  1. Down here the government only pays 10% deposit, so someone selling them a $1,000 DVR, quotes it for $10,000!! Actually I was told by a local police division here they paid $17,000 for a DVR, which could not have cost more than $3,000 first cost, and being a PC based DVR, would have been duty free and cost no more than $150 to land it!! Needless to say though, I'm not interested in doing work for the government here, I know a couple people that do and they can take 2 years to get paid the balance in most cases.
  2. Looks like it has 6 IRs . though I imagine it doesnt have an IR Cut Filter so that image on the screen is probably not real I figure the external antenna gives it longer range? Maybe have internal then just an option for an additional antenna, use antennas like the ones for Linksys routers so we can buy them anywhere. 5.8? Would be nice, maybe more expensive though? Would be nice if it had 2 Cameras, a seperate color and a seperate BW, then the IR, a photocell to switch to BW IR mode, and a pot level to adjust the amount of IR and another to adjust the photocell switchover ... now maybe we are getting too expensive though but .. someone might want good quality. Ahh, perhaps also look at WDR like Pixim?
  3. Ofcourse, silicone, its basically rubber, the best and only thing I ever use. holds up through hurricanes, so good enough for me. BTW I have not seen one really weatherproof vandal dome yet, let alone a mini dome. You'd best seal that baby right up if you want it to last.

    DOM chip help

Right now though USB is slow, compared to HDD and then Solid State Flash Drives ... anyone used the Gigabyte iRam before, the ones that use RAM? I wish they would start selling those again, regardless of their own issues (loose power, loose everything). http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Storage/Products_Overview.aspx?ProductID=2180 http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-51784544344753709 Anyway, HDD will be gone soon hopefully, by the end of this year or early next year, there should be some 500GB Solid State 3.5" Flash Drives (if they aren't already out, read about it a few months back)

Legit Geo CD, now a DVD

I use the DVD-RW in the high end ones, just the CDRW in the budget ones. That said, I dont know of any of my clients that have ever used the DVD-RW (personally I never have either) .. most have USB drives that hold much more and is sooo much easier to use. DVD disks are more $$ down here actually. Also never had to back up anything over the size of a CD. Evidence for the cops has only required the video of the incident in my experience, so typically its been no more than 100MB.

Legit Geo CD, now a DVD

Well I'll be, I just received a Geo card, and the CD is not a CD, its a DVD. Now how do they expect that to run in a CD Drive!?? They messed up big with that idea .. well lucky I have 8.12 anyway, but for others out there, be aware they seem to be sending DVDs now instead of CDs. Rory

    Cat5 Cable + and -

nah, was different cameras, cables, etc, I tried everything. Ive seen images before from others that looked the same at similar lengths using baluns.

Focused at night, blurry in day?

Ive been told of this method before, tried it down here with some 850nm filters, it didnt work, so threw the idea in the bin. In fact, I could barely see through the filter in the day. Also tried polarizing filters, those were useless. But, I dont think the sun will be out all day (its not even down here), so are you certain this is not happening when clouds are going over, and there is not full sunlight? Also, you mentioned a Zoom lens, is this a manual zoom lens (Varifocal) or Auto Zoom - if the later, that maybe the problem, have they been backfocused properly? BTW if you use fixed lenses you should not have this problem, but then ofcourse you wont be able to zoom Also, what cameras and what lenses, and is it happening on all of them?
  9. Ive always used caulking.

    Cat5 Cable + and -

Yep we went over this already though, not all Passive Baluns, not even the expensive and well known ones, give you good quality over 150', as both I used for example, were from well known brands. Guess you have been lucky so far

    Cat5 Cable + and -

That was not relative to Coax, just cat5. Surely you arent running cat5 without baluns or UTP Transceivers at 500'?

Legit Geo CD, now a DVD

Nah I biy from a US Distributor, an advertiser on this forum actually. I dont buy enough to warrant buying from Geo themselves.
  13. Ive found it the other way, more clients down here want to see the labor. Also, personally I would not accept a quote for something else without knowing what the labor is, was very particular with this also when on a board of directors and we had to choose from 3 quotes. After all, we could have been getting ripped off.

Legit Geo CD, now a DVD

Darn, last card I got had a CD though, was only a month or so ago .. But yeah the CDRW is still cheaper than the DVDRW .. like $15 instead of $30 .. on the US side. Never thought of getting a DVD/CDRW Combo as we dont need a DVD player for the DVR, though those are not much more than the CDRWs. Rory

    Viewlog video size issue

Yep that also, or it will be even smaller.

