Apartment complex multiple PBX rooms
varascope replied to jjp2014's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
The only thing I am unsure of, without a facility map, is the distances. Since you are limited to 328ft before you need to add a repeater or switch I would not recommend pushing the limit. If your runs are longer and you are utilizing analog cameras, you can use baluns or active baluns depending on distance. Did you use a toner on the 25 pair to each PBX closet? Does the guard station tone back to any PBX closet? If you are planning on running cable anyway, I would recommend running fiber. You can maintain your analog, add IP and even use HD-SDI. With fiber you don't have noise or interference and will not have distance issues. If they are re-doing the parking lot the cheapest alternative is dropping Sch45 pipe with outdoor rated fiber. What state are you in? -

Since you have CAT 3 25 pair and you are looking at just under a mile, you can use extenders capable of several miles. 1. Place embedded DVRs in PBX rooms and connect ethernet cable to the extender OR 2. Use IP cameras with the extender back to your central location into an NVR This configuration is fairly common especially for large campuses. You can bring DVRs together using a CMS software, substitute DVR for a 4 channel encoder or leave as 2 separate units with web browser access. If you PM further details I can confirm the configuration and parts list. -
Trying to diagnose Vivotek dropped frames
varascope replied to Happy Al's topic in Computers/Networking
Irrelevant. The camera should not be dropping frames irrespective of the chosen format. Uhhhh how is high bitrate at MJPG around 65k a frame irrelevant to 5k a frame for H.264 for 720p video. And FYI format and compression are 2 different things. For diagnostics purposes, if the video can stream at a higher frame rate while at comparable bitrate then the issue can be the compression codec and how the processor handles it. If H.264 is worse then the processor cannot keep up. It is relevant as compression is done at the camera. H.264 requires more processing but allows higher bitrate and traditionally smoother streaming. For testing purposes I would like to know if: 1. At 15fps on JPG is any different than H.264 ? 2. At 18fps? 3. At 21fps? 4. At 30fps? Where is the breaking point? Does playback seem faster than usual? Sending uncompressed or less compressed video at higher frame rates may cause the dropped frames. If it is happening during the same settings on H.264 then the problems point more toward the processor. Does the camera allow for I,P,B frame adjustments? What are they currently set for? -
Your thinking down the right path. What is your frame rate per channel? I would suggest setting up CMS V2 as this is a cleaner way of doing this without tons of configuration. This way you maintain local storage while recording on a secondary. Hard drives are cheap and a few 4TB drives WD Red should get you 6 months. We have a customer with 32 channels that is about 11 months of storage with 6TB. 30fps with a medium bitrate. What is your motion percentage across all cameras? Your network load can take a hit unless you use dual NICS with Gigabit. One complaint clients had was Geovision having a corrupted DB on network drives, but not 100% sure as I havn't touched Geo in years

No not from Avent.... ,NY Yes and no on file size. yes it is smaller IF at the same bitrate, but due to larger formats as 5MP to 4K offsets the file size since the bitrate is increased to maintain quality. The key will be finding balance and also which reiteration will be used, like AVC vs SVC on H.264. H.265 doesn't use macroblocks so processing is more intense. I still prefer framerate than overall frame quality for security video. 30 chances to capture vs 7-10. A lot of information can occur in one frame. We can only use what is available at the time and changes quickly creating better affordable encoding. -

Still Beta still expensive. So far so good but processor intensive with some heat issues that need to be addressed. -

Why are you using JPG vs H.264 compression? JPG is a much larger file size. Try H.264 with variable bitrates first. Also try a secondary drive 6Gbs Write speed. Is there a difference between drives? SSD, varies by manufacturer, have a wide range of performance. Same with SSD Cards, they are limited read writes, great for photo but not video. -

