    XP Pro SP2

You can use it but you need to know what your doing, if you turn on firewall after SP2 install then you need to forward ports like you did on that router, you also need to go to internet explorer optionsd and allow active x controls or the web browser will not work, alos have to kill the pop up killer, mind you this is nto needed in 6.1. Overall i like what they ahve done, but the layman will have problems with it, lets face it, not many people even know that explorer has levels of security or even options, so this brings a whole new headache, in short, if your handy with PC's use it if not then dont, if your not using a hardware firewall, I would do it as the security is excellent and they managed to close a lot of vulnarabilities,,, bastards though, stops me doing a lot of stuff that I used to be able to do due to vulnarabilities. You really do not need it unless you are not behind a a true firewall.

    Geo's and Celerons??

Actually there is a Celeron that my techs call P4 celeron, aparently it does have the extra level of cache, but I do not believe that. I am sure thomas would know, the heating issue would be tru that clerons run cooler, but not by that much and P4's ar hardly hot machines, unless you overclock them to buggery, I could fry and egg on mine easy. Trutrh is adequate cooling should be in the case anyway and I havent heard of too many P4's overheating ion standard conditions, the reason your supplier has done this is to cut costs, bad Idea!!!! it is much cheaper to do Celeron and althought it will run ok on 8000 cards, you will see a drop in perfomance and especially a drop in frame rate.. one rule of thumb with a Geo, ALWAYS scope it high, becuase you will ALWAYS want the new software, personally i would not build a cleron machine at all excepting for 600 series and 650 series DVR's but all that will happen is yopu will record at a lower speed, but upgrading your software will be a BIARCH if not powerfull enough and after getting the Beta for 6.1 and now the OFFICIAL relaase, I would certainly not use a Celeron machine, way under powered for 6.1. Easiest way to prove my point is to set hte machine to continuous recording then hit CTRL ALT DELTE and have a look at the perfomance section under windows task manager, you wills ee on your machine that the CPU usuage will be at 100%, working it really hard, CPU's are made by speeds and a little know fact is that the speed of your CPU is defined by how well it performed under testing, so a 2 CPU just dint run stable at 2.4 so they backed it down and made it a 2 to sell it, actually I am such a nerd that I overclock and test my CPU's before I choose which one I want for home, because it may well be much more powerfull. Personally I would not touch the celeron for a 800 system but it will run ok wiht older software and will just slip a few frames, but for the extra cost, hay spend the money, as for building them yourself, now that is another headache entirely. hope this helps GC

    Broadband router problem

Thomas is right, you will need to add the rules first or you could change the DVr to suit the ones you already have, you will also need to forward 6550 and 21 depending on whether you want audio and FTP ability, If your using SP2 make sure to forward these in windows firewall if you allowed it and also turn on active X at the internet explorer options,, oh yeh the ports are TCP.. PM me the I.P when you get it done, woiuld love to take a look.

Security Camera to see mare foaling

Wow poor guy must be so confused, my two cents worth, I can imaginer you being happy with a wireless soluytion without having a direct line of sight and a really good quality equipent, so first you need to decide on Cable, you really have two choices here, either RG59 cable or Fibre optic cable, the RG59 you may be able to do your self but if the distance between camera and end point is say over 130Mtr you may need to amplify it witha powered box. Amplification keeps the signal balanced, this means that runs over 130 Mtrs (oh and yes I know some cables are rated for more and some for less) can be amplified to keep the signal working for you, so picture quality is good, Purchasing Fibre Optic will require you to gets ome person to SPLICE it for you, Splicing is making joins in Fibre, why choose fibre, well fibre will not get any interfernce and will not require amplification, you will need a transmitter and reciever fior the fibre, your guy that you bring in to do the splicing can handle that for you, however if you use RG59 you will not need it. Ir Illumintation really comes in several ways, the first is little kit cameras that have tiny led's in them and they will push out IR lighting, these are utterly useless for what you are trying to achieve, as the area they will illuminate will not be satisfactory for your requirements. The second lot are not built into cameras and are usually ina beam type aray, these can be excellent if used with a camera that supports IR light, but be carefull some animals are affected by IR lighting as they have an different sensitivities to us, alos if you choose IR lighting choose something with white light, otherwise you are going to have a bliding red glow that the poor horse will stare at! Personally I would go for neither of them I would either choose Black and white camera because they see better in the dark or better still a Wide Dynamic camera or Day Night camera, Day night cameras are clour by day and BW by night, they do require lighting of some sort but not a lot of it, the wide Dynamic will try to keep it in Colour for most of the time but will be excellent at low light as well, both of these require low lighting, so you will haev to choose which would be less intrusive for your animal. Ok so cables and camera sorted, with the temps you are looking at I would ask for a housing for the camera that has a little heater in it, this can be turned on or off, better still would be one that has an exhuast fan as well that can be turned on in summer. Try to get one that has a clear glass not a tinted glass as you may not have much lighting. Lastly, you have two choices for viewing, the easiset would be to plug the cable into your telly where the Xbox or Playstation would normaly go or simply unplug the VCR input ionto your telly and plug the cable in there, or if your VCR supports it you could plug it into the Input on your VCR then simply choose the AV input on either your telly or your VCR depending on what you plugged it into, obviously the VCR would be better so you can record this magic moment. Hope this helps.. PS we expect pictures
  7. Intel boards are great, but do tend to be more fussy than any other board, never tried one on a 900 system but can not see it as being a problem, I am a big fan of ASUS boards,...hey any board that talks to you and can play music from the BIOS gets my vote. If you use raid, you ar doing to loose some space on the drive, depending on which raid you use of course, I am a big fan of Raid arrays, but I really doubt you are going to need it, seriously just do what you planned with one small drive and one large one, Sata is a good idea, faster transfer and less air blockage, you really do not need 1GIG ram unless you lan to have say 20 or so people connecting to your box at the same time, really 512 of good quality fast spec Corsair should suffice, but being a 900 machine I would be tempted as well, so not a real drama if you do.

