I was looking at the Digmerge thinking that it would be good that they allready make a real DVR. Digimerge http://www.digimerge.com/cgi-bin/new_digimerge/product.cgi?uid=18

What brand do you use? USB 2.0? Does it take all the PC resources?

It seems to me that you cannot believe a manufacturers spec. If that is the case you need to demo, but they do not seem to represent what a product can do. Please check out some of the demos below and pick a system based only on the demo. Ganz MPEG4 480 TVL http://www.cbcamerica.com/cctvprod/ganz/cams/ipcam/ipcam.html ACTi Video Server http://www.acti.com/software/live_demo.Asp Sony PTZ SNCRZ30N (if it ever works) http://151.204.174.22/home/homeJ.html Same Cam in Texas http://64.95.219.1/home/homeA.html Geovison in LA http://www.dvrkits.com/dvr_live_demo.htm Video Insight in Houston http://www.demovi.com Tons Of Demos http://www.spytown.com/remvidtrande.html I think the ACTi looks the best and the Geovison is a close second with the Ganz who I have used and like looks like crap. I think that Nuvico has installed a T3 into a laundry mat to make there demo look good It would be nice if a third party would do some real testing of the cameras and DVR's Before someone replys with bandwidth and to many users as the difference I think that a company the size of Sony selling a PTZ for $1500 dollars should be able to afford decent bandwidth and load balance over a few PTZ cams using Round Robbin DNS.

I have never seen any voice program that works with over 80% accuracy. I do not know if your drivers license has a magnetic stripe but if it does swiping it will collect the information without typing. Or they have license OCR software and scanners if you do not have the magnetic option. Is there a database that already has all the employee info in it? Why not just do a import, then the guards will only have to update. I can put you in touch with a friend that is reviewing a retina scanner, when I spoke with him he said that is was better than hand geometry (my favorite).

I have used this system at 3 locations (all schools). http://www.raptorware.com Works great, Justin is the devloper and I am sure he would work with you for a Island version. They have a system that is not for schools that you might like. http://www.newbart.com also has a web based sign in system. They are a great Houston company that I deal with. I have also installed alot of Handreader 3000 with Genpro. They also make a guard system. http://www.timeamerica.com http://www.handreader.com

Anyone know of a cheap 1-4 channel with POS overlay and network?
-
I agree that the firewall is a must have, but AV is a preventative measure. With AV installed allot of viruses are disabled before causing a problem.
-
Computer security depends on how much you want to risk vs. spend. If the DVR is a few thousand dollars I would expect a manufacture to spend a couple of bucks and install some AV. If the client is monitoring a few million dollars worth of assets he will feel better knowing that there is at least AV running on the DVR. http://www.sygate.com/solutions/xpe-solutions.php or http://ca.com/channel/oem/eav.htm

It will be a little more with support and AV updates. But I use and love them. http://www.fortinet.com I think the 50a runs at $500 The same OS is on there $60,000 system. It will do IDS, IPS, VPN, SPI, and AV. I have I guy that can give you a better deal. PM me if you want his info.

Is there a trick to good video through a tinted window? I am guessing that mounting the lens close to the windows is a good start to prevent glare but is there anything else.
-
Do you want the hood to touch the window creating a seal from the lens to the window?

VPN stands for “Virtual Private Networkâ€

Plenum you can run in a ....... Air Plenum. It has a coating on it that prevents toxic smoke from being pumped via the A/C into the building if the cable was in a fire. Commercial buildings with drop ceilings use the air space above the ceiling as the air plenum in most cases. There is lots of ratings like Riser Rate can only penetrate vertical floors such as a elevator shaft. You need to check your building codes on if you are required to run plenum. If you are running plenum you may also need fire stop. It is rated by hours and should be used if you penetrate a wall that is designed to prevent fire from spreading.

rory, are there any wide dynamic cameras under $200? or some kind of device to place around the lens, then attache to the windows to block the lite that is in the building?
-
How can you tell if you need to use a heated or cooled outdoor houseing? Do you need to run a extra cable for the heater, blower? Is there anything special about the round type? I was looking at the Pelco EH2512 http://www.spytown.com/peehseho.html I am in Houston Texas, it is hooooooooooot in the summber, wet in the winter and allways humid

Some pics for a good mount. Swap the laser for a camera. http://www.naimark.net/projects/zap/howto.html This guy has a lot of info on how to try to sneak by a CCTV system. As a big red blob.

You may want to try a new cable modem. I had a account I spent 2 hrs playing with the router. I called cable tech support and they said the modem was fine. I changed it out anyway, and he has never had a problem since. The filter multicast makes multicast messages not broadcast to all the computers just the ones that are in the multicast group. The Block Anonymous Internet Requests is just blocking ICMP Echo (aka ping) traffic.
