Trying to better understand Milestone motion detection
grege replied to voip-ninja's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Which version of Milestone? I demoed and ultimately bought licenses for XProtect Essentials with 4 cams. I'm quite happy with it other than normal issues like this one when you are using something new. What tipped me over was the quality of the Milestone mobile apps. They are quite good. That's the version I was thinking of. I first thought about XProtect Go but since my cameras are watching my lake house I thought the 5 day limit would not be good for me. I have Blue Iris but liked that the Milestone came with an app for my phone where I have to buy the one for Blue Iris. What are the specs of your computer? I have a Core 2 6400 2.13GHz with 2GB of RAM. Wasn't sure if that would be good enough for Milestone or not. -

Trying to better understand Milestone motion detection

I was maybe interested in trying Milestone. So does it use the camera based motion detection or does it use their own or do you get a choice? I have ACTi cameras and didn't have any luck with their NVR 3.0 software using the camera based detection. I was using Blue Iris but was having trouble getting it to see the ACTi cameras. That's why I was thinking of trying Milestone. -

ACTi NVR 3.0 motion detection error
grege posted a topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
I set up some areas and I've got an email coming on motion detection. I receive the email and their is a picture attached, however, the email says this Does anybody know why I am getting the error and how to fix it? I checked and the folder does exist on my computer but is empty. I also looked in the NVR software to see if there was a place to change the location but I couldn't find it anywhere. -
Of the 3 re-sellers in Houston only one answered their phones and then put me on hold not to return. Do you have a number for a place in Kentucky? Are they about the same price as Wrightwood? I will PM you.
-
Not sure if you want indoor our outdoor but I can sell you my Foscam cameras (2 indoor pan tilt and 1 outdoor fixed) if you want IP cameras. I've been using them for about a year to get my feet wet and I'm now upgrading to 4 ACTi outdoor cameras. They are definitely not the best and have some issues at times (i.e. outdoor one flickers which causes false emails and can have a darker picture at times) but for the price they might be what you need. PM me if interested.

I thought the same thing. If you can't find anybody in Houston PM me and I will give you the name of my guy here in Kentucky.

ACTi Motion Detection Areas

I ran more cable to be able to install my cameras this weekend. I left 1 running so I can play with it and get the NVR 3.0 software working. When setting up motion detection there are 3 areas available. How do most set up the areas for motions? With my old Foscam I only set up 1 area and masked out some places. Not even sure if I could do more than 1 area. If I'm looking at the front of my house would you do only 1 area or use 2 or 3? If more than 1 would you want to overlap any areas? Thank

Need IP/PoE solution
grege replied to kindofsudden's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
They just sold out then because it was in stock when I posted it. Probably take you a week to get the cameras so you might have Newegg email you when it comes in. I had to do that and it still got to me before the cameras. Roadtrip is tempting. I have friends in Indy and was actually wondering if you might have been one of them but they don't drink so obviously not. I went with 4 of the E42 cameras and I'm mounting 3 of them this weekend at my lake house. My 4th will probably go in a tree and I haven't run the wire yet for it. Plenty of woods around my house so I don't think I will be trenching very deep. I did the bullet cameras because I wanted them to extend from where I mounted them a little because of the position of my house. I did the vari-focal lens but after testing my locations the 3 I will be mounting will be at the widest angle so I could have done fixed and saved some money. -

Oh and to answer your other question, If you use the ACTi software then once you get it set up on your PC and the cameras all set up, remotely you can access the ACTi software with a web browser or with a workstation software they provide. You will need to set up DDNS so you don't have to know the IP address of your house. It can change since it is probably not a static IP. If you want an app on your phone then you will have to set up some different port numbers for each camera and port forward those on your router. ACTi did tell me they will have an app coming out at the end of the month so that may make it a little easier. Greg -

You will also need to terminate the CAT5e cable you are running. Either with plugs or jacks. If you use jacks then you will need patch cords. I got my PoE switch from Newegg and went with this one. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833181164 I'm in Louisville. If you were closer I might have even helped you. -
I decided to find a local retailer. I figured I would support a local company and have better support. I did buy some brackets from an online guy, http://wrightwoodsurveillance.com/, and had a good experience. I know buellwinkle has recommended them before too.

ACTi Motion Detection Areas
grege replied to grege's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Thanks Ando. I will read over it. Sounds like I will want multiple detection areas. -
I didn't do any inside....yet. I would probably go with the D55 or E53 since I would want the day/night ability. The house has a monitored alarm so I wanted the camera's for outside to start with. I'm replacing 1 cheapo Foscam and a Dlink I have sitting in a window with 4 ACTi. Only movement inside should be me when I am there.
-
Other than the obvious, network cables to your camera locations, you should be good. And depending on how you plan on doing that you my need plugs, jacks, crimp tool, testers, patch cables, etc. I went with ACTi E42 and have the cables run for 3 of them and a test one on a tripod inside my house. After getting them and seeing what the brackets looked like I ordered the more heavy duty versions. My plan is to do the install next weekend.
-
No problem. I was curious if you it was possible for future use and was already talking to them.

Chucky, An engineer with ACTi was giving me some other help so I asked him your question. Here is what he said. Hope that helps

I'm installing 4 ACTi E42 cameras at my lake house this weekend and plan on using ACTi NVR 3.0. I would also like to be able to use myLiveCams to be able to view the cameras from my Samsung Galaxy. I hooked them up at my work and updated the firmware. While in there I saw the port mapping screen with 9 ports listed. Which ports do I need to make unique for each camera? I thought I could go ahead and get those changed before I go down. Which ports will I need to port forward on my router? Also, are there any ports I will need to forward in order to get to the NVR 3.0 remotely? Thanks

question on ACTi camera install
grege replied to grege's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
I figured I would need to change them so the app on my Samsung Galaxy would be able to differentiate them since I use DDNS to access my lake house. -

grege replied to grege's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Do you remember what port numbers you had to change on the ACTi cameras to make them unique? I am using Blue Iris with my Foscam cameras but was thinking of switching to the NVR 3.0 software for the ACTi cameras. -
question on ACTi camera install
grege replied to grege's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
I am using LiveCams with my ACTi E22. I set stream 2 to MJPEG and set LiveCams Profile to (URL) MJPEG. Enter in the URL field: http://IPAddress:Port/cgi-bin/encoder?USER=Admin&PWD=123456&CHANNEL=2&GET_STREAM The Port used above is the HTTP Port assigned on the Port Mapping screen in your ACTi Web Configurator. Leave the Username and Password fields in LiveCams blank. ~Mike Mike, Do you have just the one ACTi camera and are you using NVR 3.0? Greg -

What about ports to remotely access ACTi NVR?
