Before I begin, please pardon my complete ignorance when it comes to surveillance systems. The only cameras I've ever used were "wirelessly" connected to the home network.
I'm in the process of building a new home and have had wires run to several locations to install hardwired cameras with a DVR. The camera system I bought was from Costco and was a Swann system with 8 cameras (4 dome, 4 bullet). It appears that all cameras have a coax connector for video and also have a connector for DC power. They all also, much to my surprise, have PTZ wires as well. Some also have a yellow video cable as well as the coax cable (presumably for an alternative video option).
My builder ran two wires to each camera location - a coax and a Cat5e. While I'm confident that the Cat5e can be used to run DC power, my question is - do I need to use 2 or 4 wires for the DC, and since the Cat5e appears to have 8 wires - even if I use 4, I should still have 4 left over. Can I then use that to facilitate the PTZ functions?
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
