I didnt see any improvement with a 1/2 inch lens camera over a 1/3 inch, which i ended up switching the camera to. I used a 1/3 inch lens on the 1/2 inch camera and it looked the same quality as with a 1/2" lens on the 1/2" camera, except the focal lenghts were different, you could not get a wide angle without a peephole type of image.

yes, but I wouldnt use XP, use 2000 instead if you must use a PC based system.
-
yeah I know, but if they want to see directly below or near the camera, then they need at least a 4mm, but then they wont see as the persons face beyond 50' thats what Im trying to find out, what is the normal distance, say using a 4mm lens then. I know with my 3.6mnm bullet I cant make out a persons face 'clear' beyond like 30 feet.

yeah but if the person is 50' from the camera, or lets say 75' using a 4mm lens then its hard to see their face. What im asking is regardless of which focal length used, say if youare using a 8-10mm and they are 125' away, there is a limit to how far the camera will see. What im asking is what is the normal distance that you can capture a face from the start of the lens focal length? Like if the clients should have say 3 cameras but only want 2, but with 2 they will not see as much/far as they could using 3.

yeah, im looking for a device now that acts like the no ip software, for the stand alone DVR, anyone seen anything like this, so I dont have to leave the computer on all the time.
Thanks

I viewed one of their software, probably was the PC based one, wasnt that great, but it wasnt bad also. I like the look of that mini Kodicom Stand alone 4 channel DVR, and US pricing on that anywhere, i searched google but cant find a price.
Thanks

as a general rule, what is the farthest distance you can make out a persons face at, using different lenses? i was thinking maybe 50' max no matter what lens, from the start of the lens focal point, at the center of the lens?

yeah thanks, I got it a while back, working with routers with port forwarding, works great and saves me the extra $100 for cable that they want for another IP..

does he mean what software controls the boards, or what the programming is that is on the board?
-
yeah there is also noIP.com, its free and does the same, you run a small program on your computer which monitors it.
But then you need to leave a computer on 24/7, for stand alones it is annoying. Does anyone know if there isa seperate device that will do this?

ok thanks. I reviewed their software but it doesnt look very impressive
But it the price is good then its good for me
Yes, direct is pretty expensive all around, ill check out vsscctv.
got up at 6.30 am this morn for a change (normally 9.30) to clean my appartment and busted my head open on a pump room roof (blood and all covered my face so much i couldnt see! and right now its a huge bump & cut), while filling bucket with water, didnt realise it was so low, anyway, right here curing it with some bud light! I always get injured when I mop, last time i stepped on a nail!!
-
yeah i guess
the storesafe since kalatel was taken over by GE was loadedwith features though, but more are needed like:
fps/pps status on remote view
more than 1 audio input
removable HDs (though they probably use SCSI HDs)
built in DVD-RW (instead of CD-RW)
USB/Flash Back up & or back up to PC with firewire cable etc
any more ideas, I can pass it on to them for review, or at least they pass it on to someone else in that dept. Im sure they will eventually come out with some if not all or more than these, but like you said it may take some time. I just like the easy install and stability, and it has all the features my clients need, for now!
Alot of it is software related to remote video though.

yep, there are ofcourse other factors that may cause problems. Im talking about very short distances, all cameras in the same room (retail store). Normally I only use the Altronix Fused Power Supplies, unless I have a very long run which will use its own power supply near the camera.
Just saying I didnt have a problem with the '1' job i used a single 2a power supply 15-18 V for those messed up cheapo kmart type cameras! Then again i wouldnt even throw them in the same catagory as CCTV!

anyone know the price on nuvico DVRs?
and any good.

Spytown pushes alot of different brands, great catalog actually, but then can also cause us resellers to loose some sales!
Let me know how it goes, Ive never ordered through them but always use them for pricing ideas. If it goes well, I may buy from them in the future. Would be good to know if they carry lot of stock they sell, and.or how long it takes to get shipped.
Thanks

Im really not into asian products, but I liked the look of the Kodicom min DVR with built in LCD
Anyone know the price on that?

I would kill for a good US company that we could wrap our arms around and have some protection. BUT, its all going to come down to software. Who has the best? That’s up for debate.Well you could make your own software for some of the name brands.
-
one power supply for all cameras will not cause a problem, once you use a high enough amps for the number of cameras you have.
Rory
-
yes, their software is 100% better.

i have only seen something like this:
http://www.vsscctv.com/ProductDetail.asp?ProductID=1169
Also, some manufacturers sell demo equipment, such as Kalatel, they have Demo PTZ Stands with the camera and controller, or Demo DVR kits, such as the DVR, a camera and a small LCD.

some of the all in one quad camera kits (kmart type) use 15volts. They use telephone wire and not cat 5. Check your camera type and make sure it doesnt require more power, ive never heard of 9 volt for a camera also.
I was given the horrible job of hooking up one of these last year, to a real crappy PC based DVR system, with no name and no manual for anything. It had already been installed in the previous store, and they just wanted it moved, but it was not even working at the previous store due to improper connections. Anyway, I ended up just splicing the tel wire, power and ground all went to one 2a 15-18v power supply. The ground was actually the ground from each cameras video ground, only way it would work! So basically out of the 4 wires in a 2 pair telephone wire, it uses red for positive, yellow for video, black for ground and green for audio. audio only used 1 wire also. (i may have the colors mixed up just from memory, but it was something to that affect).
Ill never touch that kind of thing again, but i needed the extra cash and they didnt want to spend anymore than labour at the time. All that splicing was annoying, but taped etc as neat as possible. another thing they were running windows 98 and doing accounting, POS and word on the same machine so it crashes often!! You can only suggest, can not make them upgrade.

Actually the Kalatel Storesafe all-in-one DVR does all of the below, see my notes:
1. Ease of setup - YES
2. COST, you can get a 16 channel with remote, audio, etc for 675.00
MUCH MORE THAN THAT - LIKE $4000+
3. Little post sale support - PLENTY OF SUPPORT BOTH WAYS
4. Quality, you can get better real world recording out of the 720x480 in my opinion. - YES
1. Advanced features such as email on motion - YES, Email Notification is built in, on alarm
2. no http server - YES -Http Server is built into it for browser access
3. no dynamic IP support - YES - dynamic IP is supported
4. Remote software sucks. - NO - Software is better than most PC based
You can do burners no - YES - CDRW built in - or DVRRW on your PC using remote software
ad HDDs, - NO - this is my only problem with them, besides the high cost

BTW, you just posted a web site i never checked out yet!
(camerasuperstore)
thats a different market though. (pelco, Sanyo, Kalatel, Sony, etc). I get those kalatel products cheaper from my distributor in Miami, than on that camerasuperstore web site).

that would be the DVR o42, goto recorders, than DVRS.I really feel bad even mentioning our company, but I really believe in our prices. I know all the competition. camerasuperstore, intellicam, supercircuits, etc.
I knew someone would be pissed off that I worked for a company, but I am just trying to support my young wife and child, and I do believe we have the best pricing in the biz on stand alone DVRS. And a good selection.
Anyways,
< ben >
thats a good price. how many do I have to buy to get that price? Would like to order 1 to demo first.
thanks
Rory
edited; does it have a manufacturer name, or is it no name, dont need to know the name right now, just wondering? thanks
