Opinions - Are security camera way overpriced and outdated?
Q2U replied to mxmaniac's topic in General Digital Discussion
Right. Why don't you try to plugg a Cat5e cable into the back of one of those cameras. Then try enabling motion detection, ftp or record to internal storage. Let us know how you make out. -
As far as I know, nobody's figured out how to use the TFTP setup to unbrick a Dahua camera. Their tech support people can do it, but nobody's had much luck getting anything out of them either. Be sure to keep us posted on your progress! Yo! Check it out! If it becomes well documented, and it works, this guy's a hero... http://www.cam-it.org/index.php?topic=6510

Definitely: all of my Costco SWNHD-820CAM units shipped with this firmware... Firmware Version V4.0.9 130419 Encoding Version V4.0 build 121228 Since then I've updated three (3) of these units with the following Hikvision Raptor firmware... Firmware Version V5.1.0 build 131202 Encoding Version V5.0 build 131128 -
I run Vivotek FD8136-F2, Acti E33 and Hikvision DS-2CD2032-I cameras (all run inside a warehouse btw). My Hikvision DS-2CD2032-I cameras produce clearer day and night images. Better firmware. Better price. It isn't even close.

2 1080P IR Bullets at Costco for 349
Q2U replied to buellwinkle's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Yes, these cameras would be limited by your NVR's capabilities...however...when using these cameras in "networked IP stand-alone mode" they run at either 1280x720 (1MP) or 1920x1080 (2MP) or 2048x1536 (3MP) resolutions (whichever resolution you have the camera configured for). These cameras are re-branded Hikvision DS-2CD2032-I cameras. Previously, these cameras were advertised as "2 megapixel" units. However, it now appears that Costco is marketing them as "3 megapixel" units which means to me that they are shipping with an updated firmware. A lot of us are using these cameras as stand-alone units (I run 8 + 3 additional cameras of another brand) which run over our local area networks and which are connected to our VMS software such as Blue Iris which is what I run. -

2 1080P IR Bullets at Costco for 349
Q2U replied to buellwinkle's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Today I noticed that Costco is now advertising these units as "3 megapixel 1080p cameras" instead of the previously advertised "2 megapixel 1080p cameras." http://www.costco.com/Swann-HD-1080p-NVR-IP-Add-on-Bullet-Camera-2-pk.product.100039914.html -

Q2U replied to buellwinkle's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Blue Iris is fine software but it can need a high-end processor once you start doing motion detection and recording with a dozen 2mp cameras. Does not Hikvision have a free camera management software offering? -
IP Based Security Systems not as safe or as great
Q2U replied to varascope's topic in General Digital Discussion
I find irony in the fact that you bought a gun to feel more secure, but you kept it loaded in your night table only to have it stolen by a bugler who shot you with it when you returned home to find him rummaging through your house. Does that mean that guns are bad? No, it does not. Does that mean that you are stupid? Yes, it most definitely does. Unfortunately, you were resuscitated at the hospital and now you will live to procreate and pollute the human genome. In the good ol' days people like you died, and the human race was far healthier as a result. This is what I call Q's Theorem on "The Subversion of Natural Selection by Modern Medical Technology." It's not a toaster. If you fail to secure your IP devices then you will suffer consequences; I believe the majority of us here know that. -

Newegg is NOT the great place it used to be. What happened?
Q2U replied to QC444's topic in General Digital Discussion
Just a note: you are the "Shipper." UPS, FedX, USPS, etc. is the "Carrier." A common shipping nomenclature error but it drives me nuts. Been using NewEgg since 2000, but not so much anymore. Lately I've been buying from Amazon. I don't know why I made this change, it just happened. My NewEgg Rule #1 was always "get it right the first time" and don't expect to have a satisfactory return experience. This is now my Amazon Rule #1. -

Set up a system so the residents can use a smartphone app, a tablet app or a browser to access the video. No wires = less pain.
