For outdoors pretty much no, but for inside a small room, something in that price range should work ok. AT least if you are going to try it, get a BW camera with IR, not color. Provideo has some a little higher than that price that should do it, but depends if it is wide open space (harder - need more powerful IR), or an enclosed area.

okay dudes whats the best network switch brands out there, looking for a 16 channel and some 4 or 5 channels .. Cost not an issue, internal network only. thanks Rory

Well ive converted one of those before, where the camera gets power from the monitor. This is how its done. Excuse me its been 4 years or so. There should be video, positive, ground, audio - 4 wires like yellow, red, black, green. Its going to be splice mess just to mention. Anyway, colors may differ also. Yellow goes to the Coax Center. Red either goes to a new power supply positive end, or keep on into the monitor. Green goes to audio somwhere. All blacks tie together, and splice it into each outgoing ground wire. So depends what exactly he is doing, but seems these cameras get power from the monitor, at least the system I converted did. You can take it off that and buy a universal power supply, as I think they use 15VDC, so you have to set it to that. Then you can also utilize the audio, and ofcourse connect the video to anything you want. Rory

Yeah, you mean because it isn't twisted? No, because of what type of system it is coming from, and the distance from that system, and where it is going. Basically sounds like you are splicing a telco wire, into a RG59 Cable, or this balun going right onto a monitor?
-
What is the RG11 Plug coming from, and where is it going?
-
Just use the video from your wire, yellow and green or whatever 2 wires it is, same thing no matter what wire you use. Its all composite video. But the telco wire end could be an issue. What type of system is the telco end coing from??
-
Phew, thats a long one RG59 right ?

Eclipse "just" started selling this unit. They used HiSharp before, and before that something else. At least the eclipse guys in Miami. They actually have 2 decent DVRs on their list now, the nubix (active tek) and this one.

http://www.bahamassecurity.com/xtreme1.htm this is the 4 channel DVR listed on the CPCam Site: Use IE only. Allow ActiveX Prompt or enable. If you want to test the client software PM me. Also see this post. http://www.cctvforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=1740

AvTech makes solid 4 and 16 channel units for a low price tag. Browser based and Client software, the browser based requires Internet Explorer, or at least ActiveX Support. Network software isnt great, and being this is the same DVR i imagine its the same software. But for the price .. Im working with an AvTech contact now on getting info to customize the browser's default HTML page, I already did customize it but it needs to be uploaded to the DVR as it will only load if its on the DVR server. Network speed is 10/100. I dont know how much the Eclipse model is, and Im waiting on bulk pricing direct from AvTech then I can give you a price. The regular AvTech 16 channel goes for around $800 approx. retail. So this MPEG4 one may cost a little bit more.

does sharp make an exview chip?? You would want to check out ExtremeCCTV.com Also, what kind of distance are you looking at? Rory
-
Thats the AvTech 16 channel MPEG4 DVR. http://www.cpcamcctv.com/507.htm Rory

Exview has multiple levels of chips, different prices, If you buy an expensive brand you normally get the best one, cheaper model you get the cheapest. Exview Color mode is low light color, will pixelise to obtain that low light, which normal color cameras, and Superhad, wont see anything. So there is a trade off. Exview BW depends on the camera, doesnt pixelize, and also the chip varies among the brands. Decent Exview's these days will even switch to a digital BW mode. Having an IR cut filter depends on the brand and how much you spend. Not sure but if you send me a snapshot I could tell you right off if it has an auto Ir Cut Filter. If it is a BW camera it doesnt matter. Most CCDs will be better than any CMOS camera, Rory

Need to get from one building to another over fiber network

dont get me started on red lights Here, there is not 1 single traffic light that i drive up to where the light just changes green on my side, that someone doesnt run the red light. It just got like that this year, never was before. Local Road Traffic doesnt really do much besides the occasional road block in the same areas. They are stuck on the speeding thing, since this year there have been many deaths. Almost all deaths were where the victims were going 2 miles per hour over the speed limit so ofcourse they were speeding, then again they were also overtaking a few cars with oncoming traffic such as MACK trucks which just killed them instant. My problem was I hit a traffic light that was (as are many others) planted on the road, well 1 inch from the tar. Wrecked the jeep and im still waiting for it -
cant tell you much about the polaris DVR, but they generally sell decent CCTV gear. As for SuperHad, if its a cheap camera, yes it wont see much at night. Exview will see alot more at night, but will pixelise. Depends what you want. I dont know that camera but basically its gotta be OEM, with 40 LEDs, and I doubt it has an IR cut filter so you probably can notice fake colors in day time, especiallly with green like bushes? Most they are good for is sticking in a small room somewhere (indoors). The 1/3" is going to be wider than the 1/4 inch if using the same lens. Rory

Me too, id like to also check out the network software, purchase requirements, and the warranty .. Seriously though let us know if you have a link, if its decent its worth looking at. What was the issue with the other H.264 one again?

yeah its normally 2 or 3 hours a night here too ... red lights ... what are they -
SmartBridges has 54mbps Access Points and Subscriber units, any good? Price isnt bad either.
-
Yeah I hear what you're saying, but for now, since im living down here, and dont have funds to play with, i'd best stick to the ready made units, then maybe over time or if I move to the US, perhaps get more involved in how it works Its enough just keeping up with the DVRs now ..

Then why does Linksys have the same thing the other guys have, 24 port 10/100/1000 ..?

Acti, what i am quoting right now, MPEG-4 ASP, 1-1.5mbps at full D1 30fps. I went through hundreds of sites the other night, with no sleep in 48 hours, and found these products to have the best specs for IP based. I was also looking for a full package deal and came across IndigoVision with the best selection for all the hardware and great software, but possibly at a large price tag. Course you are convetting back to analogue so doesnt matter. Thanks guys, wont be using any fiber in this job, just need enough bandwidth for a local network, main switch needs to handle at least 1 connection with 32 cameras at 1-1.5mbps each. A 10/100 should do it right? Eventually there may be 1 or 2 users that may need to view it over the internet, but for now its internal until I find out more. I figure once its on its own internal network, then if people need to connect to it over the internet, do they connect to that local network also, or just seperate the NVR/DVR on its own connection to the internet? This is all just info I need to take to the client, until I figure out what it is they want to do. As yah can see im lacking in the large network area ... Thanks. Rory
