Remote access to AVTech AVC781 behind a firewall
bike_rider replied to rem's topic in Digital Video Recorders
Ah. got it. When you try to login from behind a firewall, can you get to the logs on the firewall to see what the fw thinks is happening? -
Thanks for the recommendation.

So, any dealer on here want to sell me a camera? Not having a lot of luck sourcing the GE cameras. PM me. Thanks.
-
It might be best to simply get to two DVRs and run the NTSC to one and PAL to another.

Remote access to AVTech AVC781 behind a firewall
bike_rider replied to rem's topic in Digital Video Recorders
Since java is reseting the port, it makes sense that netstat would not report an open port. Zonealarm is a good idea. If you really want to see what is happening, Ethereal will tell you, but it is not for the non-technical user. -
I've been reading the posts on LPR systems based on non-LP cameras. A couple of the more successful setups make a reference to things like " Lens has a 52nn screw-in 850nm IR cut filter. " Can somebody explain this to me? I'm familiar with the IR filters that are automatically moved in true D/N camera, but that doesn't seem to be what these comments are about. Thanks Update, I think the correct term is IR pass filter. Is this right?
-
If I go down this path, I think an IR pass filter is what I'd be looking for.

Hi Rory, Thanks as always. If I can do the vandal domes in the budget, that's a bonus. I'm not sure what you mean by "Also those little black inserts, same stuff, if you have a near wide angle lens then you really want to dump it, also it can scratch the dome cover when adjusting."

Thanks,

Arecont 3130 to NAS?
bike_rider replied to bike_rider's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Thanks, this is very helpful. The budget says my project is on hold for now. -
Thanks. I'm just looking at all my options. I may just end up using my 100' tape measure and one of the many on line field-of-view calcs.

I was kicking around the web a few days ago and I saw a device that helps you to know what lens length you need. You look through the device, zoom as far as you need and then read the scale on the outside. It would tell you what length lens you need, adjusted for sensor size. Does anyone know who makes this and where I can find it? Thanks.

Thanks guys. That's the one. I'm the neighborhood camera "expert". My neighborhood is taking a very proactive approach to fighting a growing crime problem. A couple of us already have systems and several more will probably add systems in the next few months. Nobody is likely to pay somebody to install a system for them, so this may help them avoid bad lens decisions.

Sorry man, I don't have any suggestions in that price range. The only WDR rated camera I have is the Pany CP 484. Very nice, but about $425, without lens.
-
WDR just means Wide Dynamic Rage. It does not refer to a specific chip set.

Arecont 3130 to NAS?
bike_rider replied to bike_rider's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Thanks. I'm an IT geek, so I have the network part covered. My real question was the ability of the Areconts to write to a NAS via HTTP or ftp. Sounds like that will work. My other camera option looks like IDEyes. -
I know that this is not on the list of supported cameras, but has anyone connected one of these to a Geovision system? Any advice before I go down this path would be great.

Ah, one of those really fun topics First, go back to the pub, have a pint and try again. Make sure it still works. This sort of thing is easy to break if you start tinkering, so double check that it is good. I'm going to ask some very basic questions, just to make sure we don't miss something obvious. When you are connecting from the pub, you are going from the pub's network, across the internet, through whatever firewall the office has and then to the DVR (or video PC). Right? If so, that tells us that you really did setup the office correctly (yeah!). So, you used a laptop at the pub, right? Is that the same computer you used to try to connect from home? If not, give it a try. I've never heard of an ISP blocking outbound ports, so I'd be surprised if that was the problem. But having said that, what port numbers are you using? Can you change them?

I don't have any idea how to post the video without using my personal site, so you'll have to take my word for this. The very first camera I put up covered the side of the house behind the garage, where the utility panels are. I figured that if I was going to hit a house I would cut the power and wait for the battery backups to die. We came home on Saturday from a day out and I was reviewing the logs when I noticed that somebody had tripped the motion sensor in the driveway. I hit the quad view and saw this: They pull up and park on the street. A guy jumps out and goes to the front door. He then goes back to the car and they pull down the street a few more feet so they are at the back side of the garage. (Now showing on the back side camera). One guy runs up to the utility panel (great shot of his face), and snaps off the lock on the panel. Unfortunately for him, he jams the panel, so he calls out to the second guy to bring him some pliers. The second guy runs up with the pliers (nice shot of his face). They are starting to get nervous and the second guy starts looking around. You can almost read his lips when he says, "Man they have a video camera." They start to saunter off and the first guy looks over his shoulder at the camera. (Another nice shot). They leave. We roll up 4 minutes later. Weird. The cops were very happy with the video CD and the stills I printed. I've changed the system so that I get an email on my phone when the motion sensors trip. I screwed the utility panel closed. I ordered a couple of big signs "24 Hour Video Surveillance". I'm adding a camera at the front door. I'm thinking about putting the low voltage yard lights on a UPS. I never really thought I'd catch anyone at the utility panel, but there it is. Video system is already on a UPS (as are the cable modem and router) and the alarm system has a battery back up too. I get an email on my phone if the video system loses power. Don't know if the cops will catch them, but the camera sure did scare them away.

Arecont 3130 to NAS?
bike_rider replied to bike_rider's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Thanks. I'll have a separate network for this data stream. I'm probably looking at 2 cameras, so I think I'll be OK. -
Ah. I had the wrong port for playback (5066?). Thanks I did also fix the other problem with the VPN. For anyone who finds this in the archives - if you use a cellular network and then VPN from that, you need your private IP addresses in the "exceptions" section of the communications.

With my shiny new AT&T 8525, I am having a great time using Gview2 to watch my cameras. It works amazingly well, even at non-3G speeds. I have two problems that I'm hoping somebody can help with: I can VPN into Geovision server (PPTP through the router), but when I try to run GV2 or IE to connect to any machine on my internal network, the VPN connection drops. I can ping machines on the internal network, but not use applications. I'm sure this isn't a GV specific thing, but a windows setting. GV2 works fine if I use my WiFi network or if I use port forwarding through the router. Also, I can't get RPB to work from the phone. RPB server is running on my server and for trouble shooting I'm using my Wifi connection and have turned off windows firewall on the GV server. No dice. When I try to connect (with the same login name and password that I use for GV2 live view), I immediately get a message on the PDA ""Disconnected". On the PDA, Port is 5066, MDB type is "DVR". Anyone have any ideas?
-
If you mask the whole thing, then I don't think there should be anyway to trip motion detection. Weird. I thought mask was efffectively level zero.

On no, let's be perfectly clear on this - the documentation sucks. Feel free to ask any questions.

You can setup notifications for "system events" in the system configuration. On the right side of the dialog window is the section labeled "Monitor Option". Press the green arrow looking button labeled "Send event alerts". Check the boxes for whatever option you want. OK out of that and check the box on the configuration dialog box.
