    Buy CCTV System

It is tough for me to comment on price as UK prices are often times much different than US prices but assuming 275 pound is roughly $450 USD I would suppose you aren't going to do much better than an 700 TVL system. Myself I would recommend stepping up to something that is power over internet (PoE) with IP cameras of at least 720p resolution. I bought a Q-see system that has 4 IP PoE 720p bullet type cameras and a 1 TB hard drive DVR for around $800 (500 pounds) so you will expect to pay more but you will get more. In terms of separate DVR vs. buying a system I concluded that it is for the most part cheaper to buy the DVR and cameras as a unit as compared to buying pieces.
  2. I have a pair of Optex LX-402 PIR sensors I am planning to add to my Q-see system. I've read the instructions and they indicate an 8.3ft (2.5m) mounting height as maximum. My home is a saltbox so in the back the roof comes down all the way to the first floor and I can mount the PIR under the eave and stay right at the top of that mounting height. On the front though the eaves are two stories up which leads me to my question, can I still mount the PIR under the eaves but pointing more down? Or do I have to find a place lower down on the house to mount it which is going to be a problem. So can I mount the PIR up higher but angled down? it has a 40 feet range normally I imagine if I angled it down it would be a shorter range but it should still throw out a plane of detection area even if mounted higher up, right? Thanks - hoping to work this out instead of having to send these back and live with the crappy motion detection in the cameras. P.S. this is an example of a saltbox, we have a camera in the front under the eave aimed towards the door and walkway covering the approach to the front door. I'd like to be able to put the PIR under the eave too.
  3. Okay. I guess I thought the power needed to be closer. Would it be able to handle a 200 ft run?
  4. Luckyfella, Yeah I wanted to go wireless but I am getting lost trying to figure out what I need to have 2 wireless PIRs. running wire is feasible the hard part is bringing power to where I want to put the PIRs.
  5. You know, I'm not totally sure, mine run about 120ft. What kind of length are you talking about? probably 200 ft or so... not sure. I'd have to run them from the DVR in an upstairs bedroom, up into the attic and then down into the basement and outside from there. I know 100' will get me from the attic to the basement but not much further. I have a camera in the basement in the garage (garage under house) that used almost the full 100' cat-5e that came with each camera.
  6. okay so if I follow correctly I would need a the honeywell vista PIRs, vista receiver and vista panel as well, correct? my DVR (QC-808) has alarm inputs would I connect the panel directly to the DVR or do I need a relay in between? It is sounding like I might be better off with some form of stand alone PIRs to trigger the DVR?

    Q-See QC808-1 Owners...

Yes there is a power indicator and also I believe channel indicators, they're not really LED lights but more like a back lit panel. Also there is an audible beep when the system is turned on or restarted. Why do you ask? If the light bothers you a little black electrical tape would remedy the situation - I've had to do this to the cable box and TV in the bedroom as the light was bothersome to my wife, and well you know, happy wife, happy life.
  8. I have a QC-808 system with 4 cameras. I would like to trigger them via PIR. I have been looking around and came across the Honeywell Ademco 5800 vista wireless system. I am wondering if I can buy the wireless PIRs and a receiver such as the 5883 or 5881 and connect it to the alarm input? I can't seem to find much info about the receivers as to whether or not they have a relay output but I am thinking that is the case.
  9. Thanks lowpro... Is there a limit to how long the wire run can be for these wired sensors?
  10. sounds like a solution. Do you mind sharing what you went with? Wireless seems attractive but expensive, I see plenty of Shenzen ones on ebay but don't understand what base unit would be used with these? I could probably run wired ones but I'm not sure where to start with those, any recommendations would be welcome.
  11. I have a Q-See Net DVR with 1.3MP bullet cameras. The model is QC-808 NVR and the cameras are Q-See QCN7001B (aka Dahua IPC-HFW2100). I am currently using default settings and getting a lot of false alarms on the motion detection. Moths at night and rustling leaves during the day. I know I can fine tune the area to avoid the leaves but the moths fly everywhere at night because of the dim red led glow. What sensitivity settings can people recommend to avoid the false alarms but still pick up the big movements (i.e. people). Thanks in advance.
  12. I got my system up and working with 2 cameras and 2 more to install. Hardest part (for me) was running the wires. I did have to reach out to support for some issues with remote viewing and found that via email they were helpful if a little abrupt. I was able to work through the issues which in fairness to Q-See was really an issue with the Comcast router I have for internet access, so in my mind they went beyond what was their responsibility and provided assistance with settings that really fall outside their product, when they could have told me I was on my own.
  13. Thanks Daveshoot, The one I am going with is the 8 channel (expandable) IP PoE based Q-See kit which includes 4 720P 1.3MP cameras (rebranded dahua IPC-HFW2100 cameras). For $799 it is a great deal. http://www.samsclub.com/sams/8-ch-4-cam-nvr-sys-4-hd-720p-ip-bul/prod9130159.ip Please note that there are also SDI and D1 based systems from Q-See at similar price point. I will say I am tempted to buy the $999 Lorex system with 6 cameras for an extra $200 + Costco membership and shipping. Going to really have to consider my design to see if 4 cameras will do, since obviously I'm in another $150 or more should I decide to add another camera to the Q-See system. http://www.costco.com/Lorex-8-Channel-Full-HD-Real-Time-PoE-NVR-Security-System-with-2TB-Hard-Drive-and-6-1080p-Cameras.product.100048576.html
  14. I did, the lorex and swann systems look to be analog TVL until you step up to the $1000 price mark, then I see a decent 8 camera, six bullet and two dome for $999. its more than I need but still cheaper than a four plus two extras. I
  15. hmmm.... well sams club where I am a member has the QC808-461-1 which has the 8 channel NVR and 4 bullets for the same $799 so the plot thickens
