    connecting dvr to pc

Whoa nelly, loads to consider here, if I have time tonight over a beer or 6 I will send you a reply about it, I wreally should do a walkthrough easy to follow guide.. but firstly, are you using a hub or a router at all or have you just joined cable to the two inputs for netwroking on the PC and the DVR, also is it a standard cable or a cross over cable.. and if you think I am speaking gibberish then it might pay to wait until I do the help post.. I am waiting for larry to do sticky's then we can keep it up there for others to read.

    Need DVR recommendation

No Geo uses many per app, the difference is that you can chnage them to anything you want, think of it as having a house with many doors, you could go in the front door but you could also go in the side door, or you can place the door anywhere you want, basically you make the port you want on the DVR for each app and then set your router to this port, i would be surprised if Kodicom PC Cards did not offer this.. for example some ISP's will block port 80 as up traffic, this is designed to stop you hosting a website or broadcasting to take up bandwidth, you could easilly change your port to 81 instead, a further example is some of the ports used just for one app for example the web cam app by default uses these ports from memory 4550 5550 6550 21 80 For example.. the port 80 allows direct web access, 21 provides FTP to web location, 6550 is for audio transfer, but you could easily change those ports to anything you wanted as long as at the other end on the remote software you change them as well. be carefull though, some cheap routers do not allow you to use more than a certain number of ports so you can get caught out here, good routers allow you to make new port openings by way of making new routing rules, kind of like adding new doors to the house. If you can not change the ports on a DVR, some standalones I am learning have this problem, then you will have complicated set ups when trying to put multiple DVR's on one network, for example if you wanted to connect to two DVR's behind one router and could not change them from the default port 80, the router would have no idea how to route to any particular device so you need to change one to port 81 and one to port 82, a common practice is to make the second device up 10 or 100 ports or 1 port, for example 80,6550,5550,4550 and 21 might now be 81, 6551, 5551, 4551 and 22. Mind you that does make it a little obvious, but thats what firewalls were invented for right!!

    audio

I have heard these are good, some DVr PC Cards have an optional 16 input audio card and most have a few channels of audio already built in. Regards, GC

    Bought a GV900-16

I don not like to sell overseas for this reason, I could have sold you the card even cheaper, but all that would have done, as you are already aware is piss off your distributor, distributors offer support, thats why you pay more, USUALLY the more you pay, the more support you get. i hate selling overseas and wish you had not told your local distributors as this may cuase somewhat of a headache with Geo, not that they really mind..after all your not really a diostributor and they were prepared to sell to you. I kept my price up to protect the larger distributors, bloody wish US would not sell here so cheap as they do, i have only ever sold to people in the forum for this reason. I honestly do not have that much to do with the cards any more as I am in Mangement and Sales not building the machines, but the only chips that should have had stickers on them are the dongle chips, and they should either be 900-xxxSP or 900-xxxS1, I am not convinced you got a legit card but would be very interested to see it, very hard to say without seeing it. Perhaps you can post a picture or two! As for the interface, i have to admit it sucks and stupid Geo will not change it, but mostly just looks, I have tried many many many and I do mena many types of product and software and although the GUI and layout sucks, I am yet to see a better formed piece of software. What file did the manual ask you to execute (like I said before I do not have much to do with the cards) it is highly possible that you recieved a version of the softwrae that is new and an old manual, Geo release new software all the time, but not new manuals, i am betting that this is the issue, but I would like to know, strange though of all the thousands of cards I have sold, no one has brought this point up to me, so would be very interested to find out! Support comes from good distributors...and that is what you pay for! They know what to look out for. As for the cost of the cards, let me tell you this, they are dirt cheap, you do not pay for the card, you pay for the software, we almost looked at writing our own, but the cost to stay on top is immense, that is what you ar paying for, you are paying for the level of programming and devleopment and that costs a lot of money indeed, i am not justifying their pricing, it is indeed insane when you know hardware, especially if you have dealt with PC Hardware before and know the costings of manufacture...but software development is very expensive and Geo can hardly fall short there. As for paying $200 for chips, I really hope you are talking about the whole card, there should bve no charge for extra chips or to change to upgrade to S1 chip for version 6.1, but if your point is that these are cheap chips on the card, I agree, but once again your not paying for the hardware. I would like to see the card, sounds al a bit funny if your paying seperate for the chips, I am assuming dongle chip, I would also love to know what price that you were offered from both your local guy Texas and Geo, if you have time PM me it would be evry interesting, the prices I gave you are APPARENTLY the prices geo would have offered to you if you went direct, thats why I do not go lower than that otherwise distributors get really pissed off! Regards, GC

    Jumpin' Jack Flash ?

Not sure about the all black then white problem, bu the jumping pictures could be due to a few things... 1/ did you install direct X9a before installing the Geo Software? 2/ Is it possible your system is not powerfull enough...cpu power or video card, when overloading a CPU this can happen but is indeed rare, best way to check is to only have one camera connected and do not record it and see if still persists, 3/ Quite possible you have power coming back through the Coax, makes sense if you have a camera playing up, is it always the same camera? can you dis connect onew by one each camera and see if problem stops. 4/Make sure you are not recording to the C: drive, you could be strangling the O/S and making the system work too hard. Hope this helps, GC

It will ave it at DVR ned, and in router and for all apps, obviously web cam is slightly different. so need to add the extension as before, just means typing 2 extra numbers every time for example.. instead of 202.134.555.86 you would type 202.134.555.86:81

    multi-NAT routers / firewalls

Yes.. you change each apps port number at the DVR end, then you map those ports at the router and when connecting from an app or browser simply change the ports on app or browser.

I know, I know your company well, but they sell to anyone, but similar to Geo, not same price to anyone, I dont have any problems with any manufactorers selling to anyone as long as trade and they promise to keep pricing levels on quantity basis

The other funny thing is I always hear "But whom needs these features" from people who don't have them, never from people who have them and they always seem to appear very quickly in the market after Geo releases them. they are smart, only way they can justify and keep their price is to make better software and increase demand, and best way to get money back is to make distributors fight for it, then it gets sold wiht low margin brionging down the price of the product and making it competitive. Very clever buggers Geo, they are just about to list on stock exchange as well, extra money will make them more powerfull.. clever ol asians those ones. mind you there ethics suck!

not sure anymore they never used to make them, but I am not sure anymore, I think they just buy them, but made special for them.. I agree with hehder not many are used if any, but lots of cheaper less impressive stuff used to be sold but they all now sell geo.. like you said everyone sells it, hay Iw as one of the very first, back when inspector wiggum was one of the buttons. fact is people liek to buy all the options even if not needed, hay I had a car with heated seats once, never needed here, but bugger it sounded good at the sale and was nice to show it off every now and then, mind you I could have bought a Hyundai.
