  1. I really have limited O/S experience and the pace of CCTV here is still rather slow, I would have liked a chance to make big money.

If you ever want to come here, there is a job for you running my business

I know you are speaking to allan, but myself I may take a trip there this year to say hello anyway:-)) My brother can get me 'buddy' passes as he works with Delta Airlines, which makes it very cheap airfare.

I need a vacation, at least if I get the couple large jobs Im quoting right now...

    Rory

  2. yes you get better quality with a traditional type camera, because of the better quality lens, and they normally have more settings taht can be adjusted.

Mini domes or bullet cameras have micro lenses or some mini varifocal, which are OK, but a full sized lens can give a better image, along with the better board in the traditional camera itself.

Ok for my education now, since i do not use these types of cameras yet, can you explain why and when you would use a lens with an auto iris that is dc driven or video driven and what is the difference?

In my cams that are sealed I know there is a little servo that seems to do the work but I set nothing or adjust nothing, so perhaps this is video driven?

At some point i guess i will be doing the inside of a shop/showroom and i supppose that a convential box cam will give the best shot?

Most of my units are 1/4 imagers. What do we gain by 1/3 imagers? Am I correct in understanding that we need more light at 1/3?

All my units have been dc powered and I have no problems with line lock or sync and I do not undrstand why this is a problem or is it with ac cameras?

    I appreciate the education

    Thanks

    Larry

  3. a whole wealth of leanring in 3 paragraphs!

    Some good info.

All new lenses of the varifocal type are now DC driven. Video driven lenses are pretty much history. Generally they were in 2/3" or 1/2" format. Just make sure you have the switch on the camera in the DC position when using an auto iris lens. You can tell the difference by looking at the barrel of the lens. Video driven lenses have two small screw pots in the barrel which are used for adjusting the light range of the lens. DC driven lenses have no such screw pots because the adjustments are in the camera not on the lens. When using an auto iris lens make sure you turn off the camera's auto light adjustment or the lens and the camera will fight each other for control of the lighting. Unless your camera has an unusually good light range you will need to use an auto iris lens for outdoor scenes so it can properly adjust for the brightest daylight light to the lowest nighttime light. Also make sure you adjust the focus at night, or fool the camera into thinking it is dark by using dark filters in front of the lens.

As far as 24vac or 12vdc in line lock, that was only important when using switchers, rarely used these days. Quads, Multiplexers, DVRs, all automatically compensate for out of sync camera signals. Just make sure with either 24vac or 12vdc that you have enough current at the camera or your signal will be very weak. More problems with weak current happen with 12vdc mainly because people use low current power supplies while most 24vac power supplies are very robust.

These days there is almost no difference in quality between 1/3 and 1/4 inch cameras. If you use a varifocal lens then you will almost always be able to find the right focal length.

  4. sad thing it is, the video surveillance may have helped capture the murderer, but unforunatey did not help save her life, though the camera can only do so much.

Does anyone know what technology they used to enhance the video image, just curious? Anyone know what DVR was being used, compression type etc??

Condolences go out to the family and the girl who lost her life at such a young age.

  5. Softwrae please... just need to be able to show the search screen.

the only units I can access right now are the 1 channel with Muxes, they dont show events on the disk analyis, and dont have alll the search features as the all in ones / storesafes/ DVMRes, but this may help right now:

  6. Rory I need a screen shot of the search bar from the Kalatel as I need to recommend this feature to some programmers, can you send one to my email?

Also next time you email them ask them who is the Australian Distributor for me, there is a lot of confusion as to who does it.

    Regards,

screen shot, from the software, or the actual DVR?

I just emailed them will let you know as soon as I find out.

  7. I am pretty sure we tried them, probably have the card in the whare house if you want it.. From memmory the use a flash type O/S they send you the cards and a small flash device with their O/S on it and that plugs into an IDE cable, It is a small blue device, you may check their site and see if this is the case.. please let me know, I tested them ages ago, was VERY stable I could not veen make it crash by trying everything, but the softwrae was very junky. This was a long time ago though.

    I hope this helped

so it doesnt require a Windows PC or Linux PC??

  9. Thanks I was going to use 1 in 4 out amps 3 or 4, do you have a link to 4 in 8 out?

For the cameras link is down but Video Security Inc VDI from TW. I like their line so far for the barns I have done. Can be prchased thru a number of places including cctv imports etc.

