  1. You should not need tons of power as they are 720p cameras...but consider power consumption as the pc will be on 24/7...running an old quad core will be more expensive than buying a haswell i5 off the dell outlet.. for 300 or so.. Also not that ISPY is not free..they charge for remote access and alerts...http://www.ispyconnect.com/pricing.aspx

Security Cameras in the house problem

Why dont you simply use outdoor cameras...the indoor cams are overkill...you are not going to win this battle...
  3. As steve explained...you will want them for future use...coax is used for older analog systems and the hd over analog systems were basically designed as a stopgap technology to allow hd images over older analog lines for locations that had existing coax and it would be costly to replace the coax...installing coax from the get go in new construction is a bad idea (despite what your wife may think ).
  4. I believe you can still use ethernet cable with baluns at the end with the lorex hd over analog as its rebranded dahua cvi - check to confirm. I would NOT install coax on a new home..you are severely limiting your future options...if your wife is stubborn you can simply run an ethernet cable with the coax to use in the future...
  5. which model..again, there is a 720p that is analog and one that is IP..

Digital zoom is useless...any image can be digitally zoomed in after the fact with the same effect...simply play with the dip switches and see what they do... For security purposes, you would be MUCH better off with an 85 dollar hikvision ip camera with an sd card in there that records at 3mp high resolution...I would not rely on a cheap usb adapter like that and a low resolution camera.
  7. Lorex has a bunch of different systems...ip, hd over analog, standard analog..get an IP system and run proper quality ethernet so you have options down the road...it would be a shame to run coax in a new build then pull it out later..what system is she looking at?
  8. It should be fine for your needs...

    CCTV Installation

How many cameras? If 8-16. 1) buy this from costco http://www.costco.com/Swann-16-Channel-HD-NVR-Security-System-with-3TB-HDD-and-8-3MP-HD-IP-Cameras.product.100144944.html 2) buy additional cameras if needed 3) run single ethernet cable to each camera (max 328 feet). The single cable will power and stream data..

