Hi Ok, im very knowledgeable with computer hardware, software, etc, but, ive never done this, I need to set a lynx DSL/Cable Router to take all incoming requests to a specific IP and send them to the DVR on a specific Port (say 192.168.1.110, where 192.168.1.1 is the first port). Lets say the static Ip is 24.244.155.55 (not real), and I have a DVR and a PC, PC only needs to to browse the web. The admin section is pretty complicated, as to what is to be changed where. I will search tomorrow on Lynx's site to see if the info is there, and ill read their 60 page help PDF, but just checking in to see if anyone has a done this yet. Thanks Rory

There are none here, we have to import everything from Florida and they will never send demos. -

no company in the US is going to lend out their equipment! :-0 Besides, i wouldnt, because if the client hooks it up without a line conditioner, its as good as fried! (at least with our great 3rd world power here -
if you dont need remote video or pc connection, the kalatel VDR is a cheap alternative, and a good brand. Its a Video Digital Recorder, simply just like a time lapse recorder, but longer and higher digital quality, and no tapes, so no maintenance. Its a machine so unlike PC based systems, stable. GOes for $415, same price as a time lapse VCR. Then using a 4 channel mux you can do full screen high quality recording. Just choose a good camera, even if it is not highest resolution. Provideo Bullet Cameras have worked well for me, and are lower costing then a tradiitional or mini dome set camera (CVC-325 - BW Bullet w. sunshield - $150 approx, CVC-625 - Color Bullet w/ sunshield - $check) www.spytown.com and search manufacturers can give you an idea of good pricing. They have alot of different brands listed in case you want to use another. Spytown doesnt have the VDR listed, but others do, better yet find a dealer near you, where are you located?? Rory

Wireless video should only be used as a last resort, and if you do, you should use wireless video transmitters, with proper antennas & receivers, placed high enough and away from anything that can cause interference. http://www.videocommtech.com/index.php?SCREEN=tech_notes Those VEO cameras are not CCTV cameras, and use 802.11b which doesnt gove you much of a range. I agree on the DVR thing, but go for a wired setup where possible.

really need to find a dealer in your neck of the woods. I buy from Ft Lauderdale, Florida as its closest to the Bahamas. www.Spytown.com sells at dealer cost, check it out. I cant say anything about them though as ive never bought from them, but i firstt saw them a year or so ago when searching the web. Still maybe best to buy from a dealer you can go and see physically if required. If you contact a manufacturer that you want to carry products from, like GE for example, they will give you the location of the nearest representative to your location. Rory -
Hi Ive never had a problem installing their software on any windows versions yet, especially windows XP. No they dont have a browser based, not on these DVRs, these are single channels, the newer DVRs do have it installed, but i think it is active X so you still download files. There are actually only 3 or 4 needed files (i know from testing and writing the GUI). I still dont see how you are having an issue, unless another file is in use already that is being installed. I do remember this happening with an earlier version of my software on another computer, which i fixed, was copying a file that XP was already running in the background, where ME/98 never did. Which software gave you the error? WaveVue (mine) or Kalatel's WaveReader (30MB)? It uses port 1024. Rory

Have installed a couple Kalatel RSM-1600's before, pretty cool, but anyone know / had experience with anything else out there in this area, anything new? Ive seen the OZvision one before, but not too much writeups on it on cctv retail sites.

Kalatel's DVRs also can be connected to an external US Robotics Modem, for point to point remote phone line connection, but i was asking mainly about just phone line transmitters, not the DVRs. As for Palm OS, Pocket PC, etc, Kalatel doesnt provide the software for that, BUT, I can make the software myself, if i Had either of them to test with, I have the developers control, which is why i make my own software for them now, for windows ME and XP. WaveReader is one of the best, professional software versions for DVRs i have seen as yet, but i make my own so I can customize the GUI for the client, and have even more features. As for Java, i wouldnt want to run that anyway, not secure. Personally I have java turned off on my PC totally, for security reasons. Ive made an active X browser control for the Kalatel DVRs, but once again, security issues for clients. Also, the DVRs now come with browser software built in.

Hi, no prob man, no i wouldnt hook up a PC DVR card on ME or 98. I dont have any bugs with ME from experience. But with new hardware I use XP because most are designed for XP now. -
Yep, i understand. What host are you using, or going to use for the ASP.net? I switched over to www.discountasp.net hosting from one i was with for several years, and they are great, and low priced. I need an ASP specific host as I write ASP scripts/applications also (did for years, but lately been too busy with other things). I havent moved on to .net yet, as I know classic ASP in and out, so its easier and quicker for me, and I can do anything I want with classic ASP. I understand .net is easier though, so I may move to that soon. Most of my clients dont want to pay for .net hosting yet though, and most still run classic ASP, so thats another reason for me to stick with it. Ofcourse as MS does with everything, they will no doubt stop supporting it at some time in the next coiple years, so we'll have to move to .net anyway. Actually most people i know that are recently new to scripting, like within the last year, started with PhP as they claim it to be easier, im just so used to VB and VBscript now, that perl, php (derived from perl/javascript type code) is like spanish to me. I can understand they are all pretty much the same, just with some different variations of code, but still would need to learn alot and no time to learn anything new in programming right now. Good luck and if you need any classic ASP help in the future let me know. Ive written a full featured search engine in the past , tracking system, etc, so I have tons of 'tough' code lying around in zip files. Rory