Price is always important. I use sealed cams, no enclosures, fixed lenses most 2.6 mm 1/4 and 1/3 imagers, no I/r,

I am trying to use 420/480 line color and 600 line b/w. i have used some 380 line for clients who need it but cannot afford it. Saddlebrook Barn Cams and Rosigol blow me away on single camera jobs, but i cannot get across to clients we play with different things, you fellas are lucky playing with higher end clients. Farms never have any money for stuff like what you guys do.

My bigest project to date, 10 cameras on same farm over 5 miles, wireless to houses, 4 repeaters so either brother can see any barn. I am playing with above avg power levels though, 1 watt at 2.4 Clients are pleased as can be.

Never anything over the net as most are dialup and no computers wanted.

    Thanks for the advice

    Larry

    Thanks for the help guys.

    Larry

Interesting, never guessed barn video surveillance could be such a demanding thing, but then again, its a business like anything else.

For point to point phone line transmission, check out Kalatel RSM-1600 (sarh google, they are everywhere for sale). You can use 2, 1 on either end, and just connect to a TV on remote end, no PC required.

    Rory

  10. Haven't heard of VDI. Do you have a link for them? Here is a link that has several low cost cameras with LED IR's which last forever (well almost).

They are also weather resistant so you could have them outdoors or in a barn type application. Also a link to another interesting product that could have applications for a barn to detect intruders.

yep, actually I have some cheap provideo cameras with purple LEDs, that have been working and still are, after over a year and a half.

So they generally last a long time even the cheaper ones. I think its maybe the spot Bulbs that run out after a while??

    Rory

  11. cool, dont forget your 12v / 24v power supplies, and bnc/rca adaptors, or connectors, but they are cheap, andd can get them locally anyway.

Video comm only makes wireless, thats their specialty, so they will be much better, but yes, more expensive. They use 12v also.

  12. hey, hey

When you get housings, you gotta go PELCO, nothing else, expecially if you have a high rate of vandalism.

Rory, I'm going to send GE an e-mail to hire you as a sales consultant

actually, pelco housings are overrated, emi has better for vandal proof.

but check out this site, the best line of housings available, and unlike pelco AND others, they actually look good!

    http://www.videotec.com

but unless I need vandal proof, I just use the manufacturer of the cameras housings, like kalatels as they look nice, and are water sealed, i have mine on the ocean here.

  13. Cool. Just a little more work and i'll be able to have this thing laid out.

How about those MVL-10 units for wireless transmission? http://www.supercircuits.com/STORE/prodinfo.asp?number=MVL10-WR&variation=&aitem=2&mitem=21

The videocomm units appear to be really expensive. They aren't quoted much online (i assume that they are not authorized to post online).. but from the prices i saw, it was much more than the MVL-10.

Also, the MVL-10 operates at 12V, which makes sense (whereas the videocomms run at 9v, which hardly makes sense).

I noticed that the toshiba IK-644A has just about the same spec's as the IK-6400A, but the 6400-A doesn't appear to be listed on the Toshiba website (indicating that it is discontinued). The 644A is 40 bucks more, and it just might be worth it. at this price i could move over to the Everfocus EQ500 ($195). The specs appear very similar to the toshiba units. The one "plus" is that the Everfocus operates at 12V, just like the MVL-10 transmitter. I assume that i would have to get either 2 power supplies or a voltage regulator to run the 24V toshiba in tandem with the MVL-10 (If it ain't one thing, its another!).

So, for the peace of mind of it all, the Everfocus is at the top of my list. I would like to look deeper into the issue before i commit, though.

Video comm only makes wireless, thats their specialty, so they will be much better, but yes, more expensive. They use 12v also.

gotta run, there is a bush fire next door! really, took fire truck 20 minites they just turned up.

  14. cool. actually, i am one of those yagi nerds who likes to make my own antennas- so if I have an issue i'll probably take pleasure in playing with some sort of omnidirectional design I have already built for 2.4GHz. I even have some friends who are yagi ubernerds who can probably get me antennas that are more 'professional' (e.g. not made from a Yuban container) for pretty cheap. Of course if my experiments fail I would go the traditional route and buy one

I'm also trying to figure out how the add-on lens prices are expensive? I looked around and within 10 bucks those seem to be the going rate (5-50mm is $80-115, 3.9-8mm is $35-60 more or less). I also have no idea if i'm getting a decent brand (or if it matters).

computar, tamron, or fujinon are good brands of lens. Fujinon is my personal choice but costs more than tamron, but have smaller physical sizes.

Also, make sure you get a good housing also, Kalatel has some good weatherproof housings, cost around $81 with a sunshield. Any other good brand, pelco, etc, around that price range, is good. Stay away from $20 housings, they dont stand up well against rain etc.

EMI also has some good vandal proof housings, stainless steel etc.
