Running cable underground?
Lolo Wolf replied to Snow_death's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
After 37 years of underground work (since retired, highway/heavy/bridge/tunnel) countless foot of of concrete encased ductbank, HV runs for rail sub-stations... etc, have yet to find a "dry pipe", conduit is all about mechanical/physical protection, no matter what, if you use conduit or not always use wire approved for wet location outdoors....my two cents -
siamese bundled together
Lolo Wolf replied to ALIAS8579's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
Try to avoid the taping of cable in a bundle, reason being if you ever have to pull a suspect failed line you will have to remove all of it to cut the bad run from the bundle within the wall, if you can, lay out your 10ft section, tape a small section at the end, hook to your fish take out the bends and then carefully pull and oversize your hole leave room to fill so you can easily service that section if you have to repull a bad line. More work but save you time later in the event of having to replace a single run within the finished wall Also may want to consider running a spare. Whenever work within finished walls always try to imagine having to revisit the run for repair or retrofit later. -
OK, sounds like a very interesting DIY project and you have been tweaking it for sometime....hope you never have a crash but just a side note if you do and take it to court hope the otherside doesnt have some tricky lawyer that trys to make it look like you had too much distraction going on with all the cams and gear operating......like they do when a person is operating a cell phone....although Im sure you would prove that there is no driver interaction needed for the operation....but some liars....opps I mean lawyers can be pretty slick

If the car is stolen for joy ride you may recover your DVR but if its ripped for parts forget it most jackers can have a car dismantled in aproxx eight minutes in a chop shop. What really works is a remote kill switch along with the tracking then you give the bad guy(s) a real problem. The more you can slow down a car thief the better the chance of defeating the crime, a pro thief thinks in terms of time and they are good at what they do...joy riders on the other hand are often pretty stupid or just kids on a high.

You might want to fab your own using a Peltier Junction Thermo Electric Heat Pump http://www.electronickits.com/kit/complete/peltier/ck500.htm. http://www.electronickits.com/kit/complete/peltier/Peltier_example.jpg after seeing your posts you seem to enjoy your projects. Ive made up some cooler/heater set ups using these to make a atv coffee cup warmer and tractor battery warmer just note that even when using a reversing switch for hot/cold you must let the unit either cool down or heat up before switching you can use the unit for summer and winter months (heat and cool depending on the season)

Did a simple RF control set up for a client that wanted to control Mini PTZ located at his drive gate, the parts were as follows: 1 CNB wireless remote controller IRC100 (hand held remote), RS-485 Control reciever spliced into RS484 on main controller located in basement pointed at with RadioShack wireless remote control extender (Model 15-1950) IR RF unit placed in bedroom upstairs (app 80ft no los) with additional RadioShack recv located in kitchen. PTZ modulated with other cams thru house on all TVs. PTZ is used for monitor only, His DVR is hardwired with static cams (Extreme EX14s and UF100s) The Mini PTZ has IRcut and the IRs for the static cams is picked very nice by the Mini as a added plus. Just a simple solution for RF control without all the bells and whistles if you want to go that route.

The PTZ in the first pic posted looks like a Acutvista product. The three hole top assembly and removable wire feed plate on the arm are the same as all the ones Ive used from them. (http://www.acutvista.com.tw/outdoorPTZ.htm)

Did law enforcement advise you to change it? criminal records are filled with felonies based on payback (assults/murder) on what "outlaw" and street gangs consider to be a violation or disrespect of their colors and will pursue persons who do so, LK (Latin Kings) are active in most major cities aside from NYC within and outside the US. They originally were from the Northside of Chicago also known as the ALKN (the almighty latin kings nation) and within the penal system. You can be stand up and continue to use the logo, watch your back and if they confront or contact you, tell them to go to Burger King or move to Montana where a law abiding citizen can still carry a sidearm. In all serious retrospect the LKs are a gang with a long history of extreme violent criminal behavior. Perhaps a logo change on your part would be a good move, kings and royalty dont belong in America anyway.

Question and Caution On MG Electronics Power Supply
Lolo Wolf replied to Gyro Gearloose's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
"None of their products are really suitable for CCTV" Not true many of there ps have terminal connects as well multi configs highly suitable for standard/custom cctv work, (the inrush current limiting and emi filtering specs are no hype) high quality.... Ive used both their PCB mountable products as well the chassis mounted products for custom enclosure work and entry work and lately have found some of the Altronix prods purchased within the past year showing several quality flaws such as misaligned door hinges and subpar coatings on their outdoor nema gear. Furthermore the company answers the phone to any custom consideration and today that is a plus to me. Their website has a security app sec, I only mention sources that Ive had positive results with. -
Question and Caution On MG Electronics Power Supply
Lolo Wolf replied to Gyro Gearloose's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
Gyro, there is still some high quality American gear being made... I try to buy American when I can (american labor needs to put food on their table too, our goverment seems to have forgotten that...unfair, oneway trade agreements...etc)....here is a good source for quality PS http://www.bearpwr.com/ -
how much for installation
Lolo Wolf replied to texasdyme's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
Percy states:", you don't stay in your job long losing money on million dollar projects." Often true in the private sector but In the Military and Congress the more money you lose and waste the more promotions you get. -
Happy to report after 15hr power outage and numerous power on/off starts due to heavy blowing snow (Main line overheads and transformer destruction to underground feeders caused major outages prior to Thanksgiving) and near zero temps the TBT mini PTZs in service have recovered and are stable. The only con: terminal block hookup for wire harness, the connector body is fragile and a prewire would be better aside from that the PTZ is well machined and the overall quality of the gaskets and fit are excellent, the threads were clean and I found the mounting arm design durable and install friendly for high pole mounting. For anybody considering a Mini Ptz with IRcut I recommend these units, however the 24vac product performed better than the 12v model integrated into a 24vac system with a power conversion module.... the 12V on a isolated PS was fine.

