Trying to help a buddy with security problems

I did not mention an NVR, of course if it goes directly from an NVR it wont lag! I am talking about cameras that are connected to a switch and then routed to the NVR through an IP scan or CMS software. I posted a link to a system with an NVR..in response you stated that ip cameras lag when the network lags and therefore its not a good idea...that is simply incorrect. Even with VMS software the lag is minimal and does not affect the recording...its a non-issue for 99.9 percent of cases..Using AHD has severe limitations as you are not only limited to the cameras available to use but also NVR's....5 years from now you have no idea whether it will even be supported. you have to run independent power to each camera and you must homerun everything. You cannot record to say an sd card in the camera or to two locations at once as you can with IP cameras...
  2. The camera will not supply any power....you need to supply the power.. The camera does work with a passive mic if you dont want to run power.

1 sec sound too long last time I measure my own system at home I got ~ 0.3 sec Its just an estimate...it doesnt matter for recording though...

Agree Have u ever measure lag between cameras and NVR ? just curios Nah, I have never measured it on a standalone......with pc based nvr's I usually get 1 second so depending on the load...

What exatly does not make sense to you ? just curios That the network affects the performance if IP cameras connected directly to an NVR..that doesnt make sense...its not part of your network until you stream video from it... peaceflwr is saying that if you network is slow or laggy it will affect the camera stream to the NVR, that is not the case. This only may be the case if the cameras are not connected to the NVR but rather to some other network connection..

I wont "trust you" because what you are saying makes no sense. The cameras attached to the nvr do not transmit data over the network. The only thing that is transmitted over the network is data from the NVR when remote viewing... I would not buy anything from amazon resellers unless I know they have a good reputation. With costco you can simply return the system at anytime.. Its 2015 and unless you have a severe budget constraint or distance issues 1080p IP is the way to go.

I would suggest going with a HD over coax system such as AHD. The transmission distance is 1600' with coax and will be a more stable connection than IP (since it wont depend on the network). This is a good system, 1200 TVL at 960P and it includes the hard drive http://www.amazon.com/GW-Security-8-Channel-Surveillance-High-Resolution/dp/B00G3PJC1O/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1432736132&sr=8-5&keywords=8+channel+AHD Ip systems, if the cables are homerun to the NVR, dont depend on the network any more than the AHD... Costco has ip systems that are good - http://www.costco.com/Lorex-8-Channel-HD-NVR-Security-System-with-2TB-HDD-and-4-1080p-Cameras.product.100153164.html Or if you want to do hd over coax, they have much better values than that amazon system. http://www.costco.com/Lorex-16-Channel-HD-720p-Security-System-with-2TB-HDD-and-12-720p-Cameras.product.100157889.html http://www.costco.com/Q-See-8-Channel-HD-720p-Security-System-with-2TB-HDD-and-8-720p-Cameras-in-Selectable-Options.product.100148831.html
  8. maybe you should start with tell us what cameras you have?

    TOO MANY QUESTIONS!!!!!!!

Start reading the forum...you want 720p minimum 1080p is better. Dont bother with 700tvl or 960H which are not even close to 720p..
  10. 16 is way more than enough..you can set the unit to alert you in case of false attempts..the problem is not brute force password attached but rather exploits in the firmware...you can minimize the risk by only forwarding the media port...or simply use vpn.
  11. External poe switches are available in gigabit if you want....you dont need gigabit switches for most applications as the cameras themselves are 10/100..start reading posts on the subject.
  12. Those cameras are hd over analog using CVI so you should be able to use a dahua DVR...though the interface would be similar to your current system because its made by dahua...so either learn to use it or see if you can use the dvr with dahua PSS and record to pc..you will not be able to use the cameras with any other system that is not CVI..
  13. have you tried a different monitor? or tried this monitor on another device?
  14. You also dont need the http and rtsp post to be open...all you need is the media port 8000.

    IP cameras over siamese cable

Honestly, at 60 dollars per camera I would still rewire...I would not trust the low end stuff for the long term...Get some estimates on rewiring before spending the money on this...

    Poor night vision

Its got nothing to do with swann vs sentient...swann have several dfferent type of systems-none of which they make, some are hikvision others are not...your sentient system is a rebranded dahua system....you cant simply say all swann is bad..or vice versa, they dont make any of it..its all rebranded...sentient may have a bad system as well...its just a matter of who makes the system itself..

    IP cameras over siamese cable

Thats the price PER unit and you will need two for each camera.. I dont see why running new wire is an issue. Cameras are installed in old construction every day...If you have a skilled crew they can do it with almost no damage to the home and all the cables inside the walls...any incisions will be minimal..it will still be way cheaper than using these units and mounting them near each camera.....do some research and find someone in your area who can run cable neatly. Like wireguys says, this is generally used for instances where running new cable is not an option...in your case it would be silly.

    IP cameras over siamese cable

Those are nice for special situations but its almost always cheaper to run new ethernet and no need to mount that enclosure anywhere...
  19. Boogieman

    IP cameras over siamese cable

Its not going to work that way... The have converters but its a huge hassle and very expensive..It would work better and be cheaper to pay someone to replace the cable... The other option you have is to use an hd over analog system, cvi, sdi, tvi....
  20. You can try to mount a junction box with some strong double sided tape to the eves ..then attach the cameras to the box... As you said you have a problem with cable management as well..if they dont want it on the house then dont do it..
  21. What type of camera? what is the house surface made of?
  22. You can log into the nvr directly and control it from your pc..you dont need ivms running for the nvr to work...
  23. Boogieman

    Can't connect to SMTP server!

    Change the port to 465
  24. ivms should impact nvr recording...one has nothing to do with the other...have you checked the NVR itself? Why are you running ivms if you are using the nvr?
  25. Dont assume that you can connect any camera to any NVR, wireless or not...
