Need to install a new system

im behind you, you have showed your knowledge already good looking out ... PS. Im still getting undercut by people i know that are doing the job for less, guess how I feel about that, plus they are getting some joe blow that is not even a legal resident here and has no experience in CCTV just will work for nothing as he is illegal here for good reasons, to install the wire and cameras, and using cheap gear. Mind you they are still not charging that cheap, I would still work for their price but they are greedy and only care about their own pocket ..Arghhh. And to think that person is supposed to be my friend .. Its noone on this forum btw, it is a local here. And no our imigration dept couldnt care less, they never heard of answering the telephone!

Need to install a new system

What they ^ said and then .... ----------------------------------------- What Kind of Recording Length are you looking for (such as 1 day, 7 days, 1 month, etc) Are you interested in just networking to the DVR to review playback, or would you like to also have files such as AVIs (such as to take the HDD and play them in another computer?) Are you going to require this to be viewed over the internet, and if so, what type of internet connection do you have, and are there any other computers on the same connection? Are you interested in Real Time Playback, and at what quality level? (eg. 4 cameras at real time will require 120fps/pps, and high quality would be 640x480/720x480) Would there be any other users besides yourself, or a single user is fine? (for network connection, and also local viewing) Do you have any requirements for viewing the cameras on your Home TV? Are you more geared towards a Stand Alone DVR System, or a PC based? How is the Surge, Brownout, and Power Outage situation in your area? Is there anything else I left out that you have your mind set on, as far as the system is concerned? As for cameras, do you require vandal resistance? You mentioned Lighting is low, is Color a priority in the day time? Also, when you say Yard Lights, are these just the little bulbs that go at ground height? Is there no other lighting on the building? If you want color in the day, is it possible to install additional lighting for night time? If you are interested in a day Night camera, which switches from color to BW, would you also like infrared, and to what distance? If using Infrared, are there any walls or bush that the Infrared can reflect off? What height are you looking to install the cameras at? What is the shape of the house? Is this a single or multiple storey house? Can you use the Attic Eave or wall under the Eave, or will this have to be mounted elsewhere? Cheaper Day Night cameras dont have filters that block out IR day time effects such as from the sun, this causes off colors in the day time, and these are typical in cheap day night cameras. Are you looking to spend on a True Day Night camera that blocks out these IR effects in the day time, or would the cheaper one suffice? What kind of weather conditions would these cameras be subjected to? Do you require discreet cameras, or are you interested in cameras that will stand out? Do you have a basic idea of the budget for this application? You mentioned installing them yourself, are you confident enough that you can handle the job at hand? If not we can give you a local installers contact. Approximate distance from camera Field of View to Object for proper identification is 50 feet or less depending on the requirements of identification. You mentioned Monitoring is 80-120 feet, are any facial features required, or will general observation will suffice? ----------------------------------------- Rory

  10. Hi, Ive used that Video card with 2 different DVR cards, Iview and Geo, and although it is not the easiest to set up, you can make it work with both a TV and PC Monitor, just needs some settings changed. Its been a while so I cant remeber straight off what I did, but if you can get some screen shots of the Ati settings, PM or email me them, or post here if you want. If not, do you have VNC can check it out. What I normally do, if I dont have the DSP card, is use the RCA out, you see what the PC sees, but set the DVR to full screen on start, and a basic user so if someone does come in the room they cant do anything but see the 4 cameras, no GUI and cant access any of the DVR system, without logging back in as Admin. Nuvico NVCC-SVD cameras

I gave up on Nuvico a long time ago, when they were pushing me to Puerto Rico to buy, and im in the Bahamas ... anyways, the support from Extreme for WizKid and Extreme cameras is unbeatable. Im still open to ideas, but for now ..

  13. Cant help yah with Linux, but get one of the following boards, get the Nucleus RTOS, start soldering the BNCs on, program the RTOS Nucleus DVR Video software, and whallop you got something 100 times better than linux and in a stand alone unit http://www.acceleratedtechnology.com/ Meanwhile, are the same codecs available for linux as for windows? Geo with Dual Core Processor

Rained all day, also a tropical storm last couple days Best to ask Scott as I havent used multiple drives on them yet, but theoretically that should be how it works. The video is saved in AVI files so you can view them anywhere. Rory

    Geo with Dual Core Processor

You still need the PC monitor, for set up, etc. Just not as clear as pure composite video. Anyway, im getting 5 full days at that setting with a 250GB HDD, the 720x480 takes alot, cuts your time down by at least 50% or more. Basically if you need 7 days with those settings, you are looking at maybe 2x160s or 2x250s, something like that. Now that said, I use motion detection so im not recording 16 hours a day, not even close, so you will definately need alot more storage. Good thing is with the PC you can always install additional, and assign it to Geo to span.

    PTZ's vs. Multiple Fixed Cameras

PTZ is nice, but then how many clients can afford them. Also, remember a PTZ is useless without a fixed camera covering the area as well, at least for security purposes. Basically I wouldnt use a PTZ without a fixed camera, unless like griff said, install a ton of PTZs and use some of them in fixed positions
  23. Its funny that at the price of the GE Security DVRs, they only use Maxtor IDE hard drives ..

    Geo with Dual Core Processor

GV 1240 will display and record in 240fps, while the 800 is 120fps. The 1240 also has the DSP output for high quality analogue output to a TV or CCTV Monitor, which will be much crisper than a PC monitor, and it is also real time. That particular unit is 5 cameras, recording in highest res, 720x480, Smart Recording (it distributes the recording speed between the connected cameras when they are triggered with motion detection) , set to motion detection. Its using the Geo Mpeg4 codec. These are the EX80s and EX82s so night time is very good with motion. Also, i turn off a ton of Windows XP services that most others leave on. Rory
  25. no unions here besides the government and hotel ones .. they are destroying the country here especially since our main industry is Tourism, and the workers dont have to perform anymore so service really sucks, they cant get fired no matter what! If you hear a thank you, or even get noticed when you go inside a store or restaurant, then you are very lucky and you gotta stick with that place. Most Bahamians want unions to be destroyed here, the union leaders are making a fortune. Small businesses rarely survive thanks to the unions. Another example is a hotel had to close down from lack of busines and money after getting destroyed in last lears hurricanes. The staff demanded cash and the government paid out 1.5 million that they had to borrow from the US!