Question and Caution On MG Electronics Power Supply
Lolo Wolf replied to Gyro Gearloose's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
In your original post you stated:"We connected this camera to a different brand of power supply & it started to work" When you swapped the PS was it local: single isolated transformer, near the cam or on the original power wire run? Aside from the current draw and related issues discussed perhaps you should check your power runs (lengths/voltage drop) -
To insure a quality signal for your cctv installs use RG59 95%copper and avoid the typical cable company compression F connects (although Im sure you have access to plenty of them) use BNC and follow the standard cable guidelines for your runs/pulls entry, terminations etc... by doing so will you will be less prone to problems and rework.

Best Practice for Running Cable from building to pole
Lolo Wolf replied to dthompson's topic in Video Transmission/Control Devices
dtthompson stated that it was a wooden Pole, so his run would be surface mounted. His "wooden post" more than likely timber/log and hopefully pressure-treated....(older wooden utility type poles in the US were almost always treated with creosote, nasty stuff) ... other materials steel, concrete, and composites (fibreglass) are being used these days for utility.... Its not at all uncommon for telecommunication network/signal equipment to be situated on poles ...analogue repeaters and other outside plant equipment have been mounted against poles for years, and now digital equipment multiplexing/demultiplexing ,digital repeaters etc... electric POCOs often lease lines to cable television, telephone, street lighting, traffic signals etc... private services share poles, either in joint ownership or by renting space to each other. A private pole such as his still must adhere to safe electrical pratices however. I would assume and hope that the fixture already mounted is placed with a outdoor box and proper wire in conduit. There should always be a safe gap and isolation between power HV lines and LV signal wires, and he should pay close attention to correct aerial rigging standards. -
Best Practice for Running Cable from building to pole
Lolo Wolf replied to dthompson's topic in Video Transmission/Control Devices
Before you start "stringin" wire/cable do a read on messengered drop cables, whatever cable you run...cctv, tv etc, there are several guidlines and safety factors. You must also take into consideration environmental conditions as well..in colder climates rain turns to ice and ice turns to added load etc. also is the pole mechanicaly sound, is it privately owned, proper rigging.. a failure can cause serious injury as well property damage if a cable fails and gets picked up by wind, here is a good read for you on the basics: http://www.timesfiber.com/pdfs/Technical%20Notes/1039a-tn.pdf -
multiple HD Direct TV connections
Lolo Wolf replied to VST_Man's topic in General Digital Discussion
VST, just started to expand into HT work on a custom basis, have moded a lot of cctv systems for customers... mostly for gated entrys inhouse all TV monitoring and due to the upgrades to digital cable systems have spent a lot of time researching new tech to stay on top of it, found that Gefen http://www.gefen.com/index.jsp carry a excellent line of products you may want to look at... in so far as that mickey mouse install that you will correct Im sure once you clean it all up you will be offered more work from other owners....my drinkin days are over but man Ive seen a lot of real bad setups done by "professionals" in bars/clubs hell spent a week in a cancer center last year, my oncologist got me a great private room with a panasonic Plasma tv with a picture so bad I crawled outa bed to find that the tv feed was a slip on F connector -

smack it with a punch, for the altronix which doesnt provide them I just pull out the old Kwik stepper and put them where I want them anyway
-
Rory, all the altronix outdoor nema boxes I use also have binding nuts for ground, the 2prong AC cord is fine as long as it is approved for the device and you keep the conects apart from the LV side of the transformer,if you choose to bond the box that is your choice, the last one I did called for separate entrances for the PTC outputs from the non-power limited, pulled the ac in on the other side keeping all AC in and LV out isolated three individual conduits, I use mostly Altronix and they have stood up well, used some 24vac Preferred Power Products for indoor work and their boxes are well thought out with provided knockouts and separation panel, glad to see you made it through that last big storm....
-
Collin, you are correct on the hardwire, the HV should never be within contact distance to any LV and entrance should be isolated thru conduit with a provided knockout for entry-safe practice (HV wire could energize a LV wire due to a connector failure) aside from boxes Ive seen that and other mess before on sites ,lots of people doin improper HV lV wire mix within same conduit fills then they wonder why they get written on a inspection