Coming from a manufacturing end they have to be more money and here is why: 1. Troll the forums and you see tons of people looking for firmware, upgrades etc. Who does the upgrades? I have to pay development time to create new firmware to keep up with Microsoft and others every time they change Windows or a browser. Try getting that with a $50 camera. 2. You want a new 4k camera? Where do you think the development dollars come from? Certainly not from selling $50 cams. Where do you think the features come from? 3. I need to sell quantity, who pays for marketing, tradeshows, distribution, shipping etc, etc? What about sales staff? 4. Licensing. Do you think H.264 is free? We are already using H.265 which relates back to point 2. Features you think are standard such a trip-wire detection, for example, we have to pay licensing. Now follow the dollar......... In the old days Manufacturer >Distributor>Dealer>End User or Installer Now Manufacturer from overseas >direct to customer Manufacturer from overseas > their relatives in the US >direct to you The money goes back overseas and does not get spent in the USA. People wonder why we have unemployment and the economy is in the toilet. Why...........because people want cheap crap and they buy cheap crap from overseas and pay cheap prices but then come here looking for Platinum level support and firmware upgrades, software revisions and think it will fix their problem and whine like a baby that the quality isn't good, it doesn't work great. Wah Wah Wah, my p***y hurts! LOOK AT THE POSTS HERE! PEOPLE LOOKING FOR SUPPORT BECAUSE THEY CANT GET IT FROM WHERE THEY BOUGHT IT OR FROM THE NANUFACTURER THAT CANT SPEAK ENGLISH! Ask your self this? Walmart over the years sold several brands of MP3 players. Who is the most constant and still there? Apple Ipods. Are they the cheapest, NO! But they are still there and you can get support. Now look at Ebay. How can a USA seller compete selling an item that Ebay allows China to sell direct? Ebay is the number one offender of supporting China and sticking it to USA sellers. CNB cameras are the perfect example. Why be a CNB dealer when they sell on Ebay direct to the consumer. No wonder why the old CEO was caught bribing and embezzling. NO ETHICS ! Just like I tell customers that say I can get a DVR cheaper on Ebay or from Costco, call Ebay and Costco for support and see how far you get. So the answer is you get what you pay for! Go ahead and buy the $50 camera but CALL where you bought it from NOT here trying to get cheap free support ! FEEL FREE TO COPY AND PASTE THIS POST EVERYTIME YOU SEE A POST ASKING FOR A CHEAP......... ! -
IP Based Security Systems not as safe or as great
varascope posted a topic in General Digital Discussion
I find irony in the fact your purchase a security system to provide "Security" but security is lacking in design. There are hundreds of reports of hacked IP cameras that range from Cisco, Foscam, Dlink, Mobotix and the list goes on. Hacks range from denial of service, malicious reboots, drive erasure and video or audio injection. For example in injection attacks, alternate video or audio is sent in the stream. Your recorded/VMS then records movies, songs or the hackers own audio. Imagine a bank being robbed but when the police playback the video, they are watching a portion of the movie Heat. I am sure you come across proponents of IP Security systems that believe there is nothing better. From my experience these individuals come from an IT background and not a SECURITY background. In my opinion in dealing with a large number of IT professionals is they have a narcissistic personality and they think THEIR way is the best way. I also have found, and even had this admitted, that IT personnel are tired of recovering lost passwords, removing viruses and diagnosing technical issues is mundane and taking on a new project that involves "Something cool" is a breath of fresh air to them. I can't fault them as I am certified in several IT disciplines and I know what they are talking about. But, I have been in security first and foremost and I see poor design and placement, trying to do something the right way but on the cheap, struggling to manage the system and bandwidth issues just to name a few. The other problem is management deems the security system as technology and therefore if you plug it in and it requires electricity, the IT department most know best. To most people, physical security is something that is easy as common sense. 80% Yes but it is in the 20% that lies the details that could compromise security. What I have witnessed is ego getting in the way of correcting an issue and admitting your way is not always the best way. One variable most noted, for years the security industry was pushing for real-time 24-30fps across all channels, for a reason. The best analogy is a photographer that just snaps away taking hundreds of photos. They then go back to the studio and sort through the best ones. That celebrities best moment or an athletes most exciting frame. Ask your self, do you want 30 chances or 7 chances to capture the perfect image? IP proponents will dismiss frame rate just so they can stick with IP because "It is IP and IP is the best technology and I have control over IP." Then there are those that will say their IP camera does 30fps (Half truth). Of course there is and my Porsche can do 132MPH...........when I am the only car on the road. We lost an 88 camera installation for a facility that security had a high importance. The IT guy convinced management that IP was the best and "There can be only one!" The system turned out was more expensive in more ways than one. Due to the 3MP cameras they had to scale frame rate down to 6fps in order to stream and also maintain 30 days of storage. The cost of the equipment and infrastructure was over 27% more than our recommendation of HD-SDI. They have an estimated 4-6 incidents per month with 2 court cases in a years time that were thrown out for lack of evidence. There was not enough frames to accurately depict the incident. Sounds familiar? How about the nanny arrested for shaking a baby but later turned out the frame rate made it appear that way? Ever make a flip book? Your final result will vary based upon the number of pages you put into it. This facility then required the IT department to spend a great deal of time on the surveillance system itself. Translate man hours into money and the system cost continues. Roughly a year later they called back wanting a quote on another adjacent facility and we told them we are not interested in being just another quote for quoting purposes. They said no they really want us to do this one. The difference is notable. 4 monitors on the security departments desk. 3 with the IP system displaying 6fps and the other monitor with HD-SDI at 30fps. For those IP only mindsets, the proof is apparent. Take away any knowledge of technology and anybody can clearly see which one is better. If you can only fathom the variables that can cause things to go wrong with IP systems in comparison to direct connect systems, you would have to ask yourself if it is worth it. I think if I listed them all it would be a book. Look at the posts in this forum and notice the number of helps request for IP. Google IP camera hacks. The guy that had his camera hacked and while viewing, the audio was replaced with "Every breath you take." For those IT professionals that say I have a secure network and nobody can hack us, your a fool. You just haven't been hacked YET. Maybe you will be lucky but in security luck is not a comforting thought. Now that being said, IP does have a place but you need to be sure you know what it is. My challenge to you: Submit posts on why you think IP is better for your organization, State the equipment used and the configuration and the time spent to install and maintain. -

