    Help for a noob

no such thing as an ethernet Y. You have to have to a device that routes directs the traffic so to speak (a switch). One ethernet cable can carry many camera streams, you just have to use a switch. So for example you could have a POE switch for front of the house where all front cameras are connected, then that switch plugs into your NVR with one ethernet cable. Another for the back of the house.

Camera with motion detection, but no WiFi

look for a camera with and SD card slot. Most of them will have wifi capabilities, you just wont use it. The camera will "stay on" 24/7 but you can set it to record only on motion. It will record to the SD card. You would then have to put the card into a computer to view events.
  4. it would be simplier if you just used a dusk to dawn light instead of motion sensing light. the light would stay on all night. asking the light and the camera to sense motion at the same time is going to be difficult. You should be able to swap out the motion sensing eye for a dusk to dawn eye.

    Lorex Quality Question

Any monitor or TV will work fine. As far as size goes, it all depends how you are going to use it. There is no "best", its whatever fits your needs.
  6. yes get outdoor rated cat5 for the runs that will be exposed outside. The cameras you are buying are rated for outdoor use so weather doesnt matter, even if completely exposed.

    IP camera over coax?

Megapixels dont have anything to do with it. If you currently have coaxial wire run, find a TVI or AHD camera system. POE is for IP cameras, so wouldnt apply to you.

    Swann 7400 4MP wider cameras

I dont know the answer to your question, but consider just adding another camera right next to current camera for a 150 deg view (75+75).

    swann cctv system

pal and ntsc have to do with DVD formats. Nothing to do with IP camera system.
  10. The smaller the lens number, the wider the angle. So a 3.6mm lens will have around an 80-90 degree viewing angle. The bigger lens number like 6mm will be zoomed in on a smaller view. However you see better detail of the smaller view. Most people want the wider view to see more of their property. You can buy cameras that have variable lens with a range of like 3mm to 9mm, that way you can pick your view. It all depends on your application.

    fix my install.

It needs to be at least 12 channel, but does not need 12 ports. It only has to have 2 ethernet ports. One port going to switch, one port to connect to your network.

Yes one cat5 from your switch to the NVR. Many NVRs now come with a POE port for each camera channel, thereby eliminating the need for a standalone switch. But so long as camera and NVR are on the same network, it really doesnt matter how the cable configuration is set up.

    fix my install.

I use Windows 7 and geovision software. I too use the PC for all sorts of daily tasks, handles it all no problem. I guess its the brand of camera and/or software that makes the difference. My guess is that its the software. When you go into Task manager (alt control delete) what is your CPU usage? Yes you could connect your POE switch to an NVR, just like you are doing currently to your PC.
  14. correct, which you must already have. You mentioned 16/2, that is the cable providing the power, and your RG6 or 59 provides the video. Often they are wrapped together making it look like one cable.

seems like your PC should be plenty for 12 IP cameras. I run 32 IP cameras from an i7 4000 series no problem. Maybe it depends on the brand of camera? (I use Geovision) I think NVR advantage is they arent using windows typically. Linux seems to require much less power to operate.

looking for a simple Camera for watching

what are you trying to accomplish? do you want to be able to go back and see recorded footage? or do you only care about live view? What do you want to watch the camera on? A tv? phone? tablet?
  17. HD doesnt really have to do with the cables. If you want to continue to you current cables you can. you just have to get a AHD or TVI system. Your current cables will not support an IP system (uses cat5 cable).

PC monitor won't work with DVR

possibly the resulotion on the DVR is set too high and the monitor cant display it. So its if set to 1080 and it works on your TV, the monitor may only be 720 and cant display the 1080. Should be a resolution setting on the DVR you can play with.
  19. cant find any mention of audio for that camera, so I assume not.

Nothing wrong with using a PC as your NVR. What cameras are you using and what are the specs of your PC?

    fix my install.

Personally I'd just leave it as it is. Yes thieves could cut your cord. They could also shoot/Spray paint your cameras. They could be completely covered so cameras dont tell you what they look like. Locks can be broken. Nothing will stop a determined theif/criminal. I think there is a very low change that your system will ever be messed with. Can you put the extension cord inside a conduit? Something to physically protect the cable?

    Hello from a total newbie

Do you currently have any wiring in place? Or are you starting from scratch?
  24. There are cameras that can record directly to a hard drive, but Im not sure your camera is one. Usually its more expensive "commercial" grade cameras. If you are going to record 24/7 using 8mp camera, I'd say get the biggest HD possible. 6 or 8TB. If you record using H.265 it will cut your storage requirments by about 40%. I'd still recommend recording only on motion. I understand that trees and shadows affect it, but it will still record alot less than 24/7.

    Live CCTV Transmission

pretty much all cameras can transmit live. Thats the most basic thing a camera does. There are various ways to accomplish the live part. Give more information on exactly what you are trying to accomplish.
