Hi all, I'm in the process of building a house and I would like to have security camera installed (by myself). The requirement is relatively simple: 2 or 4 outdoor cameras. The requirements are simple: remote viewing and some form of storage (onsite or offsite). Priority is simplicity and not too expensive I'm thinking of IP-camera using PoE. The plan is to ask the builder to run CAT5/6 cables from where the cameras are going to be installed to a central point (utlity cupboard). The rest will just be installing the camera and setting up the PVR. Am I missing something? Any recommendation for components to go with it? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks!

Recommendation on security camera for new build

Thanks. It's a good idea. I didn't know about lighting. Will investigate -
Hi, I bought a Xvision XHR208 on ebay to replace my Q-see DVR which packed up after 5 years. Installed it and works great. Even managed to get remote viewing working from my phone. However, the XHR208 remote viewing seems to stop working after a period of time (maybe 12hrs-24hrs). All the other functions seem to be OK though. I need to power cycle it for it to work again. After a bit of research, this seems to be a common problem in Chinese DVRs. Does anyone know where I can find the latest firmware of the machine? Any help or suggestion is much appreciated.

Hello everyone. I'm new here and greetings! I'm looking to upgrade my existing 10 years old CCTV system (analogue camera with DVR). It crashes quite often and is looking a bit long on the tooth. Given that there was an attempted burglary to our house and the next door neighbour got burgled and both cars stolen, this is becoming a bit urgent. The system I have was professionally installed and has coax cables and power cables running to dome cameras. I'm thinking of getting HD SDI cameras and recorders - either DIY install or done professionally. I'm totally confused as to where to start. Should I just spend the money and get a pro to do it (any recommendations?) or go the cheap route and buy the cameras and recorder to fit them myself. If the latter route, which camera and recorder should I get? Any pointers/recommendations will be much welcome! I'm based in London BTW. Cheers!

Hi, Thanks for the great replies guys! Looking at HD SDI as the coax cables are already in place and it'll be prohibitive to rewire with CAT5 for IP based system. Budget up to 1.5k for DIY. Can you recommend which camera/DVR and where to get them? Never heard of TVI.... will look into it. Any experience with HD SDI to share here will be much appreciated!
