I have sold Geovision and tried Huper Labs and my thoughts are that Geovision has a better all round software, i would not at all be surprised that Huper had some ex Geo employees (at least at one stage) because they were at one point coming out with awesome new features, they were one of the first with auotgain and they had some kind of night vision feature and lots of other features. The pricing was enough to look at the system, but it looked very flakey on seraching and on motion detection and this worried me. Geovision has all the features but the problem is that not many people actually have a need for all of those features! Overall I give the Geo about 7.5 out of 10 and the Huper a 6!

Laugh all you like AV, however I doubt that will be the going rate when this site keeps growing at the rate it has, to have 1500 members after 2 years without any serious advertisement in any trade magazines etc, is an indication that perhaps 4000 by year three and maybe 8000 or 10,000 by year four. This amount of traffic would lead to some fairly reasonable prices to be charged for advertisement and I think quite obviously a fairly good re-sale value (which is obviously more important). Just imagine if you bought the domain and made a nice internet drop ship wholesale company to put in it's place, wouldn t that be nice especially after we are all being asked to link to this site from other sites. I am not saying this is why larry did this and I am first to take my hat off to him for GIVING something to the industry, however I do feel that larry does realise that he will EVENTUALLY make quite a bit of money from this domain. The point I was trying to make is that the reason some people left the forum appeared to be personality clashes more than them loosing interest and although that will always happen, perhaps if these IMPORTANT people are actually noticably missing then it may be wise to prevent further occurrances and I suggest showing some of the loyal people that have helped in this endevour some assistance that may make them contribute more to the overall success of the forum. After making my original post i thought...maybe I shouldnt have and I really didn feel all that strongly about what I was actually saying, but I do think it has some reference. There are many people in here that have sold equipment through this site that they would not have been able to do if it did not exist and luckily it is usually the guys that have contributed, all I say is why not link to the guys that help the most so that they can have a need to want to help more. I know I have explained things a few times over on several subjects and sometimes you really just get sick of typing the same thing again and again (unless of course you are Rory), but I feel that if I had gained a small something I would be even more helpfull than I am now. I help regardless as many do in here but I think even more EXPERTS may come out of the closet if we offered incentives to allow it to happen. I welcome your thoughts. -
Actually that is really good point

That is correct Chew! In fact the old style is exactly the same, the simple fact is you have to control left, right up and down and zoom in and zoom out, previously you bought a motor that did the movement of the camera and then you put your camera on it and mounted a zooming lens that was also controlled in the same mannor, there were few joysticks and you had a button for each control and a BLOODY wire for each option. Nowadays they build it into one unit and they usually use a voltage variance to drive the motor of the pan tilt head and the lens etc etc, some even do it up the coaxial cable Coaxatron and Bilinx spring to mind. You do still see the old style cams sometimes these days as you may need a PTZ to look upwards (airports etc) and then you revert back to the old style. Simply put, by the time you buy a zoom lens (and focus it) and a pan and tilt head as well as a controller and an enviromental enclosure it would have been cheaper to buy a speed dome as a kit!

To Larry, From reading as many posts as I have had time to read, I think that some valued members left this forum for reasons other than just being too busy, it would seem that there were some personality clashes between individuals that caused these people to leave. I wanted to post in the http://www.cctvforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=3520&highlight= but you closed that off so I will post here. This is the BEST forum I have ever seen and it's information is without doubt one of the best CCTV resources that you can get and it is indeed free, it is a credit to you that you built this forum when trying to find an answer to a problem that you had and not finding it on the net. I personally use the net to answer any questions I have and if I possesed your skills then I would have done the same thing, being able to define a need and then thinking that others may have the same need is displays a keen business mind. I am however not STUPID, this is an excellent investment for you and now that you are charging for advertisement it will reap the benefits that you and others have sewn, this will become an excellent earning device for you. I am not concerned that you will make money from this because I firmly believe that you deserve it, in fact I would be more than happy to donate some HDD's to you or even make a small donation through pay pal etc to help you to keep this site running. It may sound silly to offer HDD's however this is a real cost and i think Larry would actually agree with me they are usefull. If only 500 members gave you $5 each, you could quickly start to build up the site. I respect that you removed this competitiors site from yours and why would you promote it, however I ask that you (or someone else) PM the site to me as I would like to make my own informed judgement on it and although I respect your removal of the information I think it important to let others look around. Larry, your site has grown and will continue to do so my only suggestion is that YOU can not afford to loose good people as they are what keeps the site from turning into yet another Yahoo Flame site. It is these individuals that stop arguments and get the topic back on track, however a few of your major posters may seem a little BIASED in their opinions. A business idea is only as good as its original plan, once that is copied, then the person with the most cash usually wins, therefore I think you will need to act fast to ensure your resources stay with you. Perhaps you should provide a smaller (much smaller) banner that rotates between some of the companies that have helped you with intelligent resource in order to grow your business or perhaps a map with countries recommending installers that you know are reputable this can be available to all visitors (ie those that have not registered) or can be sent as an attachment after registration with contact details etc As for me I am happy to hang around and I enjoy it very much, I would however like to be able to see the other site for reference. You have created a very nice vehicle, however your fuel resource needs to be sustained and it s what keeps your vehicle moving, forums always lose members, however good ones can often be the reason many people stay! -

