  1. I'm a camera newb, but I'm also a business owner (with a very small budget) so sometimes I have to DIY. I figured how hard could installing IP cameras in our warehouse be? So I climbed into a JLG sizzor-lift and installed some cameras. Although I was pleased with the results the job was none-to-fun; filthy, dirty hard work is a better description. Although I have a lot of experience with networking and running Cat5e cable this job is better entrusted to a professional installer. Camera placement is another issue. All I could afford is 2MP cheapo Costco Swann bullets and Dahua 2MP domes and I think that the correct placement of these cameras is critical; I'm not so certain I got the optimal placement correct the first time. So hats off to the professional CCTV installers. They have a heckuva tough job and the next time someone rips them for charging "too much" I'm gonna chime in with an emphatic WTFDYK.
  2. One and a half years have passed; I've learned a lot and we're now running 16 cameras. After running a lot of Cat5e 300-feet across the ceiling of a warehouse I've come to appreciate gloves, a hat and goggles. Yuk! Here are some more snapshots from some of the new cameras...

    Best camera for under £100

    I recommend the Hikvision DS-2CD2032-I!
  4. Yikes. Why would you not simply deploy a POE injector?

    Opinions on ths Swann system?

Best Buy is seldom a best buy. Look for an Hikvision system with four 3MP cameras which has an option to add four additional cameras at a later date so that the system can be expanded to 8 cameras if needed. It would be a shame to purchase that Best Buy system only to decide at a later date that you need to junk it because there are so many better options out there.
  6. At $83.50 including shipping it simply does not get much better than this...look no further... Hikvision DS-2CD2132-I 3MP network mini dome IP camera with 30M IR

Got robbed, help me secure perimeter

Get a big dog. Post video warning signs. Post NRA stickers.

Got robbed, help me secure perimeter

Taking pictures of people stealing your stuff doesn't make a lot of sense. It may be better to DETER the robbers; help these people choose a softer target.
  11. No chance that video was rigged, eh? Noooo chance.

    Hikvision or Dahua

Dahua firmware updates are very hard to find. Hikvision updates it's firmware often and the updates are easy to identify and obtain. IMHO, Hikvision is the way to go.

    PTZ or dome? Which one?

My Acti E33: good in day or fluorescent light but it s u c k s with it's built-in IR light.
  16. Segregate your cameras on a separate network segment. User strong passwords. Access your cameras on a nonstandard port, say 42345. Use your firewall to close all other ports and you will be more than reasonably secure.
  17. Once your wife sees the quality of 2+MP IP video she will forget about what she thought she liked.
  18. They have Max! Over the past several months I've purchased several Hiklvision DS-2CD2032-I and DS-2CD2132-I IP cameras from AliExpress for $87.00 each. They arrive within 1 to 2 weeks and low and behold...they work very well. " title="Applause" />
  19. If your cameras share your local area network then exposing them to outside access is not the wisest course of action; it would be better to segregate such cameras on a isolated network.

    Blue Iris Software

While an i7 is nice, 4-6 cameras can run easy on an i5 (third or fourth generation). Using the direct to disk recording option I have 3 2mp cameras and one 1mp camera, all at 15fps and using roughly 25% even with 2 cams recording it stays at about 30... this is with a i5-3450s Try the i5 with eight 2MP cameras and you won't feel very nice anymore. So, yeah, if your looking to dead-end your expansion path and i5 is nice.

    Blue Iris Software

Blue Iris is a great piece of software with a wide range of options which supports many cameras. A+ software IMO. However, to have it run acceptably with 4 or more 2+MP cameras you are going to need an i7 processor in the PC you use as the blue Iris server.