    XP Pro SP2

it is a real pain, by default the exporer options are to turn of dirct x controls, used by most remote apps, if the firewall is on you have to enable the ports as well and the pop u killer is also a pain in the bum, especialy when it asks you to install a codec and that screen does not show, luckilly Geo changed the web browser so it will prompt without pop up and informs you that SP2 may be blocking it but that is only on latest version, getting sick of tech calls asking why web cam no longer works

    Kalatel on Ebay

Few things I didnt notice earlier, it only plays back one camera at a time and log play is nothing compared to kalatel, a real pain, but it is manageble, falls short there but it is only new, also the CDRW version is more expensive we will probably sell it around $1300 AUD, I dont know what the conversion is on top of my head (and too lazy to look) but I magine thats around $1000 US without HDD, another drawback I can see is only supports two IDE devices, one HDD and one CDRW or two HDD. I havent had time to test it fully yet, we are still negoitiating with them for exclusive but now that I have opened my trap about it, somene else will probably be doing the same. We wont relase it to market for some time as testing will need to be done on it and only hd short time to look at it but it looks the goods.

Help? Panasonic WJ-HD500B or Kalatel DVMRE CT

Actually DM does spport multiple DVRS from one application, but you have to pay for it, pretty sad really, I found the DM latest remote softwrae easier than the kalatel, but I must say the Kalatel has a better range of features and is more like a PC so more features, DM's components are a little better though from what I can see inside the case, but haven't had a great deal to do with them, in Australia the DM kills Kalatel but I like both units.. well loved both units until Nadatel came around.

    Kalatel on Ebay

Forget Kalatel, unless you need 16 cameras, I just got the Nadatel and it rocks, it has looping outputs, USB back up CDRW back up, network back up, programable switcher, 100FPS remote web client, remote softwrae, email support, remote control, and transmits in larger res than a Geo and it records in MPEG2, it has 2x rs232 converters and alarm inputs and outputs, not to mention 4 ch audio... man for $500US without HDD it really rocks!

    pc restarts

no problems, biggest reason for Geo reboots is always the following, failure to use a software interactive UPS, results in corrupted data, then when writing to that part of the corrupted drive ...blamo..reboot, The other reason is not haveing cameras connected you need at least one camera connected or the Geo software (not the whole machine) will restart all the time.

Yeh read that, always drams with them, bloody should concentrate on their game a little more than the outside world, so many stars and so few goals. DVR

Cripes I havent sold a Mux or Quad in over three years.. mind you looping switchers are very popular, good cheats way to avoid buying real time cards for pc based systems, simply feed the cams to the switcher and loop to dvr then the feed from switcher can be programed, heaps cheaper as long as they do not want the switcher to be where the spot monitor is, then it eats up extra cabling and time.

HELP Urgent !!! DVR Selection Compare

Maybe your right Rory, but I know that techwin is way cheaper and way less quality, I should know I have tested both, both have different reps so the guy that sells Electronics told me that Techwin was previuosly a partner in Electronics, but split, I have also been told that Techwin does not manufacture much and that they OEM other products under the Samsung name, specs mean very little these days as many lie or cheat to get thier product spec'd, for example Ganz rates it's signal to noise ration on what is averaged from a long period where I ahev seen others that rate theirs on the highest it ever reached in their lab.. I am not convinced about the whole Samsung thing, but I must admit that Techwin ahs a really bad name here and Electronics outsells it even though it is much more expensive.
