  1. Hello All,

I currently have a self-installed video security camera system along the outside of my home. My system consists of:

    - Zotac ZBOX IQ-01 Mini-PC Intel 4770T Core i7 Quad Core 3.7ghz

    - Windows 7 64bit running Blue Iris

    - 2 x Acti E32 @ 15fps 2048 x 1536

    - 1 x SD42212SN-HN 2MP 12X Optical Zoom PTZ Dome @ 30fps 1920 x 1080

    - 1 x AVTech AVN813 Wireless Camera @ 15fps

    - Zyxel ES1100-8p PoE Switch

I am thinking of relocating one of my Acti E32 cameras by adding a 75' CAT5e cable run to the existing 60'. I was planning to use a Female-to-Female Ethernet Cable Connector to do this.

Will I notice any visible signal degradation by doing this?

Thanks in advance to those who reply!

  2. Hello all again,

My self-installed video surveillance system had been functioning flawlessly for 5 months.

    Here is what I have:

    2 x ACTi E32

    1 x Dahua SD3282-GN 2Mp PoE PTZ Dome

    1 x Zyxel ES1100-8p w/4 port PoE unmanaged switch

1 x Zotac 4770T Quad Core Mini-PC Win7 64bit Blue Iris @ 10% Processor Occupancy with all cams at full resolution & fps.

My Dahua's cable run is 75' (Outdoor Cat5e rated). Here is a link to it's specs: http://www.dahuasecurity.com/products/sd3282d-gn-288.html

I'm running this off one of the PoE ports off the Zyxel switch whose max per port output is 15.4 watts (without external power source). The Dahua is under an eave above the front of my house monitoring my front driveway. You may have seen video that I've posted on one of my earlier posts. It has been working flawlessly for 5 months. I just noticed that recently in the evenings, the connection just drops & I get no video on Blue Iris (both PC & iPhone 5s) & IP Cam Lite on my iPhone 5s. I managed to reboot the camera by unplugging & replugging the Cat5e connection from the Zyxel switch.

All cameras are running on max resolution, fps & mbps! I'm just wondering since the Dahua consumes 15 watts of power that when the nightvision (no IR LEDs) kicks in does it consume more power so that the Zyxel cannot handle it? Or is the Zyxel switch dying? I've power cycled it once yesterday, everything was fine, but then when I woke up today, the Dahua had cut out again!

Does the combination of the 75' cable run along with the Zyxel's max 15.4 watt PoE port output cut down on the power that's actually feeding the Dahua Dome? I'm thinking of going to the local PC store & buying a TrendNet Power Injector to isolate the power going to the Dahua. It only puts out 15.4 watts though, but it will be dedicated (http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX45841). I really wanted to get this one by LTS since it puts out up to 30 watts: http://www.computers-canada.ca/store/products/1027021492/POE-I100H/LTS/

One last question. Although this camera is under my house eave, the specs say the Working Environment should be Less than 90% Relative Humidity. Well where I live in the Pacific NW, when it rains from days on end (which it has been lately) it is usually 100% RH. My connections are well protected with Butyl insulation tape. Could this be the problem? I do not see any condensation in the housing or dome glass cover.

Any advice on what to try would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance!!!

  3. Niiiiice! Did you use the pole mount or did you just bolt that sucker to the pole? Nice pictures! That baby is gonna be put to the test soon enough through the winter months. In really bad snow they can pack up a bit and lose some tilt motion, but it clears with the sun. A little careful moving of the camera can help to clear it too, during the storm. The dahua I installed made it through Sandy up on a pole, so they are tough mofos! Thanks for posting. I always look forward to it!
Shock, thanks. I didn't use a pole mount cause the pole was wood. I used strong bolts and bolted one side of the bracket to the pole. There is a space behind the camera, but the cable going into the camera is a compression fitting and it's water tight. The cable comes from the camera and goes up to a sealed outdoor gang box. Water does not travel upward, so those connections are good. I even siliconed the hole that the cable enters just to avoid moisture. The power and cat5 are in flex hose and a compression fitting connects it to the gang box. The cable, camera, and connectors, should last forever.

I was curious on these Dahua PTZs with IR LEDs, how do you keep the camera lens & IR LEDs clean as they are exposed to the environment?

