    DVR Replacement Drives

Sounds like the GE/Kalatel drives .. i have one sitting right here on my desk You can still buy them, a client of mine did, but yes they are hard to find typically. Laptop drives are typically 5400 rpm still though (less power), so you could use one of those .. its a power issue really, so if you mod a PC power supply to the DVR you could just use a standard 7200rpm drive.
  4. Hi Guys, best to contact GE, they should send it to you, or provide a link to download. Unfortunately I cant locate it on my PC at this time .. sorry.

    Is this system any good?

Its a custom built PC from an online store .. 3Ghz P4, 512DDR, Intel 865 chipset .. I dont know how its specs will be slowing down your network though, unless it is loaded with malware or viruses .. Looks like a pretty old system, maybe look at an upgrade if the company can afford it. Otherwise best to do a reformat and reload windows and geo. You could clean it up but its been a while, I would just do a fresh installation.
  7. ive been testing a GV1480 for the past few days, on a Core 2 Duo 2.4 with 2GB DDR2 667 .. if anything it doesnt use much CPU, it has tons left, I would spend the extra money on more ram .. THAT it does use alot of .. If the Core 2 Quad which is now $500, becomes the same price as the Core 2 duo then obviously there should be no question which one to get If you want to know the specs of this one let me know .. all i can say is the Asus boards are great, though the SoundMax audio they are currently using is awful as far as drivers go. There are some bugs which Ive posted fixes for on Asus's forums for both the P5L-MX and the P5B-Deluxe, id imagine the same would go for other motherboards using these audio chips. Otherwise the only thing I would add to this, would be 2x2GB Dual Channel DDR2-800. Although that said, still the 2GB DDR2-667 I have here is not suffering at all. I would also have liked to try a WD Raptor for the system drive, but maybe next time.
  8. He hasnt posted since February, just checking that he is okay .. Anyone dealing with VI please also ask them .. thanks. Rory

    CCTV CONTEST!

thats really not a CCTV techs specialty. If they choose to pull the wire too, so be it, but anyone can run the cable, electrician, telco guys, even a janitor. Lets give them a reward based on their CCTV talent.

Any using a GV800 with 8 or more cameras?

viewing and recording them, the GV1480 recording is around the same as the GV800 anyway, at least in Mpeg4 and 640x480. The only real difference between the 2 is the GV1480 has all channels in real time live view, and has the video output. Upload speeds vary, DSL is really slow, Cable can be really good, depends on what you pay them. We have direct fiber links from the US. Not all the outislands though, just some of the more populated islands. Company called Caribbean Crossings.

Any using a GV800 with 8 or more cameras?

Looks fine, its still fast, using 16 cameras. It use to be fast enough @ 10fps on stand alone systems, so yeah 120fps is great. Also, a local alarm company here records at 1fps per camera, and it captures everything fine.
  14. One solution is tell them run wire

  19. well you could just disable windows help, also is the run menu still there? You can also disable that, if it is there: type: control desk.cpl to bring up the display properties (not sure about win 98 though) or just type: control to bring up the control panel also you can do that from the MS DOS Prompt or Command Prompt. I know how to lock down XP, cant speak for ME/98 right now though, its been a long time plus never had the need.
  20. We do use a Color Vandal Dome at the main entrance, and a color pro box camera in the car park, but the client provides ample lighting, so its almost like daylight. We can then track them in the club with the BW cameras, and the color dome is zoomed in at the narrow entrance to capture their face. The car park cam is for the cars, as people have come before to try to burn the place down, and we wanted the color of the vehicle. Tried many different low light cameras in the club though at the bars, dance floor etc; color, color exview, extreme CCTV cameras, color IR, True Day Night w/ and w/o IR, and neither was satisfactory for quality; hence BW was the winner. Only one bar where I needed IR, and thats because BW did not work in the very low light they had there at the bar itself, it was a "sweetheart" type bar, where the clients come to hide from their other half
  21. Nightclubs? BW is the real only option for high quality video, in most cases you will never require IR.

    GE Store Safe Pro

they are regular hard drives, kind of. You would need to locate 5400rpm drives, the ones they use are Maxtors, so best to locate that model. Not sure about the Pro model, but the other ones come with 2 drives. You could use 2x160GB drives to get 320GB. A client of mine found them online last year, should be able to locate them through a search engine. Basically there is a master and a slave, so you just set the jumpers appropriately, and it may format it when you start the DVR. You will however loose the wavebrowser files that are on the old HDD. There is a way to put them back on, but you might not want to mess with that. Im also not sure if that works for the storesafes and maybe not even for the model you have anyway ... Anyway .. so there are options .. GE will charge you if you have them do it .. to the point that you could almost buy a new DVR