    Viewlog video size issue

The size it defaults to when you load it, will be for example, 640x480. It will look small because thats the size, from say the monitor's resolution of 1280 to the video size of 640 .. I dont know of any setting off hand that will make it a particular zoom unfortunately. Im sure one could write something that changes it but then thats another program always running in the background.

    Free Internet

Hey, how's it going Yep, I wish they did come here, we need wireless, there is nothing right now. We need someone with at least $25 million to blanket the major islands with Wireless. Unfortunately though they will have to fight the local monopoly to get a license for it, but the right person with the right amount of cash and background and experience in the field, should be able to pull it off. Our only Cable company here, came from Canada That said, the majority of routers being sold here now are linksys 4 port wireless, and almost nobody locks down their wireless, so you can drive all over the main island and hit wireless quite often, though island wide would be nice, and also the out islands really could use it, right now they are suffering with DSL (though dial up still in most cases) which is the other monopoly, our local government owned telco, and the DSL they use is way behind cable.

What is the highest CCTV camera resolution?

Hi, Please see these threads: http://www.cctvforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=5523 http://www.cctvforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=9543 http://www.cctvforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=3012 http://www.cctvforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=9035 http://www.cctvforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=9225 http://www.cctvforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=9001 http://www.cctvforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=8775 http://www.cctvforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=8092 To get right down to it, Highest Color is typically 500TVL and Highest BW is typically 600TVL. There are some 520-540 color cameras but they are digitized if anything as they have the same effective image pixels and the quality difference is barely noticeable from a 480TVL camera. Many color cameras these days spec their resolution at 520TVL though. Covi has a camera that claims to be the highest resolution CCTV camera: http://covitechnologies.com/products/analog Other than that, you would need to go for Megapixel Network Cameras to get any really noticeable increase in quality. Made this thread a sticky for now.
  22. Hi, the problem with a dual day night camera is that it wont see as much in low light as a BW only camera, even if its exview. Ive used standard BW bullets for several years in the club. Ive also used some mini BW exview bullets recently and they were great, but the distributors have now stopped selling them. I just ordered some High Res Exview BW bullets though, so will see how they perform. KPC-EXH190SWX - KPC-EXH190SWX 1/3" Sony ExView CCD 600 TV Lines Weatherproof Bullet Camera However, if it is really dark as you mentioned, you may need IR either way. Exview works by gathering all available light in the picture and spreading that over the entire image, so that is why you will get more pixelisation as the light in the image diminishes. Your best bet would be a BW camera, any high res one, then add additional IR bulb/LED, which can be mounted at a lower level than the camera and point it upwards so it does not reflect off the people or other objects, as then they would just be one big glare. You should look into something from Extreme CCTV, they have the IR Cubes which are fairly covert, and you can adjust the level of IR if needed, as well as choose the beam and filter required. The EX12LED is comprised of 42 LEDs mounted to a solid core CNC machined aluminium housing that acts as a heat sink. A voltage regulator allows for 12 VDC or 24 VAC operation. An adjustable photocell allows the installer to set the ambient light level for on/off operation. The EX12LED is available in 850nm or 940nm, 30 degree or 60 degree beam patterns achievable beam distances of 10 to 40 feet (3 to 12 meters). http://www.extremecctv.com/product_detail.php?producttype_id=1&page=1&product_id=12 Depending on the area to cover though, you may need something with a longer IR range, such as the EX26LED (30-60' approx) or the UF100 (50-150' approx) both depending on the filter and beam selected, as well as the installation location and adjustments. You can adjust the level of IR on both the EX12LED and the EX26LED using a pot level, but on the UF100 you would need to tweak the PSU to step down the amount of power being sent to it, which lowers the IR output. 23. I used an Extreme CCTV 1/2" Camera before, didnt notice any difference, in fact I ended up switching it out to a Sanyo 1/3".
  24. The problem you will encounter is pointing them at the door, if they are regular cameras it will typically be difficult to make out the persons face, etc, due to backlighting. You could use the backlighting features on some domes, most budget domes wont have this as a manual setting though. But even for that it needs to be zoomed right in on the door to work, and even then, you will only see them once they are inside, nothing outside and still can have some glare issues depending on the camera - box cameras are best for this. Basically these days one would use Wide Dynamic range cameras (WDR), but they are not cheap, and even more expensive in a Dome version. So with that said, if they are on a strict budget, and the DVR etc will take up alot of that $2000, you may just want to get an OEM Dome or Bullet camera and dont point them at the door, either point it looking in, or sideways. Remember that any windows it may be looking at would cause the same glare issues, at least during the day. Nuvico has some decent cameras for OEM, and there are others.
  25. Hi, will this be indoors or outdoors? Rory