Dedicated DVRs vs PC BASED DVRs
cctv_down_under replied to washlogix's topic in Digital Video Recorders
Wash, be carefull this is a evry loaded question and can have much debate and prolly will. I disagree that standalones are as easy to upgrade, I agree that people think they can not be upgraded when they can, but only the software can be upgraded, for example if compression chips change, you can very easily change a simple PCI card in your PC but you can not do this for a standalone. Standalone's are much more stable and they (on average) have slower frame rates and less features, however there are "Real Tim" versions out there, but in essence they are really just stripped down PC's. As far as good software goes, they are both fairly stable since embedded XP, but my simple rule of thumb is: A) If the install is a long way away, it is a standalone without question!! b) If the person shows any sign of being a compute know it all, it is a standalone once again. C) If I need to really impress the person it is going to be a PC d) If I know they will want to upgrade later then again it will be a PC. Standalones give you less headaches but PC's are MUCH easier to sell! -
Video Conference
cctv_down_under replied to loop's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Do you need the cam to be able to move? If not why not a simple MPEG2 webserver, the reason that I suggest MPEG2 is that MPEG2 encodes the video and audio into one stream and therefore has not latency, you could use the alarm input on the webserver to activate to a decoder box when button is pushed. -
I know this may sound silly, but I remember hearing about a similar problem, I think it was because (and do not ask me why) you need to connect the RS232 cable that comes with the webserver, the one they conveniently didnt solder for you, to your dvr if you are using both AVTECH devices, I know this is probably not your issue however, like I said i rmemeber a similar problem.

Need to get from one building to another over fiber network
cctv_down_under replied to jisaac's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
I know it is probably mentioned above, but what are the distancess in Meters that you are trying to get the video signal through, obviously you can transmit video on fibre with fibre modems so long as you have spare fibers and dependant on the type of fibre you can go to very long distances. using distribution amps will allow long runs and using a camera like the Bosch XF will allow you 700 meters on standard RG59 cable. What si the distance you need to cover and why do you want to sue a web encoder instead of a fibre modem? -
I have to admit with Rory, that 4ch DVR he has there will do the trick or you could really buy a AVTECH version very cheaply, I think you should consider a much better camera. IMHO the bullet cameras with IR built in are no good for anything less than a few meters. I would get a good day night camera with IR photocell that can adjust the IR filter, I would then use some good extreme IR flood lights and I would try to hide your work so that he does not knwo it is there. If he always jumps the fence then make your camera look along it, even if he does other stuff, tresspasing will be enough to get a restraining order and using just 1 or 2 cameras should bring your pricing down.

most casinos havea standard requirement for 25fps in MPEG2 is this what this device does? -
Actually I have used all three, I would be interested to see which models you have tried from GE as the ones i used were not even CLOSE to the same ballpark as Pano and Bosch, as for IR lenses I am sorry but once again I have to disagree, IR corrected lenses are NEEDED if used with IR ligt as the camera can see this range and therefore will throw the field of view out if it adjusts iris settings, most lenses these days aare treated with IR protection aswell, i can not say that IR lenses are not worth it!

cctv_down_under replied to jisaac's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Isnt there any spare fibers? -
The 15 bit does mean quite a bit, most cameras are 10 bit and can not see as many light levels or colours as a 15 bit camera. To give you an idea a 15 bit camera can see a full 10,000 light levels and close to 1,000 colour ranges And a 10 bit camera can only see 512 light levels and only 100 colour ranges. These images are only to demonstrate the concept, but you would be more than happy with any 15bit camera and the LTC 0495 has won the NSCA’s 2005 Innovations in Technology award in the Security/Fire/Life Safety category this year, however the SDIII is also aan awesome camera and I have used plenty of both, as for the GE range they are quite good but not even in the same catagory as the two mentioned above. It would seem that Bosch and Panasonic copy each others features and this is leading towards some excellent competition allowing us to get some awesome products in the market place. As for your lenses CBC (Computar) are awesome lenses, but if your going to use a Panasonic or Bosch camera that has a Day Night Filter I suggesst you choose an aspherical and IR Corrected lense. I agree the Bosch branded lenses are excellent, however I do not think they make them as they are very similar to other brands I have purchased before and Cosmica are quite good as well as Fujinon.
