the amount of power than is sent to the IRs.

Cant remember off hand, cheap eclipse color bullets though, and a BW Bullet. there's a night video also http://www.bahamassecurity.com/video/night_quad.Avi

Nice thing is they have the Linux Recovery right there on the DVD .. I did it once just to see if it works and it does, recreates all 4 partitions and installs linux as it was when the PC first came. So you can always go back ..
-
They have low and mid range products .. just depends on which ones you choose. Right now alot of their new cameras use Panasonic CCDs which although seem to be better quality than the older ones which used Sony, they dont work properly on GeoVision DVRs. So I cant say they will also work properly on other PC Based. Once not using PC based though they seem to be fine. They are no Sanyo or Extreme CCTV, but they cost almost 1/4 the price in most cases. Their little cheap color bullet does a decent job for the price, better than others ive used. Their ECL-598HIM would do about 50' of IR and switch from color to BW at night. If its pitch dark and you are mounting it on the 2nd floor though the IR wont do much from way up there. Otherwise it works the same as other "True" Day Night infrared Bullets.

yep .. what do you want to know? Also Scorpion is a big time buyer of them

I lived inside Virtual Box for a couple Months .. No seriously, Nlite ofcourse, but yeah I still live inside VBox as well as the Registry. Well there are many that just have the default XP Installed on it .. I did also .. but I didnt want that .. its not bad with it, but its also not great! Anyway, originally I was Nliting for the space, but in the end it was also for the speed - 10 seconds to the desktop - even my desktop cant come close. In fact the only thing better was Virtual box which was 5 seconds. And how do I calculate the boot times? I made a program to do that ofcourse. If you have the 4G, its clocked at 630Mhz by default, the 2G is clocked at 571Mhz. I think the 8G and the 900 are the same as the 4G in that regard. Anyway, someone made an overclocking program that you can run to bring it back to 900Mhz, not on the 2G though as its a different system and slower. Also a newer BIOS takes care of that too but I had issues with it so went back to the original one that came with the Eee PC, the 401 BIOS. Anyway, the CPU is the issue if anything, size of the SSD could be a little too, but personally the size is not much of an issue for me anymore with 270MB XP SP2 Installs (130MB ISO). Asus provides the drivers for XP on their site and also it comes on a DVD. Better yet though someone on the eeeforum made a slipstreamed lightweight version of them which we just add to Nlite. So no problems there, works well Ofcourse performance gets better with the more things you disable, and that includes the Webcam, Lan, Audio, and with just 11 services set to automatic and started, the rest mostly on disabled and a few on manual, 2GB of Ram, No Page file, quite a few other minor tweaks .. she flies! http://www.metacafe.com/watch/1284297/eee_pc_701_tweaked_fast_boot/ and one that shows me watching the remote video, actually this one has themes enabled too unlike the other one: http://www.bahamassecurity.com/eeepc/eeepcTweaked2.wmv Anyway, down to business .. The Nlite session file: http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=22332 The USB Setup program I just released (BETA): http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=30920 ive been using it for a couple months myself just updated the USB prep part of it Reg Tweaks for the Eee PC: http://www.bahamassecurity.com/eeepc/EeePCMainHacks.REG And a Post install Services Tweak program: http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?pid=255465#p255465 BootTimer: http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?pid=245244#p245244 Remove ALL page files from ALL local drives: http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?pid=273508#p273508 Basically I also created a recovery SD Card using another method I made based on DriveSnapshot and MS-DOS. I Carry that SD card with me and if I ever need to, can restore in 5 minutes.