Are there affordable HD pinhole/tiny cameras that work well?
varascope replied to mxmaniac's topic in Security Cameras
Do you mean storage? Standalone can usually hold 16TB or more on average. At least the good ones. Unless you want more than 16 cameras and/or analytics it seems like overkill. Did you post before? This seems like the same questions and same post over and over. Hmmmmm....Groundhog day. -
Have you found a video card that can display 4k for a PC? Until you do along with a HDMI 2.0 cable, it will be the only way. NVIDIA has cards that support 4k but only through display port which the 39" Seiki does not have. By the time the technology catches up your tv will be obsolete.

I'm overwhelmed with all of the choices
varascope replied to tekkendork's topic in General Digital Discussion
Same brand is recommended to avoid any possible issue. NVR's come with compatibility lists and if ONVIF compliant should not be an issue, however Murphy finds opportunities. Sometimes compatibility says the brand will work but a firmware version may not. It is best to buy from one dealer, that speaks fluid English, and can help you with support if needed. A few will help with configuring before leaving their door so install is straight forward. PM if you need a list. -

Individual components are always better as each camera has a SPECIFIC function and needs. Some need IR and some don,t. WDR is another perfect example. I would caution against wireless as they are on public bands and must be susceptible to interference per FCC ruling. Power isn't wireless so why not run both. If you can get a CAT5/6 to a power plug, they make ethernet over powerline adapters. You can power your cameras and send IP over your home electrical wiring. You should be able to do 2 cameras with this setup for $800 or less if you do the install. 3 Cameras would put you closer to $1000. 2 Outdoor 1.3 MP 1 Indoor 1.3 4ch NVR Powerline adapters -
If your having a salesman sell the contract for you, it is up to you to determine and build it in. 1. % high enough to motivate sales person to do the work. 2. Does the salesman do the calculations or do you. If you do then they get less because of less effort. 3. Build into the contract so everyone benefits. Working out sales contracts with your staff can be tricky. 1. Upfront or monthly payout. I prefer monthly as it keeps the salesperson motivated to stay and balances their pay when slow. They have to understand that if they quit they lose their monthly. 2. If you do a 1 time payout make it smaller than if they take it monthly. Good sales people should want to build their book of business and once they have a steady monthly base it will get to a point they would be starting all over if they quit. The hinge to this is you are paying them commission to manage the service contract during that period. Quitting or being terminated prevents them from managing the contract, therefore not entitled to commissions. ALSO if the customer stops paying the monthly, the salesperson should go out to find if there is an issue. I never like the hit and run salespeople. They make the sale and then pass the responsibility on. If they make promises then they should show they stick by it. Nothing worse than a salesperson saying the installers can perform the miracle without charging extra. But, you need to develop a plan that prevents laziness. If their monthly is high, they may not want to sell. Enabling quotas and penalties for non-performance monthly or quarterly. You obviously want to develop your service contracts as this goes toward your companies net evaluation. No contracts and you company is only worth your last sale and average monthly service calls. Eventually if you decide to sell. You contracts will be the bulk of your asking. PM me if you need further help

For a one time install, that will work. You might need a BNC adapter for the cable and a Y splitter to share the 12VDC temporarily. At that price what can go wrong.............da da da! -
Don't buy from Chinavasion. I hear so many people getting burned. If the name doesn't turn you off to begin with. Consider this: A PTZ is: 1. Outdoors 2. 24/7/365 operation 3. Motorized 4. Tours and constant moving parts Do you think for $450 you can get something that will last? Most smaller PTZ manufacturers only do 6 month warranties because of PTZs on tour. After centuries of selling, people still don't get if it is too good to be true, then it probably is not. You do pay more in the long run. If you spend hours configuring and/or repairing, your time is worth something so where is the value. I would buy a used Pelco Spectra off Ebay before buying this one!