There is actually very little you can do with this camera...you will be putting lots of effort into a very low resolution antique..there is no point in having the camera do digital zoom, any vms software can do it...digital zoom on a 400tvl camera is going to look terrible anyway... what do you intend to use the camera for?
  11. In the camera, match the iframe interval to the frame rate and see if that helps...also try playing with the various h.264 options, some dahuas have 264h and 264b try all options and see if it makes a difference.
  12. Doesnt matter..you dont need 30fps...15 is more than sufficient unless you are running a casino. Watch the youtube videos comparing the two.....since your analog cameras are essentially worthless, you might simply consider replacing the entire system with ip. Here is a good start..this is a rebranded dahua system http://www.costco.com/Lorex-8-Channel-HD-NVR-Security-System-with-2TB-HDD-and-4-1080p-Cameras.product.100153164.html Or if your budget is really tight and you dont want to rewire, just go to hd over analog.. http://www.costco.com/Lorex-8-Channel-HD-1080p-Security-System-with-2TB-HDD-and-8-1080p-Cameras-.product.100218592.html (the description says it will support standard analog cams as well)..
  13. Ubiquiti is a poor choice for several reasons.. 1) They use their own proprietary 24v/48v POE standard. Some cameras may now be 802.3af compliant. 2) Their cameras are not onvif compliant and the newer units will not even stream to third party vms software. 3) Very limited camera choices. They created their own proprietary ecosystem...it will never be universally accepted or popular. Who do they think they are, Apple?
  14. First, try unpluging the camera end, but leaving the etherent plugged in at the NVR... If that doesnt work and you want to use a switch...the dont have to expensive...this 45 dollar switch is more than adequate. http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-SF1008P-100Mbps-8-Port-802-3af/dp/B003CFATT2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1435368611&sr=8-1&keywords=tp+link+poe It doesn't work. Dahua must do a firmware upgrade to disable automatic poe detection and removal.. or what use would be the IPC Offline Alarm? Don't you guys use this feature? If anyone steal any of the cameras.. the NVR will dial gsm alarm module that will notify me security has be bridged. Cameras are very rarely stolen...sometimes the cut the connections.....in most instances its not a priority....it may be a setting you are missing I dont know...
  15. Oh. I discovered something. IPC Offline Alarm will work if it the ip cams are located in separate external switches or routers. If the cameras are connected to the NVR internal POE ports.. it can't detect if they become offline (or the IPC Offline Alarm will not trigger). Anyone has ideas why? and what settings to adjust so it can detect its own POE ports and trigger the IPC Offline Alarm? I discovered the reason why the IPC Offline alarm doesn't get triggered when you connect your cameras to the internal poe switch. It's because the moment you removed the cameras.. the entry in the Search cameras menu disappear so it's like you didn't have any camera at all and the offline doesn't get trigger.. but putting them in external switches can retain the entry to trigger the alarm. I have now to look for expensive switches to to make it. But doesn't anyone know by chance how to make the search menu retain the entries even when you removed the camera from the unit internal poe switches? First, try unpluging the camera end, but leaving the etherent plugged in at the NVR... If that doesnt work and you want to use a switch...the dont have to expensive...this 45 dollar switch is more than adequate. http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-SF1008P-100Mbps-8-Port-802-3af/dp/B003CFATT2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1435368611&sr=8-1&keywords=tp+link+poe
  16. If you are running new cable make sure its ethernet...not coax...this will give you lots of options in the future...make sure you use quality solid copper cable not copper clad aluminum (CCA) which is junk.
  17. There is no reason to cover it, its weather proof..that cover is probably causing the problem....its improperly installed, remove the cover or aim the camera further down. You need to play with the color settings as well as white balance if you want to match the images..
  18. Point it even further from the wall, you will see the reflection disappear...also make sure there is nothing above the camera...items even if they are not in the line of sight can cause reflection... Test at night so you can see the difference in realtime.
  19. Place a camera facing the recorder
  20. IR reflection...is this a dome or bullet? If its a bullet simply point it away from the wall more and make sure there is nothing above it..if its a dome you may need to readjust the foam ring around the lens so its sits tight..
  21. Please dont listen to sunny...he/she must have a bunch of old analog cards to sell... Get a single IP camera with an sd card slot built in..many hikvision or dahua cameras have this option...you will need to run a since ethernet cable to the camera and by using a poe injector or cheap poe switch you can power and transmit data of a single cable...analog is out, particularity the standard definition analog...you want 720p at the minumum (NOT 700tvl or 960H, which are analog specs and will not provide a good image...) 1080p would be better...there are lots of posts on the forum..start reading the ip/megapixel section. Thanks much. If you wouldn't mind, any advice on which Hikvision to get along with a POE switch, and all my ports are filled, so I need a switch. While I am handy and can follow directions, not sure on what to purchase or what software is needed. Thanks much! There are literally hundreds of threads on this and other forums discussing the various hikvision cameras..start reading.

    remote viewing(unbelievable)

strange...if you have an old router laying around then you might want to try switching it out...you might also try simply resting both the router and dvr to defaults and setting it up again... seems likely that its a quick in the dvr...you might take the opportunity to upgrade the entire system to IP, or at least hd over analog...dahua has some nice hybrid or tribrid NVR's so you can use your analog cams but add ip or cvi later...

    Infrared illuminator to thwart creep?

Holy crap....good for you..I cannot believe they dont want to do anything...you have an expectation of privacy in your back yard. Now I can understand a standard camera overlooks a yard, but the deliberate placed of that camera is worry some to me. Upload the video to youtube and create a simple easy to remember url that links to the video and include it on your sign so the entire neighborhood can see what this POS did. I would put another sign out front that says something similar to the first but indicates who this person is and leave it there until he takes the camera down.. What state do you live in?