  4. I think luckyfella is referring to 2 different PTZ cameras here .

I have that PTZ camera. Dahua makes it. It has great night vision as long as there is light. The zoom is not great at only 3x optical also. It's a nice small mini dome which is nice as well.
This refers to the Dahua SD3282D-GN 2Mp with 3x Optical PTZ mini dome that I have.

It has 20x optical and the IR's are good for 300 feet.
I believe here he is referring to Dahua's new Eco-Savvy SD6C120S-HN 1.3Mp with 20x Optical PTZ.

  5. Hello Everyone!

I noticed that there hasn't been a review done of what I think is a very affordable outdoor PTZ camera that can be powered on PoE alone!

For a price range of between $550-$599 this camera has excellent features:

    • 1/3” 2Mp Exmor CMOS

    • Max 25/30fps@1080P

    • 3~9mm 3x optical zoom

    • H.264/MJPEG & Dual-stream encoding

    • Max 80°/s Pan/Tilt speed, 0°~350° pan rotation

    • DWDR, D&N(ICR), DNR(2D&3D)

    • 1/1ch audio in/out, 2/1ch alarm in/out

    • Micro SD card, PoE

    • IP 66, IK 10, -10~55°C

Ever since I started putting together a home video surveillance system to keep an eye out for suspicious activity, I've slowly come to the realization that this exact camera was what I needed from the start! I originally had an ACTi E32 (which I am now selling) whose picture was excellent but because it was stationary, I could not view what was going on in our street. Now, I can position this PTZ anywhere so that I can monitor the area. I didn't see the need for a 20x-30x optical zoom as I don't intend to spy on anyone .

Best of all, it can be powered by PoE, with no need for a separate power supply!

    is a day video.

    is a night video.

Special thanks to Jenny @ goGSS.com for getting this camera to me so quickly!

  6. I'm running 8 e32 cameras on the 16 port version of your ZyXel switch with no issues like that. I also know from running the cameras on a Cisco switch that the cameras only use like 5-7 watts of power in day or night mode so you should not be having any power issues.

When you are having issues in software can you access the camera directly in a web browser fine? The only other thing I can think of is an end or cable issue of some type. How cold are we talking? Maybe the cable or end is being affected by really cold temps?

I have had guys connect ACTi cameras a few times and I can access the camera and change IPs and all but you get no video at all. Have them put new ends on the cable and it works fine, so the end must be 99% there but not quite right somehow. You never know I guess.

I found the problem. Through a process of replacing cables, ends, swapping cameras, I was able to determine that the E32 in question is defective. I've been issued an RMA & sent it back to ACTi, who were awesome as far as communicating with me!

  7. Hello All! I installed my own outdoor surveillance system in July 2013. Everything was working fine until it started to get colder. Mainly, it's the camera in the front driveway with the longest run of 100'. In Blue Iris this camera started & continued with several no signal alerts in the night-time. When there was video the fps varied from 0.60-5.00fps. I have dialed back the CBR to 128k for a resolution of 2048x1536 @5fps. I've done this to the other 2 cameras as well. I'm still a novice at this, so I figure that by doing this, there is less bandwidth clogging up the system. I also turned the front driveway camera to the DAY setting since I have 3 street lights that keep the area bright all night, thus keeping the IR LED's off, thinking that maybe this exceeds the maximum PoE port power of 15.4watts put out by my Zyxel switch (but I'm not really sure that this is the reason for the very low fps & signal losses).

    Here is my system:

    - 3 brand new ACTi E32 cameras

    - 1 brand new Zyxel ES1100-8p unmanaged PoE switch

    - dedicated Zotac SD-ID12 Plus 1.8ghz D525 Intel Atom dual-core mini-pc w/2gb memory, 250gb hard drive w/Win7 64bit

    - Blue Iris latest software

Any explanation as to why this is occurring & advice towards improving the video in my front driveway camera would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

  8. All my ACTi and AVTech cameras work fine on my MacBook Air, but I'm running IE on Windows 7 on VMware Fusion. From BlueIris's web server, you can access the cameras via Safari on the Mac that way and probably the best way as you can view all the cameras live at once and view the recordings from your Mac. We did this on our vacation and it worked out well.

    You are a true SAGE!!!

    Thank you!!!