Ive installed XP and ME, on a ton of PCs, and XP is still much slower, by more than double. NOW, if you are running it on a 1.7+ Ghz CPU, then ok, anything will run fast, but running on 900Mhz and less, way slower than ME. 2000, the slowest ive seen yet (appart from NT), they hog memory like its going out of style. Ofcourse i use my computers as web servers for writing code and testing it, and win me running PWS is soo much faster than testing on IIS on Xp or 2000. And graphic editing proggies is also faster in ME. XP would never run on this 600Mhz, 128MB Ram, 2GB HD, laptop i am using ME on right now. Id like to run 95, the fastest ever other than DOS and linux etc, if these darn manufacturers hardware would support it! ) -

reminds me of a local electronics company here, that sell some cheap cameras, i told them a price of one of my cameras, and they say they sell theirs for a 1/3rd of the price....but, there is a huge difference between the 2 cameras, mine work and give a great image, whereas they have not even tested theirs yet to see what kind of image it gives, they are only using it inside a shop lights on day and night, and outside the shop in full street lighting! Plus, they only sell 3 cameras, BW, Color, Color w/IR ... quads w/ monitors and VCRs! I could also buy a camera from eclipse cctv for 1/2 the price of theirs also, but it isnt any good! -

yep, yard lights are better, for security also. I tell you one thing, doubt id ever sell the UF500 leds again, way to0 much over kill, they give out IR from 400 feet and more, you can feel the heat standing 15 feet in front of them, and can feel the light on your eyes anywhere within 20-30 feet, but thats the high end LED Bulb, not their 150' Leds which you dont feel anything from. -
yeah, since this post, ive turned away from the ganz product, its probably real good, but a BW version for $450 US Wholesale (including outdoor ceiling mount), compared to $300 for the sanyo and kalatel versions, Id have to stick with the later. Heck they are all 1/4" anyway so i doubt the image will be much better than any other 1/4" ive seen. Actually the cheaper Provideo has 1/3" lens for like $180 BW outdoor Dome (fixed lens though).

ME still is the best OS since 95, for speed. Like all windows OS's, tweaking is a must. I still dont know why everyone doesnt like ME, gives me less problems than 98 ever did, and is faster than XP (and way faster than NT and 2000). I have XP running on a few machines also, tweaked but still cant top the speed of the ME. I guess some people like having to install 50 security patches to XP, not me! ) -

All are more expensive here in the US side of the world. The stand alone DVRs here are primarily designed for industrial applications while the PCcards are geared towards budgets and home users. -

That is cheap, but either way, its not the type of Infrared you get with ExtremeCCTV products. Ive used the IR bullets from Provideo, a litle more expensive than $69, and they dont see very far, if any, outdoors in pitch dark. I would never use them again for Infared Applications. -

rory replied to spiritgide's topic in General Digital Discussion
In the IR area, ive installed the extreme IR products, and they really do work But yes, they are expensive, and wear some shades when you install / test them at night! But only use IR if you really have to. The IR bullet cameras, normally have 6-24 IRs, dont really work, at least outside. Tehy barely give you 15 feet of LED and its limited. With the Extreme LED products, you can see objects defined out to 100+ feet. Not the best pic, as it was taken with Flash on from a digital camera, but it can give you an idea. Using IR lighting is nothing like using yard lights though as the yard lights will give you a much better image, no matter how much IR Light you have, as IR light can give off alot of glare on certain objects. Image shown below is actually 100' pool area in pitch dark, using Extreme CCTV's Ex82 ($1250) day night camera with LEDs. I also installed a day night sanyo camera in a regular housing, with 2 Extreme UF500 Infrared LEDs, amazing image in pitch dark (dont have a picure of that yet, none are online yet). -

Which DVR has the best features?
rory replied to cctv_down_under's topic in General Digital Discussion
Most Polular Per the internet stores: Stand Alones: Kalatel Dedicated micros Everfocus(arghh, heard not that good software, but cheap) PC Based: DigiVue Most Polular Per this Forum Members: Geovision (PC Based) Vitek CCVT DVRs (stand alone) Kalatel DVRs (Stand Alone) Alnet DVRs (new submission - awaiting test info) As far as reputation goes, id have to say looking at how long they have been around, reviews on the web etc, Kalatel, Dedicated Micros, and Geovision, probably have the best reputation. BUT, that doesnt mean they ARE the best, or that you should go with them, there are others, AND other new DVRs coming out every day. Im just going by what is out there in reviews, sales, links etc, on the internet so far. Ive yet to test the Alnet, Phillps, Pelco, Sony, Vicon, Teleplex, Provideo, or even the lower priced Everfocus. If ive left one out PLEASE let me know! Rory -
