XP embedded is an OS that is embedded on a chip .. Its basically an installer customized version of XP .. If you've ever used Nlite, its a similar idea. There are cheap embedded units, and expensive ones, just cause they cost alot doesnt mean they are better though. Same with PC based. Apples and oranges .. PC based typically have more features and higher evidence sharing quality these days, and are easier (or moreso quicker) to replace parts on. Primary reason i made the switch over to the PC DVRs, but only the decent ones, because of parts and cost to import - PCs are duty free, video machines (eg. Embedded DVRs) cost alot of custom duty. I still love the embedded standalones (GE) but the high end user cost wasnt geting me any jobs. If you dont know how to change a hard drive and install an OS though, its best to either sub that out, learn it, or use the Embedded units. Also, note the age of this debate, since then both the Windows XP OS has come a long way, and cards like Geovision have improved greatly, not to mention the higher quality of their software now compared to a couple years back. But note that you still cannot just dump a default XP system on a client, it needs to be setup and tweaked properly.

Well there are alot of programs open, but with that CPU and Memory they shouldnt affect it much. If you are also streaming video and watching a bunch of movies, well that would work it hard but still with those specs, doubt it much. I would look at the Hard Drive, Log Locations, Video Card/Settings. Is it a new Hard Drive? Is it noisy or quiet? How many partitions do you have, and where are the Video and System logs being stored? make sure only the channels with video are enabled also. If not using Audio, disable that as well. Ive run a GV250-2 on my PC for well over a year, its a 2Ghz so I cant really watch movies at the same time, well I can, but it gets slower. So with the specs of that system should be fine. Is it slow, does it freeze, when it is not recording also? Rory

Geo is actually as stable as they come .. well there are others but basically it is stable software and drivers especially compared to many others. Ill take a look at the video.

3 is normal, but it depends on you and your application. Which DVR is it?

the distance of cat5 runs will depend on the product used, but dont believe any of the passive balun distances cause even if they do break 1000' the quality deminishes alot anywhere after 150' anyways. Only use Cat5 when you need to and use Active on at least one end of the run. The quality decreases, as it would with Rg59, but at closer distances. Active is Amplified so that fixes that issue. Also, with NVT active gear they have ground loop isolation and other features built in, so sometimes that comes in handy depending on the app.

Yeah just turn off the firewall for now. When you start the server, there should be a Blue EYE icon in the system tray, click on that and the configure part comes up, there is a text box area with the password in **** .. delete and enter a new one there. Then PM me the IP and Password. Rory

no prob, make sure port 5900 is forwarded if using a router, and if windows firewall is enabled, open port 5900 there also. Then I just need the IP and password, you need to setup a password in the server admin part. Rory

Hi, I wont be touching the DVR in this case, turns out they never were controlling via the DVR, just the Keypad controller. They apparently have the latest software though, but still it only does AD and pelco, but either way they wont be using the DVR to control them. In this case though they definately dont want any more AD Domes, those lasted only 1 year, we are switching to GE as I know they last through our weather down here since ive used them before.

thats the only one ive ever seen with playback in java. -
Whats the motherboard chipset? Also, maybe best to reformat and load XP (w/ SP2) At the same time make sure it is partitioned into at least 2 partitions. Video and Video Log goes on the 2nd partition. Make the system drive 10 or 20GB depending on the size of your hDD. Rory

rory replied to Rebco's topic in DVR Cards and Software - PC Based Systems
yes, under scheduling, click properties and disable it there. -
yeah that should work .. been a while for me and relays .. I think you connect the motion to the NC/C inputs, and the output to the strobe .. as it uses the same as a siren. Look at the ELK SL1 Series Strobe Lights and the ELK-WK1 Strobe Wall Mount Kit.

these guys have it .. http://www.advancedsecuritylink.com/demo/demo.htm I cant speak for the DVR's themselves though as never used them. Just tested the Demo out a couple weeks back and plays back etc, its all in Java. -
Merry Christmas from the Bahamas! Im still wondering when Winter is going to arrive already ..

buy the 12VDC Strobes used for Burglar alarms, then using a basic 12VDC Relay tie them together .. its cheap and simple, and doesnt require any high voltage. If its indoor then a Zodiac Motion Detector would work fine.
-
you want a PC Audio Input .. either get an adapter for the 2, or splice it and join together .. or if you dont really care about how it looks, you could bend the outer rings back on that end, so it may fit.

Hi, are you running in 32 or 16 bit colors?
-
How much disk space is left on drive C? Make sure only the cameras that are working are enabled Goto the System LOG and look at when it shut down, it should say how the Geo system logged off This is only the Geo Software turning off, and not the whole PC right? All else fails, install Ultra VNC and PM me the login details, Ill check it out for you. Rory
